    I have had my 23 qt. pressure canner for over 50 years and have only had to replace the gasket 3 times and I can several times a week. This is the only canner that I will use it is a work horse.

    When I was canning last year after not canning for a while, a friend was here and after I took it apart to clean it, he put the release valve in upside down. My point is that I called the company and they were so nice and walked me through the whole process of putting everything back together correctly and then it worked great! I can't emphasize how nice the woman was.

    Thank you so much for these videos. I've been watching you for a few months, maybe almost a year. A guy from church just sold me his mom's old yellow/gold canner. I went to the website and looked up/downloaded/printed out the manual. He showed me how to use it by canning some meat together, but this makes me feel so much better! I've been wanting a pressure canner for some time (since 2020) and I'm excited to start!!! Going back to your old canning 101 videos has been a great help!

    Maybe a tip for people... write down your canner info from the base in the manual (circle the model number if the manual is more generic) or in your ball book, on a paper you store in your canner... then you have it. No straining your eyes to see a faded or scorched stamp.

    If you have trouble reading the numbers on the bottom of the canner, try taking a picture with your phone and save it. Then you can make the print larger making it easier to read. Just a thought.

    I have a 30 year old presto 22 quart canner that was given to me by a neighbor when I bought some jars from her sale and she learned I canned for my family. She said her kids didn't can and she was so thrilled it would be getting used. Such a sweet memory everytime I get it out.

    Leisa, Excellent again! I have a severely damage right arm with almost no strength in it. A tip that took me some time to figure out is: Get a good smallish cutting board (mine is bamboo) and put the canner on it - then I can push it down to the sink to fill or empty it (after the jars have been removed). Of course, you would have to have your range and sink on the same counter to do this. It has made it possible for me to can again.

    I am a huge fan of using the Presto. For some reason I could just never get into the All American. I always have a back up gasket in my pantry just in case. However in all my years of canning I've only ever seen one gasket fail during canning. It was during a pressure canning workshop and a gasket failed because it split. It was actually a good thing because the workshop participants got to see how to handle it. This is a great video!

    Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you! After watching many of your canning videos I finally pressure canned for the first time! We took the big plunge and did ground beef, because your videos made us feel confident that we could! 7 jars and 6 sealed, we have chili planned for dinner tomorrow, so that one not sealing is no problem! I didn't get that ring on tight enough, it had come loose during the process. So I knew as soon as I took it out that it wouldn't seal. We have chicken thawing to do some ugly chicken next. Exciting times in our house. Just a little fyi, youtube had recommended a video from Darcy at Purposeful Pantry and watching her videos led me to you. Sometimes youtube suggestions work out great! I just picked a random video to make my comment on, just one that I've watched in the last week to prepare.

    Good coverage. I just listened to Pinball Prepper yesterday talking about shortages on car parts coming from China and he mentioned it might now be a bad idea to order your parts like gaskets while you can. Good point show stopper if you need a part and can't get it.. I ordered a new gasket today along with a dial gauge over the phone super nice folks it'll be here in the next week. I do not know if our county extenstion office is open or how long it would take for me to go in if I can at all with Covid to have my gauge tested my canner is 2 years old now so I just went ahead and ordered a new one. Presto of course. It was very affordable yep gasket was $12 gauge was $18 I think? Anna In Ohio

    • @marthaadams8326

      I have been trying to store spare parts for everything - suppose you need oil to do an oil change? if things get worse, where will you get it? Prepsteaders has a very good recent video on the most dangerous prepper - could be YOU! Check your things now before it is too late to get what you need. There is a great disruption of supply lines for everything. And, in the last couple of years, I only buy made in the U.S. appliances, except for a couple of small ones.

      I just saw Leisa's video using the weighted gauge on a dial gauge Presto canner - ordered 2 weighted gauges in case the extension office is closed with another lockdown in future. Since I don't have to get the weighted gauge checked it seems a safe alternative to the dial. It's crazy how I'm having to double think of "what if" scenarios with things not being available.

    • @buckeyedav1
      @buckeyedav1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@plantlady1227 Yes it is. I have a different pressure canner that uses the weight gauge but it doesn't work on Presto. So I did have a back up plan I just like the dial gauge better. I'm always looking for back ups to my back ups lol. Anna In Ohio

    I inherited a 175004 17 quart. The book shows that my pressure gauge has two gaskets(rings) and a screw. When I look on the presto website it shows that the pressure gauge for this model should have a rubber adapter. But my gauge looks exactly like the one on this canner in your video. It has the numbers 035-04 in the bottom of the dial. The parts bag that was in the canner had just the pressure gauge with a nut on it. The manual for your canner and mine are the same. Does the gauge on this canner have gaskets? I noticed in the video that all I could see was a nut on the inside of the lid.

