I need to know how to take the sliding piece off lol
Once you have removed the entire unit from the console, you can slide the lid of the unit all the way off the back.
I removed the screw but can't push my tray forward, 2004 VW Jetta. thoughts?
Me neither...it looks like that you need remove it the whole center console.
I did a number of ordinary 'pushes'. Went away, returned, tried again, went away.... succeeded with more determined pushes.
Be sure to watch the video carefully and do exactly what the demonstrator does. Be certain to first remove the ashtray component and the torx screw before trying to remove the unit. Otherwise, you will break some flimsy plastic necessary to support the unit.
The ashtray unit has some plastic clips on the bottom which hook onto a thin metal bar. These clips require the entire unit to be pushed forward slightly toward the nose of the car (after removing the screw!) before it can be lifted and pulled out. When removing the unit, it can be helpful to partially open the lid at certain times to improve maneuverability. Watch the video to see when.
When putting the unit back in, be careful not to press down hard since you easily break the plastic tabs that the thin metal crossbar attaches to. This is the cross bar that the ashtray unit hooks onto with clips.
