    Hello Dave, Thank you for sharing your experience. The pictures and narration are very enjoyable. This trip is especially interesting to my wife and me. We purchased a Cape Dory 36 last year. This year we will sail her on Lake Champlain, gaining knowledge and experience, with a plan to sail her to the Atlantic in 2024. Maybe we’ll see you along the coast of Maine.

      Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! It was a great trip. I wish we had been able to sail more in Lake Champlain. It is a really beautiful area. I'm envious that you will be able to sail there this summer and congratulations on your purchase. Cape Dory is a great boat. I'll be on the lookout in Maine!

    what a great trip! What was the thing you wished you had at any point (besides wind) on the boat that you didnt? What was that thing that was unexpectedly handy you'd want to share with us other sailors?

    • @sailingcardinalpoints
      @sailingcardinalpoints  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Claude - great questions!
      I did a fair amount of provisioning before the trip, including buying a complete set of screwdrivers, hammers, socket wrenches, gloves, and more so I had most things I needed. There were two electrical reliability issues that became worse during the trip: 1) the GPS was connected to 12v car adapter socket at the instrument panel, which was sensitive and reset the GPS, sometimes at uncomfortable moments; 2) the USB charger, which charged phones and other backup electronics.
      I fixed the GPS power issue by permanently running power cable down through the binnacle to the electrical system below decks so it could no longer be accidentally disconnected by people (or dogs) in the cockpit. I suspect no other boat would have had the same setup. We fixed the USB charger during the trip, but it continued to act up later, so I replaced it completely so it is now reliable.
      Regarding things that are unexpectedly handy, it would probably be empty capped 2-3 liter bottles. Once, after we filled the boat with diesel, some of it made it into the bilge. We used the plastic bottles to separate the diesel from the bilge water. I also have found these bottles useful when replacing engine coolant.
      I have found a couple of things since then that are very useful when working on the boat: an extendable magnetic pick up tool and flexible grabber claw to retrieve dropped screws from the dark, otherwise unreachable depths of the boat.
      Thanks again for watching!
      Dave

    Did the marinas do the complete mast raising and stepping, or did you have to participate? Did they make the cradle? Fun trip! We are learning to sail on Lake Champlain with our new-to-us Tartan 30!

    • @sailingcardinalpoints
      @sailingcardinalpoints  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Robert - thanks for watching! I wish we could have spent more time sailing on Lake Champlain, but we needed to get her to Maine. The boat had a cradle already in Vermont and the Shelburne yard unstepped the mast and built the supports for the trip south without us being present. Riverview Marine Services in Catskill, NY stepped the mast after we passed all of the low bridges and required us to help out. We made sure the mast was seated well below decks and also attached and tightened the shrouds. Took about 3 hours all together. It was a great trip - I highly recommend it! Good luck with your Tartan 30 - great boat! Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks!

      @@sailingcardinalpoints Good to know about the Shelburne yard! Thanks! Are you in Boothbay? We have a couple of sailing friends there, one of who owns a bright yellow catamaran; if you see him, say hi to Carl!

    • @sailingcardinalpoints
      @sailingcardinalpoints  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cellobob2358 Yes, we are in Boothbay. A bright yellow catamaran should definitely stand out - I'll keep an eye out! My exposure to the Shelburne yard was short, but it seemed to be a nice place. I like that they allow folks to work on the boat during the offseason, something that is becoming less and less common in Maine.

    may I ask why you chose Newburgh to stop? Serious question? was it on a cruising guide? recommendation? Next time you (or anyone else heads down Hudson, my Yacht Club (Chelsea YC 3 nm north of Newburgh on the Eastern shore) has free guest moorings for boats up to 36 ft. and We'd welcome you all with open arms........

    • @sailingcardinalpoints
      @sailingcardinalpoints  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mike,
      Thanks for the question and good to know! When I was planning the trip, I was hoping that the mast would already be back in when we united with the boat, but the marina required me to be present when stepping the mast. They did a great job, but it delayed our departure. I was originally hoping to get further south, past Newburgh. I had heard less than favorable reports about Newburgh, but it was convenient at the time as darkness approached. Since I didn't belong to a yacht club, I didn't give them much consideration since reciprocal access would not available and many are private. Great to hear about the policies at your YC - no doubt it would have been a perfect place for us to stop - wish I had done more research on that front!

    How long did this trip take you: 1 week?
    2 weeks? More ?

    • @sailingcardinalpoints
      @sailingcardinalpoints  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi rerobisonr - thanks for the question! Ultimately, it took 13 actual sailing days, one more than ideally planned since we had pretty bad weather leaving Gloucester, MA towards Portland, ME. We ended up ducking into Newburyport, MA and spent the rest of the day with friends, then proceeded to Portland the next day. The weather during the rest of the trip was really quite good, so we were lucky. We did not do any sailing at night during the trip.
      From an actual time standpoint, the trip took 16 days, since we left the boat in Catskill, NY at the end of the first weekend and didn't get back to the boat until the following Thursday. That way, I could use three weekends in order to take fewer vacation days from work. The timing also worked out better for folks helping me with the trip.
      If the weather had been fouler, it would have taken longer. Fortunately, there are several good marinas along the way.

    I don't understand why you motored lake Champlin you could ha sailed all the way to chipman point before stepping you mast. I've lived on and sailed the lake for the past two years. It's a get place to spend a couple summers. I'm going to circumnavigate the lake one last time before moving the boat out to the salt this fall.

    • @sailingcardinalpoints
      @sailingcardinalpoints  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Saling Samantas, thanks for watching and commenting! If I had had more time, I probably would have done what you are suggesting. We had plans for the boat in Maine, so I needed to get the boat to Maine as quickly as possible. As it turns out, the day we motored to Whitehall, there was practically no wind the entire day, so even it I had left the mast up, I would have had to motor anyway. If we lived closer, I might have considered spending the summer on the lake.
      I think it is great that you have the time to explore the lake. Enjoy it! It is a great trip to the salt as well! Thanks!

    what is the widest beam you can get away with making that journey?

    • @sailingcardinalpoints
      @sailingcardinalpoints  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Douglas, thanks for the question! According to the NY Canals web site - www.canals.ny.gov/wwwapps/navinfo/navinfo.aspx?waterway=champlain - the minimum beam is 45 feet, which is within the locks. You would want to add space for fenders and fender boards, so from a practical standpoint, you would probably not want to take a boat with more than a 43 foot beam through the canal.