      I got the same answer when I called Presto to ask about ordering an extra gasket. I think I will order another gasket anyway and maybe just switch them out every few months or so the the extra one doesn’t have a chance to get dry and crack. Just one possible work around.

    Greetings Leisa, I'm new to canning. I grew up with my mom canning but I was too busy to learn😉. I've purchased everything I think I need. Jars and lids are plentiful where I live. My problem is I'm terrified I'm going to mess something up. Also while lids are plentiful how many should I purchase?

    • @KellyS_77
      @KellyS_77 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Don’t be terrified! Pressure canning is easy and actually quite safe. If you have a modern canner it’s nearly impossible for it to explode unless you intentionally alter the canner to do so. The canner has multiple safety features to prevent explosion. My suggestion is to start with something simple like raw pack chicken (ugly chicken) or pork, whatever you eat and can find on sale. It sounds intimidating, but it’s actually pretty simple once you do it.

    • @Freedom-em3zb
      @Freedom-em3zb 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KellyS_77 thank you. I guess I'm just worried about making my family sick even though I totally grew up on can food. Do you know how many lids I should purchase?

    • @KellyS_77
      @KellyS_77 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Freedom-em3zb no idea how many lids. I tried to think of lids in terms of how many jars I have. I have about 72 lids and about 36 jars. I can use each jar twice before I run out of lids.
      Realistically it probably won’t work that way and I’ll end up using the pint jars more than the other sizes, but it gives me a number so I don’t just keep endlessly buying lids.
      Right now we’re mostly eating through canned food we’ve bought from the store, and only home canning things we can’t get at the store. I’d love to can some ugly chicken, but we’ve got a lot of canned chicken already on the shelf to rotate through first.

    I entered All American Pressure Canner into DuckDuckGo and a site popped up that showed them for $180 for the 25qt. I've been burned trying to buy canning lids that ended up coming from China and I could not find any information or reviews on the site that came up. I wish I could find an All American for such a great price, but since normal prices are around $350-$400 for that size and even the company's own website says they are out of stock..well I'm afraid it sounds too good to be true. They also had La Creuset cookware for about $80, which is also pretty deeply discounted in my experience. I'm a little curious just what would arrive if I ordered from them, as I doubt it would resemble what I expected to get.

      Same thing happened to me. I have an 8 quart. The gasket is so loose now I have to put the lid on while trying to hold the gasket in place.

      Try website pressurecooker-outlet.com Theyhave lots of Mirro parts. They also have a 1-800 number so maybe someone could help you find the correct gasket. Hope this helps.👩‍🌾💚

    I took your advice, looked on Market place, craig's list...for my area... people are charging new price, for used ones! New ones.. people trying to get $35-$50 more than I can get at Walmart, Amazon..

    Rub the writing on the bottom of your canner with chalk. Make it much easier to read.

    thanks, leisa! are there any issues with mirro canners? i thought they were comparable with presto, but seems more people use presto.. appreciate anyone's input!

      I had a mirro for 35 years and it was great. Similar to the Presto with the dial gage and the metal vent that drops. Wonderful canner.

    Hi Leisa when you mention that the presto can't be used in a open flame does that mean you can use on a Gas stove? I'm currently on electric but planning on a gas stove when we move but I too have wrist/hand issues and probably won't want to change to the all American.

      A gas stove is fine. You need to know the BTUs which should not exceed 12000

    I should have watched this all before I purchased this propane thing from the mexican store that sells all different kinds of cooking contraptions. I have a ceramic stove from 2004 and a low hood vent( thank you dear husband who tries to do stuff himself to save $.🙄. So I thought I could use it outside to can. Your previous video said not to doon open flame. The cord thing has 120 psi. It looks like you can regulate the flame.
    It runs on propane. The brand name is Loty. Does anyone who might read this know anything about what I am blabbering about? Unfortunately I was way l aid prepping due to 4 surgeries

    Hey Leisa, thank you for your information. I Wish that Pressure Canners are available and would be recommended here in Germany. They have definitly should be. I don't know how the Situation is in other Countries of Europe but here in my Country Pressure Canning will be titled as a high risk. For me a Paradoxum. Pressure Cooking is ok but Canning not. Who would unterstand it?😲🤔
    But it is good to know all these for the Time it will be okay.😘

      Make sure to line up the arrows on the lid and canner. Sometimes a new gasket makes it harder to shut

      I’ve already done both these things and it still doesn’t close! Perhaps part of the actual tabs are bent?! I’ll have to take it to the county extension office and see if they can figure it out.
