    Would it not be better to apply the solution with something like a Qtip or tooth pick to control the area better, but very interesting JD.

    I would like to see you do a video on how you do your scouting and the things to say and not to say to a home/property owner I won't to do as you do but I get anxiety about knocking on doors so all the help I / we can get would help a lot..

    Great video JD, interesting and fun. I love science and metallurgy. I think I spelled that right. This is a great way to spend a cold winter day and to listen to Mama Cass' California Dreaming. Sorry, I'm an older viewer. Take care my friend.

    Great idea, only thing i dont like was that it left a clean mark. Try rubbing some lightly all over the coin for a shorter time so it matches a little closer.

    We used to do this back in the day, early 1960s, when I was in school. Used to find buffalos in pocket change still, and some had the date worn off. Didn't have Nic A Date back then, but we had a workable substitute: "borrowed" a vial full of hydrochloric acid from chem lab, and some manganese dioxide powder. Used a medicine dropper to apply a small drop of the acid to the date area, added a few grains of the manganese dioxide, a catalyst, watched the drop fizz for a few minutes, and voila! The date emerged.
    Don't recommend doing this nowadays. You can't eaily buy concentrated hydrochloric acid without authorization, though maybe hardware store muriatic acid might work. Manganese dioxide is readily available. Much more advisable to use Nic A Date, though it's not as dramatic as the acid.
    As for doing this for profit, I have my doubts. Acid-treated coins are only worth a tiny fraction of what the equivalent non-treated coins are. You can't get them certified or slabbed. But it is a fun hobby, and I just bought a roll of no-date nickels, a bottle of Nic-A-Date, and an album. This will give me hours of fun.

  • @LarsonFamilyFarm-LLC
    @LarsonFamilyFarm-LLC 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very interesting video JD....learned a lot. I think i'd use a technique where i tape up "a rectangular dam" around the date and use a tooth pick to fill the acid in the dam...then i'd rinse it after a minute...and then keep repeating in increments of 30 seconds (rinse and repeat) until the date showed...in this manner the acid is controlled only on the date region and the acid will only take off as little metal as possible as needed....then the coin would only appear with the slightest acid damage

    • @JDsVarietyChannel
      @JDsVarietyChannel  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Accuracy Marked In theory that sounds good. But once you rinse it off and reapply the results is never as good. I've done it many times. The best method is to leave it on for roughly 5 minutes then leave it as-is. :)

    • @LarsonFamilyFarm-LLC
      @LarsonFamilyFarm-LLC 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm thinking a toothpick or a tiny 1 time use paint brush would work well for getting just enough on the date area. Cool video though. I've never seen that done before. Now what works on coppers?

  • @thevendordude

    Cool video! Yours is the first Ive seen using nic a date and the results seem pretty good. The only thing that I might do different is to see if you could put it in a syringe so you dont have as big of the blob. I agree with Drew that prices arent the greatest for these coins now but are definitely great for fillers.

    I watched a video a while back, where this guy used vinegar and peroxide. I don't know if you HAVE to freeze it. You freeze the vinegar for about half an hour, just till there is ice flakes in it and add the peroxide. No set amount of either. Then put in the buffalo and leave it till clean. I did this with two of them that had no seeable date on either. I can now see the date on both of them!

    Hey man great video, i was wondering if you have tried using a dropper from like a baby teething gel or even a small meat baster that looks like a syringe for more control with the acid. Also do you think that this would work on German coins? I live in Germany and there are some amazingly old housed that have been in families forever and coins abound.

  • @TreasureHuntingSWPA412
    @TreasureHuntingSWPA412 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've never tried this but I think I would try using scotch tape to square off the date so that it was the only part exposed to the acid. Even some kind of wax may work.

      Right..give or take..don't add water...already enough in the vinegar...save solution in freezer for next time cleanings... just guess and add vin or hyg.peroxide as you wish...i use baking soda..little by little at times. do not put any oils on copper coins but for forehead oil. Dry copper coins usually just cleaned off with a toothpick (no water or soap and leave dirt in the valleys around features) and then rubbed with forehead oil to look the best and show off detail.
