      removed the throttle sensor, the idle air control valve connector. and the map sensor connector. the car basically had no idea how much throttle i was giving it but it somehow managed to start/run properly. limited me to 2k rpm tho.

    This was a testament to Honda, pretty cool that it still ran with a catastrophic failure like that. For those faced with the same issue, no compression in an engine, this was a great tutorial in how to determine where the loss of compression is. I do have one suggestion though. Rather than removing the cylinder head, and spending over an hour to determine the failure point, using a borescope in the spark plug hole could have given the same information with much less work. It still gives a better total picture to disassemble as shown in the video, but for a backyard mechanic looking for a quicker diagnosis, a borescope would have yielded the same result with much less labor and time lost. This is not to say that what Eric did was wrong, because it was by no means wrong. Just highlighting another avenue for diagnosis for those interested.

    I wish I knew you needed one a month ago. I just got rid of a 2001 civic 5speed manual with 73,000 original miles for a grand. It had brand new tires, brand new brakes, battery, and ball joints. Why did I sell it you ask ? The trans stated making noise and I took it to Multistate transmissions and they said it needed to be rebuilt. They rebuilt it and three weeks later same noise. Took it back and they said one of the brand new bearings they put in went band and chewed up the synchro for 4th gear. It took them a month to find another rebuild kit and within days I could hear the same noise coming back again. I sold it immediately while it was still preforming perfectly and told the buyer all about the experience and who did the work. They were thrilled and never came back or called but I’d bet my bottom dollar it’s going to happen again. Shame cause it was a spectacular car up until that point, $25 to fill it and it lasted 2weeks. Bought a new Corolla now and it seems pretty good.

    The Honda Civic is probably the best car ever made, I have a 1997 Honda Civic and it starts first turn of the key, never gave any trouble, just a pity that the body is rotten but I'm in the process of replacing the rear arches and repairing the sills or rocker panels as they are called in the US&A. Brilliant little cars although in Europe, parts for older Hondas are a little hard to come by. The model I have is the MB2 5 door model only made in Europe between 1995 and 2001

    My 1992 ran on 3 cyls for almost 3+months. I had a broken valve in the head. I did a complet rebuild of the spare engine I had. Replaced the 2 valves in the head, installed complet rebuild engine, it runs better than it ever did in the eleven years Ive had it. Manual transmission, new clutch n bearing last year.

    I had a '96 civic with the exact same engine. It was a good old little car that reliably took me around the Inland Empire in Ca for nursing school. Sad to see that engine in such bad shape.

    I wish I’d known you needed this. I just junked an 05 Civic a couple weeks ago. < 70K on the clock. Rear end total, but still driveable. Car was perfece accept all the body damage. Was my Aunt’s car. I would have yanked engine and trans for you before they hauled the car away. Getting it from Jersey to Ohio would have been the problem though. I hope you can find another.

    Cars like that you can never lose on, regardless of what's wrong with them. You've got over $1,000 worth of parts for sub-$500 and a little effort towing her back. Bulbs, fuses, relays, wiring, wheels, driveline, etc.. Then when you're done stripping parts off it, at least $100 for scrap! A win-win.

    I owned one like that. a 2000 EX civic. The shock absorbers were busted but the thing ran like a champ. Broke my heart when I had to sell it.
    I owned a 2005 ES8, 2007 FD4 then a 2012 1.5S City after it, none can compare to the '00 civic with regards to parts and minimum maintenance frequency.

    I bought a 1990 Toyota Corolla from copart Sikeston MO. Said ran and drove with 117xxx miles. I got there and it was only running on 2 cylinders. I did those diagnostic tests you did and determined bhg between 3 and 4. 4afe is a bulletproof motor so I fixed it. It's my daily now 😁

    One careful owner 15 bad ones. Seen plenty thrown rods in my time but never one that didn't peek out the side of the block let alone drive home pmsl.
    Anyhoo, rest of it will make a fine rolling parts department I'm sure.

