  • Both knives are fantastic to own and use. Both are excellent choices. it’s all about preference really

the big brother is not a display knife it is a fighting knife. like u said it is a slasher. i t was never meant to be a camp knife for batoning.

    Kid has no clue:
    - All the knives of his collection show very little to none wear (especially the Becker's coatings wear super fast with very little use).
    - He thinks the Becker has the better "stabbing ability" for no good reason. (the Becker has an unsharpened, very thick drop point, a very "rough" coating that has a lot of traction and is the reason why so many people strip off the coating from their Becker knives, in contrast to the Big Brother, which has a very pointy, almost hocked tip, it is thinner and the coating is very smooth, and also the serrated spine would greatly improve stabbing ability on the full length of the blase, which makes the Big Brother the clear winner in this point)

@@Ve-suvius Agree to most of what you say. Well the coating on my last BK2 (bought in 2020) was still very rough, so it had to go. Maybe they changed something up by now, which would be a good reaction to customer's wishes.

It's awesome to see people still seeing this video after four years. Eat do you guys think I should do with the bk9 in case I Wana make another video? Lol funnily enough the big brother in this vid is actually my older brothers big brother haha. And yeah at that time they weren't used often. I should make a update of the ones I use daily. In a suburb environment it's tough to find functionality with a bk9. For a good edc fixed blade I recommend the 5.5 inch Becker or utility knife. In the end though it's preference. The knife I most recommend is the one you enjoy carrying the most. Thx for watching and commenting man

Both great knives but your right while they both clam to be fighting/ utility knives. The bk is a crap fighting knife way too thick heavy and awkward to be a fighting knife it’ll work if it’s what you have but not a great weapon. The bk is one of the best survivor/ brush craft tools you could ask for though. The bb is a crap survival tool too weak with its thin blade and rat tail tang designed completely wrong for hard heavy use. The bb is an ideal fighting knife thin fast light sharp and deadly. There really is no perfect combination of thick heavy robust survival knife and thin light fast combat knife.

      True words.
For social encounters the Kraton handled Ka-bar's are excellent.
I never liked the Becker's regarding this.
Can they be used to kill? Ofcourse.
But the handle, balance, overall feeling in hand is just not as good for that. The tip is not as good/efficient as the kraton/leather handled ka-bar's.
For hacking up wood...➡ Fiskars X7 or any other hatchet or machete.

    • @ayjay359
      @ayjay359 ปีที่แล้ว

There are big and thick blades which are very good and fast to move as a weapon.
The cold steel trailmaster or Fällkniven NL1 for example.
They are so well balanced you feel like it’s a feather.
I am not a fan of them but they work. Just the price is a bad joke. You can get cheaper stuff which just do the same job. Most of the time it’s just fantasy in our heads.
If someone would really need something for combat, you would take a dagger or a sword. Much more useful and impressive.

Even though I have a few higher end large blades, the bk9 still remains one of my favs. Absolutely love the design. An easy solution to the handle slickness is stippling, it actually looks super awesome and offers great traction.

Shame about those Rat Tangs. Kabar should get rid of those rat tangs and re-engineer their combat knives with thicker stronger tangs as they have done with the BK9.

    • @Ve-suvius
      @Ve-suvius 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No man.
The stick tang is what you want in a fighting knife.
Get a hatchet if you want to attack wood. Or a folding saw.
So many misinformed people , due to the batoning crowd/fad on the internet.
You think that our ancestors were all wrong when making swords and daggers with stick tangs?
Gladius, bastard sword, rondel dagger, sabre swords, Viking swords etc.
It's all about the balance. And they were plenty tough.
Get a BK9 of you want to split wood with a knife. There are already enough brick like knives for those tasks.
ESEE is another. ESEE5 BK2. What's the use for that.

Montanan bushcrafter here. I would kill for a Big Brother that was 0.2 and non serrated. I'm in the Gallatin Valley area an we have a FUCKTON of Grizzlies and Black Bears as well as Mountain Lions (which aren't as big of as a threat as you'd think but if if ever happened you're gonna get smoked faster than you can imagine - since the 1800s there's only been 17 fatalities but they were reported as almost unavoidable "ya dun fucked up" deaths) I have no problem with the tang on the KA-BAR tang, I have a standard non serrated (non marked) KA-BAR and it's gone through helllll far more than my BK9. Also slapping on a nicer handle to the BK9 doesn't make it a better big brother outright. It's still funk and wobbly and I think that has to due to grip alignment. It's sooooo far back, though its not horrible. I remember when the BK9 came out there was this odd fascination of having your grips centering along your knive's spine or their literal edge, more the latter than not. It was a weird time in knives but it's not that bad. But still, the Big Brother would be op if it was thicker and non serrated. There's been sooooo many times I wish I've had it but refuse to carry it on my person due to those drawbacks. The BK9 is pretty cool and if you don't have one do get one. I've chilled out between my buck nighthawk (old model - non TAPS) and my standard soap bar KA-BAR. Side note if you wanna know the best knives I've ever EVER and TO THIS DAY use as a hard working Montanan from the hellish pits of the scary rocky hilly craggy parts of Kansas (yes those exist) it's the Kershaw Hotwire. Cost 10 buckaroo's. It cleans my KA-BAR's clock daily. Hasn't failed no serious wobble, no problems at all. Takes an edge - holds an edge. If it does break eventually fuckit, it was 10 buck in a Walmart. It's also helped me in so dumbassery in mechanics I won't admit to lol. Pretty good bit to have on you at all times

Kraton is a synthetic elastomer. Basically a much tougher and chemically stable rubber.

Ahh thanks for the info. So kraton should in theory hold up longer then normal rubber. Good to know

I have kraton handles on my bicycle.
After more than ten years of riding that bike daily for miles, they are still perfectly fine. All weather conditions.
A little wear(scratch) from having the bike falling several times on the concrete(the handle taking the impact) . But still really comfortable to hold.

Good comparison video! I'm glad you covered balance/handling at the end there -- that is a hugely overlooked (by most reviewers) but critical component. If you are swinging a knife, machete, sword etc. -- it should handle well with good balance and not tire your arm out too quickly. Important for camping/survival as well as combat.
