She really is a perfectionist. The fact that the fight scene was set at a Chinese restaurant and that the fight was initiated like a traditional initiation before Wushu masters fought is a nod to the culture. I respect it immensely.

As a chinese i would say it is like one of the best combinations of kungfu and modern western scene i‘ve seen. It put the aesthetics of kungfu into this appropriate context instead of just make a duplication or a clumsy imitation of old kungfu movies(like so many artists have done before). The scene that they point each other with swords reminds me of the movie 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon', i can see the confrontation and the restraint of love and emotion, which is like the spirit of chinese kungfu aesthetics but also make sense here in such a dim western urban scenario.

Wow the symbolism! This is what I got out of it:
Her and her lover both worn out and tired, already in “pursuit” of each other. The apprehension in the approach. Sparring, dueling, and somewhat having fun while running through the city. Him running and distancing himself from her. But ultimately coming down to the fatal blow. The moment when she stabs him and he splits her in half along with the lyrics playing at that moment.

Ugh she was literally split in half writing this album; physically with her cysts and emotionally with the breakup. While he was pierced but not broken, even if she tried.😭😭 her mind
And this could be a snapshot of a single fight... or an allegory for the entire relationship, and the beginning of new rocky relationship with how it restarts with Twigs in the seat at the end. Who knows. I love her making me think about it.

This is exactly what I was thinking and trying to put it into words, it’s a representation of the pain of the journey, sad moments, happy moments, the chasing for the other person but that at the end will just break both, being her the most broken. I love how to put all that into words.

I think for some relationships they DO end this way we just can't "see" them as the couple is just physically talking/arguing it out. But if we could....it would be so many of these flying sword fights going on around us daily.....but we are clueless and only see hostile body language or silent treatments of couples sitting in the back furthest part of a bar. The man with the straightsword in the video is Teake. I was actually the one who gave him the audition posting when I heard about it. I’m so proud of him coming so far. To me, the small hand reaching for the sword symbolizes that she actually didn’t hurt him at all, she hurt the part of her that she placed inside of him. She imposed herself into his heart space. And there she stabbed herself through him. He knew she couldn’t hurt him, It was not reciprocated love. She arrived first and he was late, evading.
Another option:
They have met her end many times, she dies and enters a new phase hoping it will be different, but the second she wakes she knows it will not. She will have to win the fight unscathed to escape the loop.
The first option...is exactly that...so sad. I know it's that. You're right. A very deep message. Beautiful

I love everything about this video! In my eyes, this is the downfall of a relationship from her point of view.
In the beginning, he gets to the restaurant before her but from the ending it’s clear that she actually got there first. That already says a lot about how she saw their relationship.
She clearly is struggling to approach him before pulling out the sword. What’s interesting to me during this scene is that he just sits there doing nothing to help her while she’s struggling but he’s ready to jump at the opportunity for a fight.
Although he knows how to keep up with her, that’s not the outcome she’s fighting for so she charges at him.
After that, her poking and splashing him to keep the fight going even though he’s clearly tired to me symbolizes that she wanted him to keep fighting for their relationship. But it looks like he didn’t even know what he was fighting for and just wanted it to be over.
The next thing he does is bring them to what seems like their house and that’s when the fight starts to go his way. What I saw in this scene was him using her weaknesses against her to get his way. Eventually he splits her in two and I think this is the only outcome she could see in their fighting and with her hand dragging the sword into his chest, she understood that she was hurting him as much as he was hurting her.
By the end of it, you can tell she was just done trying and I felt that in my soul.
Everything is up to interpretation. I like to read what you got in your mind watching it. The first time I watched it, I got the feeling that at the end, she was just about to meet him for the first time. And she was just dreaming about it. About falling in love.

I think he hurt her more with how much more damage the big split to her was, probably him ending the relationship and she gave him a little stab unwilling/unnoticed then when she looked down, she had to just finally admit it was over and agree to end it and thats her hand pulling in the sword.