    Thank you Eric for posting this informative video. I'll be using it as a guide to diagnose a crank but no start concern on a 2000 Toyota Camry 2.2. I purchased this vehicle with 155k in hopes that the only problem is a slipped timing belt. I didn't have any tools to check the condition of the timing belt or spark plugs however I was able to crank the engine over with an almost fully charge battery. The only thing I've done is check for spark and fuel which it did have. I cranked the engine over for a good 10 seconds and the compression sounded consistent. I hope once I remove the spark plugs and perform a leak down test that everything is in the clear. Again thank you for posting these informative and entertaining videos. "Stay dirty" ":)

    I wondered if when you were about to turn it to TDC for the leakdown, you got tricked a little by the position of the distributor. At that point, me not knowing the distributor trick, I would have just looked down the hole and barred it over, which if you woulda done, no movement. Never seen no movement. Great video Eric.       @im ok12 considering its a honda, its totally possible it was ran low on oil several times. Oil is the first line of defense when cooling an engine

    Crazy. I had an 05 civic base model that I put 250k miles on with only one timing belt change, and the rest was just tires, brake pads, and oil changes... still had the original struts!! Wish I wouldn’t have traded it in on a newer car as it still ran and drove great

    I just got a 91 civic for 200 bucks, the previous owner thought he could fix it by putting a new dizzy on it, to make a long story short, the problem that would have kept this engine going for another 120k miles was a $10 thermostat, but because it never got replaced, 2 of the conrods turned into a bunch of chunks and somehow still managed to run just enough to get it up a dirt road with about a 20 degree incline into my small shop where it finally gave up the ghost completely. Seems it knew it was finally in good hands.

    Sorry for that disappointment but it made for a really educational video.
    [Spoiler Alert]
    1:) It seems you ran it on one cylinder during the initial testing - I didn't know that was possible.
    2:) I didn't realise two pistons could move in sync like that, I thought they always moved out of phase of each other.
    3:) I had no idea such large chunks could block the oil pickup - I thought there was a fine mesh covering that thing.
    Thanks for taking the time to show us non-mechanics these failures. It's only when you see the consequences that you can really appreciate how important regular maintenance is.

    ETCG...thanks for keeping on. So many 'fix it' channels turn into what I call "lifestyle" channels where they don't actually wrench all that much on cars anymore. By the way, at my preferred local place, they take some pains to list whether the engine and trans are working, or not, when the car is put in their yard. I pulled an engine with the confidence that it was running good.

    my GSR hydrolocked and bent a rod and surprisingly nothing else had damage. crank was good, block was good, etc but the rod was suuuper bent. gonna start rebuilding the engine tomorrow, wish me luck. it's my first time lmao

    Hey man, REALLY good video. Love the specific information you give and general mechanic tips that I don’t have common sense with.
    I’ve recently put an extreme oil flush during my first oil change (not recommended for more than 10 min) and had to leave it overnight because the oil pan bolt was stuck.
    It was working okay after I flushed it but some problems have been coming up.
    Before tearing an engine apart for my only car for the first time I’ve been looking for information - and this video has been very helpful… at showing me what might be causes my knocking engine and unreliable oil test 😭😭😭

    Seen a few engines run that way, once the problem cylinder is no longer enabled they run pretty good lol
    Was towing a buddy one time and tje vehicle he was in had extra ventilation in the block from a thrown rod, engine was seized but being a manual trans he dumped the clutch at about 30mph and the thing unlocked and ran. We unhooked from my tow vehicle and drove the rest of the way home which was about 10 miles. Once we shut it off though it locked up solid never to run again.

    had a 2000 si (pfp), i bought it before i knew about cars and it had a b series and this exact thing happened and i drove it for 100,000 miles before i rebuilt and then i sold the engine for more then i paid for the car and thankfully the car came with the stock engine so that was good👍🏽old hondas are something else

    I just want to let people know that you can also hook up a momentary switch inline to the wire so all you have to do is push the switch to complete the circuit. The switch is only a couple bucks at your local hardware store. I had to do this in a car with a faulty ignition switch tumbler. Put the key in, turn to on position, hit the button, and drive wherever you need to go. 😎

    I have a 99 Civic. My transmission is going also. I bought it new. Used synthetic oil for all of the 250k miles. I stopped fixing the "little things" since the trans is on it's way out and the car is not worth putting a new/used/rebuilt trans in. Sigh it was a faithful car for the last 21+ years. My only car for all that time. Practically the only car I have driven in the last 21 years. The "trouble shifting" it has is that the shifting linkage is VERY touchy. Once in gear it is fine, as long as you don't breathe on the shifter. But especially in the winter it doesn't want to engage right away...not slipping really just kind of not really engaging. I figure it is in the linkage INSIDE of the trans and would require removal of the entire transaxle to fix. That is a nada..no go.. ain't gonna happen.
    OK, the GOOD NEWS... The 1999 Honda Civic was the BEST SELLING car of that year...There are millions of them out there. Shouldn't cost an arm and leg for replacement parts including your engine. (If you know why these cars don't want to shift, please let me know)

    I remember about 35 years ago a girl had her car towed in, said a part fell off while driving she said the part was in the car. I was expecting a muffler, but to my surprise there was a half of a connecting rod laying on the floor! I drove that car into my garage with a hole in the block. Funny thing that rod was totally dry, no sign of oil. I could never figure out why the engine didn't lock up instead of throwing the rod through the block.

