    I’m so glad you mentioned that people often get hired who don’t have 100% of the qualifications listed on the job description! I recently read a statistic that said men will apply for jobs if they meet 65% of the qualifications, whereas women feel they need 100# in order to apply. The job description is for the employer’s “dream” candidate, but if you are learning and eager to learn, that enthusiasm can get you the job!

    I watched you videos. First thing was "Tell me about yourself".
    I told him what I'm doing now, my last job (Related) and my past experience in Manufacturing and Assembly.
    I also told him I have a couple of hobbies, Making Wine and Playing Bass. After that it became a conversation. He did explain what I would be doing and how my trainer would be with me. I got the job!
    Just waiting on a start date.
    Oh, he did ask me if I had questions.
    I said, I watched these TH-cam videos and was told to ask questions. I said, "Ready?". He started laughing and said. "Go ahead" So I asked, he answered. Again, I got the job, waiting on a start date.
    Thanks!

    I disagree with saying "I don't know" - depending on the type of interview that you're in.
    I am part of the Technical Interview to become a Unity software developer at my current job. (I am not a Hiring Manager. I am also a developer, and candidates basically have to pass a round of resume/test/interview with people like myself who will know whether or not they are bs'ing their resume/skills/knowledge)
    If we are interviewing a Mid or Senior level candidate: yea, we EXPECT you to know the answers to the questions we are asking. At least 85%-90% for Mid, and 100% for Senior.
    But for Entry level devs, we do NOT expect you to know all the answers to the technical questions. You're allowed to miss a few.
    Essentially we ask a series of beginner questions that we do expect Entry's to know, and allow them leniency to miss 1 or 2 of those questions.
    And then we ask them some intermediate questions to see what their skill level actually is (some people are Junior/Entry on paper, but might actually be closer to Mid in skill/knowledge level)
    But the biggest take-a-way is, for these technical interviews: if you dont know the answer to a question, at least SHOW them that you are eager to learn.
    Ask them to repeat the question so you can write it down and learn more about that subject.
    If you have to write down 90% of the questions... you probably won't get the job.
    But you WILL get the experience and some additional knowledge to help you grow your current skill level.

    Aside from the obvious, we basically can't be 100% honest with companies.. Most of us actually work for $$.. not because we actually enjoy going to work. Too bad we can't skip the bullshit and get to the point.

      that just means you couldn't find someone that already knew the ropes.

    Another tip I would give is the opposite of babbling. Don't give single word (Yes. No.) answers. I remember interviewing some did this and it was awkward. I'm waiting for them to elaborate and all I hear are crickets. I had to keep asking them to elaborate. Needless to say, that was the fastest interview I ever conducted.🥴
    Also, sometimes it's hard to not ask a recruiter what role are they calling about when they contact you months after applying for a position. I remember receiving a call for an interview 5 MONTHS after I had applied for the job. I had just had surgery two days prior and was literally laying in a hospital bed when I got the call. So yes, I definitely struggled remembering what job I had applied for. Didn't remember applying for it, but still ended up getting the job!😉

  • @kevinwestrom4775
    @kevinwestrom4775 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    The problem is at times, many hiring managers won't even consider you at all, if you don't already have 3-5 years of experience doing that very task/set of tasks, and that's it.. if you don't have that level of experience in the skill(s) already, you're done, and they'll be moving on to other candidates that may have that level of skill in those tasks instead.

    I interviewed today with a highly reputable legal foundation. The HR recruiter talked about salary and benefits first. She needed to know if the package offered would be acceptable. If not, then no need to proceed further and waste each other’s time.

    It has happened to me multiple times that I walk in to the interview and they tell me the role they are interviewing me for is not the one I applied for. I think "what role is this for" is a totally valid question and doesn't reflect the interviewee not knowing what they applied for, but is simply checking in with the interviewer to make sure they're on the same page.

    • @SuprousOxide
      @SuprousOxide 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Most job descriptions aren't very specific, beyond necessary skills (which are probably inflated), so it's perfectly acceptable to ask what the job actually is.
      Reaching out to people in the company is a ridiculous suggestion. Unless the company is small, what a particular job title means is going to vary tremendously across teams within the company. And if the company is small, you probably don't know anyone there. (If the company is large, you STILL probably don't know anyone there...)

    Great video! The problem with the money situation is that the position may pay well below what you can afford. People have bills to pay and even if they love the job and company they can’t take it because it’s unrealistic. I find that waiting until negotiations wastes so much time and energy on both sides. It would be great if more companies were transparent on having at least a salary range.

    Completely disagree with you on the remote benefit take. I did that and told them the #1 reason I am looking to work for a new company was my current company is forcing us back into the office and the fact I got hired by that company says you should take everything you say with a massive grain of salt. There also isn't millions of jobs that are remote that suit your experience, a seasoned and intelligent recruiter will understand this and know that you picked them because the job matches your skillset and experience/education.

    I had an interview last week with a company. I applied for a help desk job(IT), but they noticed that I have software development skillets as well. They hammered me more on that. They mentioned that they have a software development position. Is there a reason why they'd do that? Is it because they thought I'd be a better fit for that position? I did make it clear that I am not interested in development. My heart is in IT. That may have very well cost me the interview(it was last week), but I wanted to be upfront.

