      @@Moore2Lifepantrylovinprepper its not a lie. I look forward to watching every video. I need help with my 16 qt Presto without a gauge. I'm not scared of the canner itself, just my stove. Its a new coil electric stove, so the coils/burners have regulators and they scare the crap out of me. I'm looking at replacing with either older coils (type without the regulators). I've called Frigidaire they said my stove was safe to can with as is, but the temp fluctuations scare me. I'm trying to convince my husband I need the 23 qt too. BTW I hate my electric stove, but gas is not available in my area.

    I have both the All American canner, and Presto.
    I switched to using only the Presto, because of age of my hands. The Presto is lighter.
    A thing I do differently is I take the gauge off before I wash the lid. That way no water can get inside it.
    You can also buy another rack so you can to two layers of pints.

    Love, love, love my 2 Presto canners, 23 & 16. I’m 65 in a few weeks, know I can’t handle the AA’s with my hands. But, my goodness, cannot imagine life without a pressure canner. I love canning. I don’t do it every week, maybe more, maybe less, depending on the time of year. I pressure can my tomatoes, now, as so many new hybrids aren’t guaranteed to be high acid. I love canning. I love TH-cam for the sharing of SAFE data. Blessings to all my sisters. 🥰

    Excellent video. I'm not a new canner but certainly don't know everything, therefore I will sit through videos like this to keep my knowledge fresh and up to date. I started with an All-American 915 and really love it. But, I'm ready to move from small batch canning to some serious productivity and based on all the videos I've watched, Presto would be my canner of choice. It's a little lighter weight than the AA and that matters to me. Your presentation was thorough and interesting and I'm grateful to Heather for sharing her channel with you. A+ all around.

    The dog cracked me up. Never fails when you are trying to do something like talk on the phone or making a video, they either bark, wrestle each other, or squeeze the toy. Very informative Presto video. I wanted an all american but now I think I'll start with a Presto. I had a small one years ago but loaned it out & never saw it again. Thank you. While this video played, I went to Amazon and bought my first big canner. A Presto 23 qt. I may get an All American someday but this one fit my budget better.

    Thank you for being explicit about the weights and regulator. It totally cleared up my questions about it in my mind. There is a very popular Utube canner who shall remain nameless that is telling people they can use the gauge and the jiggler weight in conjunction with each other. If you read the manuals and the USDA book that does not make sense. At least it didn't to me. I've had my Presto for a year now and am just now finding the exact sweet spot on my burner. And it's different for different burners. Before my Presto I used a Mirro exclusively and still love it because it is shorter and wider. Just can't find the correct gasket as it is a pre 1983 canner and everyone is out of them at the moment. When they come back in stock I'm getting 3 of them to have on hand. Thank you for joining Heather's canning sessions and simplifying everything.( And thank you for your advise when I 1st got my Presto. I asked Heather and she found out thru you!)

    • @TheKneadyHomesteader
      @TheKneadyHomesteader  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am so happy Mandy was able to give you some clarity on the weights and regulator. Sometimes a youtuber doesn't mean to give bad info, and sometimes they KNOW they are giving bad info and they just don't care, because thats how they like to do it. It's always best to use content creators as inspiration vs teachers.....but Mandy knows her Presto like the back of her hand and she is in contact with Presto for clarification any time she wants to double check anything. I trust her so much!

    • @Jomama02
      @Jomama02 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TheKneadyHomesteader I always double check my USDA book with any Creator. Even you and I trust you explicitly but everyone can misspeak on accident so I just have to be sure on everything or I don't do it! Could say I'm a little OCD about things when I can and I don't feel that's a bad thing when it comes to safety!

    • @Moore2Lifepantrylovinprepper

      I think I know the person. If they would just call presto they would understand you Can use the weight on the canner, but your dial in null and void at the point. you just listen to the jiggler

    • @JayP-kd5rc
      @JayP-kd5rc 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a Presto with the dial also, but do use the jiggler, and it works perfectly. I am supposed to can at 10 psi in my area, so the jiggler keeps it at 10. I then go by the jiggler, rather then the dial, but they always do coincide with one another. So it can be done. I mean, if you are supposed to can at say 12 or 13 psi, then you would have to use the 15 lb. It's much easier than keeping the dial at just the right spot. My stoves sweet spot isn't always in the same place.

    • @JayP-kd5rc
      @JayP-kd5rc 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Moore2Lifepantrylovinprepper Exactly! But it does work. Much easier than keeping the dial on the right spot.

    Thank you for the wealth of information on the Presto canner. I only have a 16 so I don't have a gauge. This video helped a lot even though I read the book because I am a visual learner. I appreciate Channels correcting misinformation. I have followed Canning by the Book during this off season so I learned some safety tips and the horrors of botulism. I never knew botulism did not present a smell or bad taste to food. I'm thankful to have found two new channels I can follow without fear of doing something harmful. God Bless.

