Child abuse cases in India have seen a significant rise in recent years, highlighting a disturbing trend. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), India reported approximately 162,000 cases of child abuse in 2022, showing an 8.7% increase from the previous year. Sexual abuse is a predominant concern, with nearly one-third of cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Additionally, kidnapping, abduction, and sexual offenses form the bulk of reported crimes against children. Data shows a strong gender bias, with adolescent girls often being the primary victims. States like Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh account for nearly half of these cases.
The surge in reported incidents is partly attributed to increased public awareness and better reporting mechanisms, though underreporting remains a problem, especially in rural areas due to social stigma.
