- Livestock feeds remain the biggest headache for many farmers, owing to their cost. This has led farmers to seek alternatives which are affordable and easily available. Azolla is one such plant offering that alternative, thanks to its high protein content. Farmers in Nyeri are warming up to this crop which is today proving sustainable.
It's nice to see new news about this. Wolffia Globosa, is a strain of this stuff, which is wonderful for human consumption too. It only needs 4" of water to grow in, so a vertical shelf farm is very doable in a small indoor space. There are videos on TH-cam of Duckweed Farms. I'm pretty sure Azolla is food too, just boil it before consumption.
Though seemingly similar, duckweed and Azolla are actually two different and distinct plants.