    Great video, Mandy! Thanks, Mandy & Heather! That squeaky toy at the beginning was funny ~ I thought Mandy had a parrot or some other bird, for a minute there. My current Presto is a 16-quart, which does NOT have a dial, just the 3-piece pressure regulator. It was what I could get off-the-shelf at Walmart. After doing all the cleaning as per the manual (patting self on back, haha), I only used it once, a couple of years ago. This video series is really helping me get back on track with my dreams. 💕
    It was very reassuring to hear that Presto has such excellent customer service. That means a lot.
    Feeling inspired by this Revolution, I did bite the bullet and order the 23-quart online (on sale, yay!), which will arrive in a few weeks (hopefully sooner). So it was also fantastic to learn that all of the parts will most likely be interchangeable between the two canners. At my elevation, I have to add 15 minutes to pretty much everything I do, plus it takes longer for the water to boil in the first place. So I wanted the ability to stack my jars. Yes, it may make a session longer, but it's already a long haul for me, lol. Thanks again! And I've also subbed Mandy's channel, for more inspiration. Big hugs and much love to you both!!! 💖 🤗

      Lucy, it's O.K. to use the new Presto 3-piece weight with some Presto models: www.gopresto.com/product/pressure-canner-regulator-kit-85485 If you do, then you need to rely primarily on the weight (instead of the dial gauge) to determine when your canner has come up to pressure so you can start counting the processing time :-)

    • @Moore2Lifepantrylovinprepper
      @Moore2Lifepantrylovinprepper 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Lucy there's a lot of mis-information out there. You can use your weighted gauge you just cannot still use the dial gauge as reference as per instructions from presto. I have the weighted gauge in case my dials break and there is no replacement. So if you use it, just ignore the dial and you're good to go

    Hi Mandy. I'm new to Heathers channel. Thank you for being a good friend to her at this very traumatic time in her life. I'm fairly new to prepping, but did do canning a little over 50 years ago. I'm 71. My presto is sooo old, the model number is almost rubbed out, its on the bottom. LOL I did call presto, got new seals, weight and a lecture how out dated my presto is, and that they would sell me a new one. LOL. I explained, that at this time, I could not. My presto canner can only do 3 pints at a time safely. I do have the original book to pressure canner. And everything with it is doing great. My only issue is the amount of time to pressure can vegetables. So, I will look up the proper amount on the internet. 😃 Thank You for this tutorial today for new canners. Bless you.

    Thanks, Mandy. My canner is an old Presto with a gauge and I am thinking she put the kind of regulator in there that you said to use instead of the gauge. I will definitely check that out before I use it. It's an old harvest gold 70's model but it looks brand new. I found it cheap on FB Marketplace right before lockdown started. I need to order the user's manual thanks for that reminder, too.

      Cathy I had one of those old harvest gold canners, loved that thing. If you have a dial gauge and the regulator is not there but a rocker with two rings, that is a weighted gauge. You can get a regulator on amazon

    Also with the gasket once its dried well, I found I could not get the lid on and even my husband could not get the lid to go on and turn, we put olive oil on it and it went right on. I would put that on it after each use. My gasket was never hard getting in, it was loose.

    my mom was a fairly prolific canner for years. At one time she had three whole pressure cookers. She would have a spare gasket for each, and order a replacement as she used the spare. If the gasket had to actually manage to survive for two whole years, she would change it out on General principle. My dad did appliance repair, and got a whole 15% discount from the companies that sold the canners. If he actually had a storefront they probably would have sold him counters, gaskets, Etc, at wholesale. For about 18 months my mother taught a younger woman all of the ins and outs of canning. She, and her husband went on to actually teach and supply canning equipment in Washington state and the adjoining States. This was in the 70s. My dad referred to Mom's Apprentice as that hippy dip chick. Who learned nothing from her grandmother. My grandparents, and great-grandparents all did canning. one year it was a very shocking experience to see my dad doing all the canning. As mom had been laid up with a broken leg.

    i have a presto canner but it does not have a gauge how do I know when to put on the weight and when to take it off?

    • @TheKneadyHomesteader
      @TheKneadyHomesteader  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      when you get a steady stream of steam coming from your vent pipe....you will set your timer for 10 minutes. this is called venting your canner. after 10 minutes, you will place your weight on. once that weight starts to gently rock, constantly, you will start your timing for your canning process.....whatever that time is for whatever product you are canning. keep that weight gently rocking....not too hard, but you definitely want it to rock. after your time is up, turn your canner off.....and keep that weight on until your canner comes off of pressure. you will be able to tell when that happens when your canner lock falls down.

    Question.. On the Presto Canner . Does the weight Jiggels . What I'm trying to say is ,you have to go by the gauge don't you.

    • @Moore2Lifepantrylovinprepper
      @Moore2Lifepantrylovinprepper 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Karen if you have a dial gauge then you have a regulator. That regulator may start to rock once in a while when you get close to 15 psi if that's where you need to be. If your psi is lower it may swing a bit to help regulate and that's it. If you have no dial then you're using a weighted gauge base on the weights you have placed on it it will gently but consistently rock throughout the entire process. I believe presto has a youtube channel the shows that rocking process
