The R84 is killer! warmth and smoothness for days!
Easy to hear the differences, and very helpful, thanks.
Great test....I really dig the R84. It's definitely the classic ribbbon sound!
Ha. I was just trying to decide between these three so this was just what I needed. :) All sound great but maybe the 'veil' in front of the r84 is making it sound too soft for my taste. It sounds really good on the girl's voice though. The n22 and r92 are quite similar. The guitar amp reveals their difference well. I think the n22 is the one for me, mainly because I'll be using it for vocals, acoustic guitar and guitar amp (clean rockabilly sound) for both studio and live situations. It's the most robust of them too I guess.
Great demo. The nuvo does sound crisp and present... but isn't that what condensers are for? I dig the darker low-mid (ribbon) thang of the r84.
I liked the R84 overall, but preferred the Nuvo on her voice. I need to get a pair of R84's...
Thanks very much, this is a really useful comparison. Was surprised how very different they were! The Nuvo 22 was significantly brighter. Would you say it was more accurate to the sound in the room, or, a bit of extra high end hype on the mic?
Hi Steve, the Nuvo N22 definitely has the presence gig covered, as well as less proximity effect. The R84 is obviously the darkest on top, however that beefy body and smooth response is the real reason to invest there. The R92 to me comes across the most balanced vs what we hear in the room, with a punchy midrange and big but not hyped bottom.
These are very general statements about each, of course you can hear for yourself which is why we do these things.
Happy to take care of you on any AEA products too!
The n22 sounded perfect of the female vocal.
I don't very much like the Nuvo 22 on the electric guitar, but I love it on the piano. Pardon my ignorance, but what piece is it, by the way?
It is the theme to Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds" (which isn't the first time it was used as a movie theme).
ZenProAudio The song is "Green Leaves of Summer" from the movie "The Alamo" with John Wayne in 1960. Great song. Covered by many. Excellent mic demo!
tritone inversion I didn't know the song's official title but I did know that QT recycled it from the Alamo. Glad you dig it!
Great vid!
I'm in need of a mic that will do acoustic and lower scale female and male singers.
In this clip: Love the r84 on vox but it seems to lack a little definition on acoustic. N22 is clear but seems to lack a bit of the bottom end. The r92 is balanced but sounds a bit harsh on the high end.
Any input?
Nerve Crush I don't find the R92 harsh at all, it's very balanced actually. You should see our N8 vs R88 video, the N8 might be a candidate for you as well. Happy to take care of you, we sell AEA all day long and love the brand.
Sure is fun shopping for a new mic. Thanks for this demo. I was wondering what Mic pre you were using for this. I am considering each of these mics, but wonder how they would do with my two main mic pres - a Langevine DVC and an Avalon 737. I know the N22 is Phantom powered but what about the other two? How would either of them do with my pre's. Thanks
The DVC might have an issue as those are what, max +50dB gain? You could always couple it with a Triton Audio Fethead or other booster if needed.
I think that N22 sweet spoot its a few inches closer to the source, like i saw in many reviews. As you get far from the source, it gets thin.. This its a closer mic, diferent from all kind of ribbons.
Said that i think this it´s not a fair comparision.
Vocals, acoustic guitar and female vocals are all in relatively "close mic" positions.
But not close enough.
In the vide we see that N22 it´s the same distance that others, but its need half inch to really "speaks", many modern ribbons are probably 8 inchs sweet spot.. n22 it´s probably half away, at 4 inchs from the source..
On the website the R92 is billed as having 2 distinct sound qualities from the two sides.
I've heard the r84 has a similar feature but not according to the website. Can you clarify?
I really liked the 84 on voice but thought the highs didn't cut it for acoustic.
R92 is the best one
There is a balance and musicality about that mic on each source that is impressive for sure, sort of just fits on everything. The others have more of their own sound and I suspect is equally attractive to those who want that size (R84) or cut (N22).
yes it just captures the natural sound best. The crispy high, the harmonics, balanced mid and bass and very good dynamic. The better AEA mic would be KU4 but it is out of my budget. And it doesn't sound 4 times better than R92.
cool. but i have a cuestion, i can use n22 for trompet, trombone and saxo? thanks
MARES PRODUCTIONS Sure, it could definitely handle that!