    Regards compensation, I don’t want to be rude to the recruiter when they ask how much I am looking for. So, I tell them what I currently make plus 5k, include the benefits they give, and say, “so, I’m going to need beyond that to leave this position.”
    Also, for the “do you have any questions” point. I always ask: could you give me a quick summary of what the day to day is like for the [job title]? Then as they describe it, I tell them all the reasons why I fit that perfectly. It helps me, helps them, and manages the awkwardness.

    For job descriptions, I've seen plenty of job descriptions for highly technical positions that only list x,y, & z, but the job actually entails job responsibilities & skills for tasks A - K,... which the job hiring managers ask about & not just sticking to x, y, & z.. The point being that sometimes the person who puts in the job description is someone completely unfamiliar with the role, vs someone who is familiar with it. Or another one: The job description saying it's an entry-level role with entry-level pay, yet requiring intermediate to very advanced level certifications only a senior-level person in the job would have.

    Don't ask what job "Which role is this for?" is very dependent on the role you applied to. In my case I applied to a General Software Engineer role at a company. Which covered everything from a L1 to a L6. Since I had a lot of experience as a Software QA Engineer but no experience in Software Engineering I assumed that I was shooting for the L1 position. I was told that they were looking to cover L2-L5 but would not tell me exactly what position I was interviewing for. I ended up not getting a position because they felt I didn't have a good enough grasp of the coding language I was using for the technical interview. Which isn't the case. However, one of the requirements of the interview was to walk them through my thought process when writing the code. That is difficult to do and I compare it to asking a musician or author being asked to explain their composition as they are writing it.

    When companies ask you "Why do you want to work here?" they're just looking to see if you were willing to jump through stupid hoops and pretend that you want to work for THEIR company in particular. Which is a joke. You don't. And if the interviewer was honest, they would admit they know that. They would admit you probably have more interviews with other companies scheduled next week.
    Really it's the interviewee who should be asking, 'Why SHOULD I want to work here?"

And I had bought certificates but not bragged just showed mid interview I had to take a professionalism class in college so that also helped. So now I get to work on time majority of the time the only time is when my bike catches a flat. And most of the time I beat one of the opening managers to work I hate to be late. I interviewed for an internal management position but I applied at midnight, I was offered an interview at one and the interview was 4 hours later, so literally I had 2 hours to prepare for this interview via zoom, it was an hour and a half and I forgot to ask questions 😭 I had one question only and I think because of this I won’t get it, we will see 😬

    I disagree with the I don't know bit. I can perhaps understand trying to thrill the interviewer but in my experience, if there's a question that I don't readily have the answer to for one reason or another I'm going to tell them I don't know and can reach out with an answer later. Instead of babbling which is what people do in order to not say I don't know.

    • @notfunnydidntlaugh8621
      @notfunnydidntlaugh8621 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They didn't answer the question directly. That would be what should you do during the interview if you are asked something you don't know. Instead they gave answers for what you should have done before the interview so that you don't say I don't know.

    Disagree on compensation, it should be in the job description or told to us on the first call so we don’t waste our time . Sure you can negotiate your salary but if it is 20k less then you made in your previous role then you would still get a new job making less. Don’t listen to these recruiters telling you not to talk about compensation and having them manipulate and gas light you. I would advise to speak with the recruiter about your skills and goals but also ask about salary on first call so you don’t waste each other’s time. I always do it and have gotten the job every time.

    The compensation take is pretty privileged. Like I get what you are trying to say; don’t focus solely on money. See, the problem with not mentioning compensation is there is a certain amount of money I need to live. If the job doesn’t meet that amount, I literally cannot afford to take the job. My apartment will kick me out if I can’t pay them, even if I tell them I got a super cool new job that isn’t about the money.
    I’m sorry, but it’s a waste of my time and the interviewer’s time to entertain opportunities I can’t take. I don’t even apply to jobs that don’t offer a salary range. It’s disrespectful and workers have realized they don’t have to play games anymore.

    Guessing that none of you have ever interviewed/recruited in Indian market. Recruiters do not look for the best candidate, they try to nail down the least suitable candidate to find their best candidate. And money is the first question and they'll grill down till the candidate gives the number.

    Only thing everyone looking for a job should know: Approach potential employers as a partner or sales person looking to add value to the company rather than a desperate person looking for a salary. Stop looking at employers as your bosses and look at them as your partners.

    What about the interviewer asking you questions you don't understand, I'll try to get clarity and will answer the best I can but my last interview I was given feedback that I didn't answer the question even though I am sure that I tried to but this has happened to me before so I am lost. I know I have also babbled in the past which I put down to nerves and anxiety when I have perceived an attack. No wonder people are embracing side hustle as interviews are getting worse over time!

    I disagree on half of the 10 reasons!! I've been in the working world for 25 years and I will bring up whatever I feel will benefit me! I keep my answers 1-3 minutes long! If a hiring manager really wants to hire you, you will get hired even if you "f-up" on one, two or three of these by mentioning them during the interviews!!

    With respect, Your giving bad advice for states that have pay transparency laws that make it illegal for recruiters to ask what the expected rate is when it should be in the job description by these laws; many states also make it illegal for recruiters to ask about past or current compensation as well.
    As a result, its neve ok for a recruiter or hiring manager to ask about the rate like that, and its a red flag if they do.

    Theres no reason not to talk about compensation up front. Why waste either persons time? If you cannot afford it, no wasted time, if employee doesn't like your ceiling, no wasted time. I'm not doing 3 rounds of interviews to say no because of compensation near the end. Terrible advice.