I feel that this assumption not only feeds into toxicity in media, but unintentionally dims her artistry down. This song could be about anyone, anything, or even a complete fantasy. We, as fans, should have the respect for her as an artist to not pin tabloid news to her songs in such a specific way. In a way, it’s like the Taylor Swift paradox: She could write a song about a bird, and people immediately match it to a man in her past. Regardless of the songs true nature, or its quality, the label sticks and the song loses meaning.
To pretend we know what Twigs is writing about in her music, to the extent above, is foolish & somewhat unappreciative of her artistry. If she wants us to know it’s about him, she would say it. However, Twigs (like many artists) want fans to relate to their music personally and emotionally. Sorry, this has become a rant, not intentional. The sword she put in his heart didn’t go in as deep initially as she wanted, as she was split in 2, indecisive over whether she loved him enough to carry the relationship on, asking herself whether she could survive life without him. That last act of her pulling the sword in his heart is her reaching inside of him to sever any love he had for her, it wasn’t enough to just wound him she wanted to kill the love he had for her, and in doing so created a wound so deep that he would never want to go back or love her again.

The end of the battle combo has really stuck with me this past week. My take- although he has broken her (literally split her), she remains in his heart forever, eternally jabbing him from within. He will never escape her. Twigs is immaculate for more than just her unique sound and brilliant cinematography- it is her epic and sophisticated depiction of love as tragedy. And the way that it resonates with every emotionally mature individual on this cruel world.

This is not a video, it's more like a high budget film.
You think this is high budget? Lol........ sorry but as much as I love twigs this was definitely not high budget, the choreography and editing was sloppy and if you look closely there were a lot of bad edits, like when she stabs him in the end, you cant see her sword on his chest but a few panels later they lower the camera to the same spot and now its stabbing him as if it was there the whole time.... i guess people settle for anything and call it high budget 🤷♂️
@@Stand-Alone-Complex yeah I don't think they're that dumb, as it's very clear that she's not piercing him from the beginning, it was most likely a creative choice. You can't expect it to be 100% real, they're literally flying and she's dreaming. Most likely it's a metaphor for how, by cutting her in half, he actually hurt himself emotionally, hence the sword piercing his chest right after and her hand pushing it in even more. You also have to aknowledge that the editing and direction are pretty good, there's a very smooth story telling, the lightning and colouring is also very well thought imo
@@ros734 I don't think they are dumb, but things happen sometimes even to the best artists out there and professionals. You can't rule out the possibility that they might just thought ppl wouldn't notice and went with it. Its happened before in film making, what makes you think this is any exception? Creative metaphor? Maybe, But honestly you can claim anything to be a metaphor these days, even the most basic concepts.. but I personally doubt it was metaphorical. That aside, Everyone perceives things differently, so its fine. I disagree however. I'm aware that it was just a dream. But the transitions were rough in my opinion, the flying looked like bungie jumping, perhaps they wanted to purposely make it look like your stereotypical behind the scenes "raw" form of film making without a green screen or as you'd see in a classical play, we don't know we can only come up with our own metaphorical interpretentions . But it looked off, I understand the story she was trying to convey, but to me it was messy, the concept felt high energy but the performance was tired. It just didn't align. Then it fell flat with the ending. She's always been cryptic with her stories, but this one just didn't deliver. Dont get me wrong, i am a die hard fan, and own all her albums. Even merch, but im just not the type to be biased. Some will love it and that's cool too

Every time I watch/listen to her I feel like I'm eavesdropping on her most private feelings/emotions/thoughts. I feel like I shouldn't be in the shadows, like I'm betraying her trust by watching something so personal, but I can't look away; she captures me and holds me prisoner until the video is over (sometimes even beyond that). I'm not hoping I'm right but here's the vibe i'm getting so far after rewatching the short:
She is drunk and tries to walk to the Chinese restaurant, she sees her lover sitting there and they ended up in a duel (probably a contrasting of their ideals in the relationship), in her trance/dream even though both of them died she has the most courage of forgetting about him (which the song sad day really ties about). Now, cut nearly to the end when they both died: they're both inflicted and damaged souls but she feels that it's much more better to cut him off from her life (hence her hand pulling lilith through his heart) but yet the hand that comes out of him is hers (he still can't exist without her because she is inside his heart).
It seems to cut back to reality in the end. Not sure if it's exactly a cliffhanger or something, but the way mirrored heart cuts sad day out near the end seemed like they were 2 people who had a fight and seem to want to break it off but they don't (taxi driver reference from the guy driving there, too). it seemed that even if they had a fight and she got drunk, the guy is still trying to find her and is concerned about her. so yeah, she wakes up from the dream/trance from her drunkenness and she sees the guy (probably) and with it she is somewhat going to be in tears (then the video ends).
^is it a reunion? was she hoping for him to come by and find her at least (hence why mirrored heart plays near the end)?
