The book received in 7-1 is a hint for how you access the secret level in 7-3, it mentions vines that couldn't be cut apart but could possibly be burned. And the trees in 7-3 are specifically a reference to those who died from suicide
Correction: Big Johnanator is a reference to A boss fight from DUSK, another New Blood published game. The Soap that appears in certain levels is a shared Easter egg with DUSK as well (along with other Easter eggs)
Not just dusk. Big John is voiced by New Blood CEO Dave Oshry first appeared in Rise/return of the triad back in 2013, and has been referenced in almost every New Blood game since.
The 1000-THR Earthmover is a reference to centaurs. Since we know that the one we fight was made in Japan, given the signs language, 1000 would roughly be pronounced “Sen.” Combining it with THR gives “Senthr,” which is very close to centaur.
The book you get to read after the 7-1 Big Johninator fight actually refers to this. "I doubt there's any blade sharp enough to cut the vines, and the only fire that could burn through it would need to be hot enough to melt metal..." -said book
In 7-1 when the Minotaur rushes through the wall, go where he came from and to your right there’s a door closed off by rubble, If u Noclip through u can find a very flat Hakita

I heard somewhere that the "jojo poses" are based on poses of old statues and that besides being a reference they could also work as their own thing. Idk though i forgot where i saw it.
that might be because hirohiko araki uses photos of greek and roman statues as references for a lot of his art, so some of the poses are actually from old statues. in this context, however, Hakita definitely meant it to be a jojo reference
Araki used old statues and art to take reference for his poses. One of his artworks is based on Napoleon Bonaparte riding a horse. Some of the iconic poses you see are most likely inspired by these old artworks, but not exactly copied. It is Araki's own thing; save for a couple of references like DIO's iconic back pose showing the Joestar birthmark on him. It's inspired from an old album that I don't know the source of.
for 7-S you need to guide a streetcleaner all the way back to the Secret entrance for it to burn the remains of what it seems leafs and bushes on the path.

the part where people were turned into trees was the creepiest part in dantes inferno to me, even moreso because it was the punishment for suicide, which actually makes a lot of sense because it traps you in a kind of half existence where you have to observe and feel but you can no longer act in any way, much like how a person who fails a suicide attempt may end up paralyzed or otherwise permanently incapacitated without actually dying
In the level with the -minautor- the way it's written looks like a reference to the book "House of leaves" where it's always crossed but i might be wring
in 7-3 those leaves blocking the door are not linked to the buttons. Instead, you will need to lure a street cleaner over there to burn the leaves. ON the other side of the door is something in construction.
Big johninator is based on big john from DUSK, also the dante's inferno reference is to the forest of suicide. Those who commit suicide are turned into trees.
Correction for the Dante's inferno reference: thw trees are people who have commited acts of violence against nature or themselves so littering will get you to violence in dante's inferno O and its also the Suicide forest