    Gotta love these kind of videos. I wonder how much the junk yard knew about what was found, presumably it was assessed by a mechanic before being hauled off to pic a part. If the engine was good I wonder if they would have pulled the engine and sold it separately.

      They didn't know anything about it. They just picked up this car at auction for me. The 'Mechanic Special' usually indicates a major mechanical problem.

      Back in the mid 00's wasn't Honda (or maybe another Japanese company, i can't remember) who proposed something like that? Like an engine computer diagnostics system that deactivates a cylinder and essentially puts you in limp mode when it detects something wrong with the engine. Ah, memory is a bad thing to lose, but i'm pretty sure i read that in a magazine back in the day.

    Fortunately there are millions of 16D series engines out there; it's just a matter of finding one that had been taken care of. Good luck with that.

    In my HS auto shop class, we had a Sun scope and it could shut down each cylinder to diagnose a misfire. Most engines that came into the shop at that time were V8s.
    I am very surprised that it still ran after the rod failure.

    Testament to Honda’s single cam reliability. “Toss a rod and the other 3 will get ya home”
    I bought one of these years ago with a bad knock, tried to get the connecting rod to come out, wouldn’t. Put a “replacement” engine in it and around 850 miles later out of no where that engine tossed a rod and lit the whole car up.

    I have a 2000 civic coupe ex. I built a d16z6 bottom end y8 head intake. Built the motor in my kitchen now shes at 19psi. Making 360ish whp. She weighs 2120 pounds. Good times.

    My '98 Honda's engine will last forever. I'm parking it in late October then licence my Saturn for winter (I got both for free and fixed them up on my own - 80%).
    But, brakes aren't gtreat and there are rattles underneath on both. So, next summer's projects are under the cars.

    I hope all mechanics can diagnose like he does. Most of the mechanics i've encountered just play everything by the ear and says: ah, thats this and that. We need to replace etc and never solves any problem.

    Had that happen to my 340 Wildcat except it sent the connecting rod through the side of the block. It looked like a little hand sticking out of the side of the engine waving "Hi there!". Ripped my guts out when I saw that.
    Never seen a connecting rod fail like that and all the pieces just tucked out of the way of moving parts. Usually I've seen them make all kinds of unhappy noises and/or punch through the block or pan.

    That’s sad with only 132k miles on it with a blown engine. Makes me glad my 00 civic ex coupe is still running great with 228k on the clock.

    Im guessing the mistery went like that:
    At least 1 careless owner who neclected the car.
    Oilchanges havent been done early enough and regularly
    Oil rings got cloged up with old oil
    Car starts to eat oil
    Careless owner doesnt notice that because he/she is well, careless
    Engine runs dry
    Oil light starts flickering from time to time because oil level so low that the pick up sucks air in corners
    Rod bearings dont like that
    Owner notices the oil light and puts in oil
    Rod bearings have allready taken a bit damage from that whole thing
    And then one day, it starts to knock because of that and the last owner who was on the car at the time it happened brought it to a shop and they found the problem an suggested the scrap yard.

      @@sergeymatpoc it was skipped for a while at least. Long enough to do damage to the bearings. But that damage does not neccessarily show right away in form of a rod knock. That car can very well run a few thousand miles without noises when its minor damage on the bearing. That minor damage can cause a catastrophic failure later down the line.

      @@99Lezard99 I should disagree here, I don't believe lack of oil can lead to catastrophic failure later if the oil situation was fixed before making hole in engine block. I agree that some pressure loss will happen with damaged bearing, in some cases the bearing material can travel to other bearings, but in overall that won't lead to fatal condition (I think so), these Honda engines were very tough.

      @@sergeymatpoc im not sure about that. But im sure i wouldnt wanna have an engine that was run dry at some point. Of course you cant really proove that this happened and when it knocks its so fucked that youll not be able to tell if that was the case afterwards anyway. Id say it would be a gamble to just top of oil and keep going.

      "Owner notices the oil light and puts in oil" I doubt that... Many don't even know what that means. LOL I had a guy drove company truck without oil from customer's house all the way back to the company parking lot. Next morning, found engine seized.

    Dallas JDM has a d16y8 JDM, give them a call :) I was gonna replace my Y7 with that but got a good deal on a K 👌 Keep the old-school hondas on the road ! Good luck!

    CHANGE YOUR OIL PEOPLE. What a shame! Easily used up only 1/3 or even 1/4 of it's engine life! The owner should have bought a Dodge and thrown that away. Sorry for your loss Eric.
