It seems like the biggest affront to the house was removing all the mantel pieces. Sweet couple but they were totally unprepared to take on a renovation. Losing the mantels takes away all the charm. I’m surprised the council didn’t react to that. I guess they didn’t know! Oast house however is a gem. Bravo! I would love to live there.
I don't get the grade 2 listing issues. The Conservation Agency is doing nothing to restore or maintain these buildings, they're just letting them fall down . Any improvements that a buyer does is better than letting it fall into ruin. So, why make it so difficult on the buyer?
This is so true! One would think the conservation officers/dept would do as much as they could to make life easier for the people who are willing to improve places like this. It is sad to see how they become the cause of the downfall.
Yes England is losing so much of its history because conservation officers wont allow the buildings to be renovated. I live in a building which has some parts which are medieval in the basement, some bits like the outhouse which is Georgian and some parts which are Victorian. My house is still here because people kept living in it and maintaining/rebuilding it, thats how you maintain history.
Conservation is great when it's NOT EXTREME. When it's asinine (as I find in it in THESE 2 instances), then it's a case of The Tail Wagging The Dog. The law should be that the oven and the press be PRESERVED, but why not find a place that can actually USE them? Why should they be forced upon people that are trying to preserve a house but for whom these 'appliances' are useless?? It makes no sense. It is laziness on the part of the Preservation Society that they are ONLY in charge of laying down the law, but there are no measures taken for the re-distribution of these fantastic appendages of history.
@@inesolujic2534 You must have found it strange that someone called Karen was on the receiving end of a power-hungry curmudgeon's strictures. And maybe even stranger that another Karen gasped on hearing that the couple were forced to retain rotting wood. Such regulations are insane.
The only problem with Master in the roundel is when the wind blows the sail on the top off the roof rotates on a metal ring making a grinding sound all night but you have to live somewhere i guess plus single wall brick work not cavity wall construction .

This show ran for years and years to the point where some papers even called her the Beeny. She has 4 children and had them during the course of this long running series. It was on the air for almost a decade.
@@cappsginny699 You cannot, you just think that you can if you believe the people who tell you that they are selling you some. It's a win win, those who sell 'taste' make money and those who buy 'acquire' it and revel in the knowledge that they have 'good taste'.
@@cappsginny699 Good question. But seriously... if THEY (anyone) love their purple, then that is all that matters. We all resonate with different colours. I love what my sister calls "puke green" (a sort of olive). We have different skin tones and she looks wonderful in blues, pinks, aquas, purples ... NONE of which do I wear. My wardrobe is all earth tones, mustard, orange, red, brown and all the greens with yellow in them. It is ALL valid.
i find the conservation demands to be absolutly idiotic. If ppl would stop buying those places, the whole damn thing would deteriorate and they conservationists would be left with dilapidated houses but oh boy, with those damn presses or ovens still standing smack in the middle of the ruins.
@nova00boss I'm actually very PRO-conservation and think it's important to not let history be lost. However, in many cases, the time that's wasted (and the money it costs) waiting for permits, being refused, applying AGAIN, dissuades many people from even trying with listed buildings and the result is that many of these places are then lost AS A RESULT of the conservation officers, rather than working WITH the people who are trying to renovate, work AGAINST them. Not to whitewash them. It's just the same-old-same-old; People in positions of power often abuse that power. On the other side, people who don't have the money to PROPERLY renovate, should go into a different business.
Beeny's suggestions can be very anti-historical-preservation and to suggest that modern but seriously ugly staircase for the Oast house makes me wonder if certain products she recommends are endorsed!!
The Oast house is fab, so well done and executing Sarah’s idea of the upside-down house.

I love this show. This is the only way I can watch it. Thank you so much.
At least both couples in this episode are open-minded about Sarah's suggestions. You can't say that about most of the people in other episodes.
So true.
Watching episodes out of order, I saw people commenting on season 9 episodes about "the bread oven"...now I see what everyone is talking about...
I wouldn’t have covered up the oven. I would’ve had it as a feature
Definitely

Unbelievable that they can't remove rotting beams
Seriously. Reminds me of power hungry Karens running HOAs. Except this is some power hungry old curmudgeon named Leland.

Listed buildings are a nightmare structurally and financially. My sis learnt that at a cost.
Hurt they didn’t buy parking space for that huge house.
Those ignorant criminals should be jailed for stripping a listed building without even bothering to ask for permission. Barbarian vandals.
I would have spent the money on the parking.
Thank you alot

For the industrial building it would have been better to put the kitchen-diner upstairs next to the living room!!!
Grade 2 listings are so annoying! Who gives a flying fiddle what someone does inside their house.
That is one odd bird ?
This is off subject...but is she ALWAYS pregnant? Seems like it.

I thought so too and even had to google the number of children she had.😄

The best job in the UK by the looks of it is builder.
Some of these people should invest some of their money in buying some good taste!
I know. Have you noticed the crazy use of purple in lots of British houses? I simply shriek when I see it.
And where does one buy 'some' good taste, pray tell?

I was thinking the samething
I'd be so tempted to take the enormous oven (or press) over to the house of the conservation officers and bolt it to their from porch.

Conservation rules should only apply to the outside of the house. Who gives a fiddle what happens inside
Its a shame they had to keep the ugly press in the oasthouse, its so beautiful apart from that one part.
🙁
Is this property ladder "The Dickhead" series ? great watching it but my God !, not even amature DIY
Lol @ david smith but thats true… is she always pregnant? Lol
