  • What we have here is something a bit radical. Peter Dennis has been working for a while on his ‘Paperboys’ series of cut out and construct figures, from which you can form ranks of two dimensional wargames soldiers. Now with the help of Romanian company “World of Fun’ (or simply Wofun) Peter has transformed his paperboys into plastic boys!

    After nearly 50 years of painting miniatures, my old eyes are no longer up to the task. These miniatures are a blessing! I just ordered my first batch of hoplites and other ancient Greeks!

    I play a lot of Command and colors ancients .... with slightly larger hexes .... you can substitute a stand of WoFun figures for a wooden block of Command and Colors Ancients .... fantastic look .... take care .... Mike

    Hope they keep trying new stuff though, these are cool to see.

    These look great. Just had a look on the website and I think they are actually great value and save hundreds of hours without need to glue and paint. I am a beginner in the hobby and bought loads of 28mm plastic figures and spent weeks making 100 figures. It was fun initially but I got bored and just wanted to spend time playing. I think a full set of 800 18mm figures ready made for 175 pounds is great.

    I’m not a figures painting fan. I’d rather be playing, so these are a fantastic way to get a historic period on the table immediately! I have two Punic War sets and the mass battles look amazing.

    I do not understand the comments about "how expensive" these plexifigs are. I bought my grandson two ACW 25mm armies, 6 24-man units plus two artillery batteries for $150. Ready to put on the table and play. The same lead army from Perry Miniatures would be $250. Plus higher postage. Then to paint the Perry figs would take a couple months. Or hire painting at $4 each = $600. So which is cheaper?! Do it in 18mm at about half the cost.

      Half of the fun of a tabletop army is the painting/converting part. You cant compare full sculpts with a 2D painted image stuck on a plexi glass. Although a clever idea they ruined it going for a ''premium'' version. They could have those printed on acetate film or 0.2mm styrene sheet and keep the cost reasonable. And when I say reasonable that is no more than 50 euros for 2 full armies.

    Use Junior General artwork, colour laser print onto clear plastic sheets (designed to go through lasers). Align the front and back sheets and glue (make sure all soldiers are covered by the glue), then laminate inside a really thick pouch. Trim and re-glue side as needed. Quite tricky but it works to a degree! In the end decided I still prefer conventional 3d models despite the hassle of painting (in my case badly) and the expense.

    Very nice review. went to the site and found all the armies you mention. I ordered some ACW frames for my grandson. If I like them, I will get some for myself. I am thinking of getting figures for the classic wargame book --"Charge." By the way, the name "plastic boys" is strange to me. "Paperboys" was a nice pun for the paper cut outs. How about "plexifigs."

    For that price you might as well use normal 3d models. The only point i can see in these is to try out a period for cheap but at that price its out of the question.

    I don't think this is quite as expensive as it appears at first glance. It averages out at about 35p per 28mm figure- a lot less for 18s. A basic painted army of the same size in 28mm metal/plastic would probably set you back about 10 times that- and upwards for a vg paint job.

    • @joek600
      @joek600 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They could go for acetate film instead of plexiglass which is an expensive material and now whith the whole covid thing in high demand and make 2 sided silkscreen prints for less than a euro a sheet.

      Andrew Franke you cant compare a real miniature army with flat print outs. I mean they look nice and could be great for playtesting various rules before you commit to a real miniature army. But only if the cost is very low. Two armies should not cost more that 50 euros.

    • @sirrathersplendid4825
      @sirrathersplendid4825 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joek600 - Agreed. I guess if you just want a ‘dry run’ you could use the paper armies, which come in at well under €50. These plexifigs seem to be intended to replace 3-D figs and all the kerfuffle they entail.

    Needs a sci fi and a fantasy range, make it the product for wargaming with a friend in a setting you dont want to paint models for.

    • @deepyamandas1192
      @deepyamandas1192 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The fact is this is made solely for historical fans who don't like fantasy and sci fi cause most historical fans tend to see them as enemies. And the fact that miniature wargaming was made for historical fans but it just stayed out and instead fantasy took off..
