    I discovered Kiyo*Sen through my interest in Senri Kawaguchi's drumming. I've played drums for 42 years and I am amazed at the way Senri combines percussive complexity and musical taste. This is now one of my favorite groups! What a treat to hear their complex compositions of rich chord progressions and complex time! Bravo!

      Yeah, some solid Awake vibes to start out here. I really like where they take the song, too, but it's cool to hear something that evokes that DT sound (whether by design or not) since that's not the era you ever hear imitated by modern prog metal bands.

      David Christopher Nah! Have you heard Larnel?? I know you have but I’m just making a point. She’s doesn’t play with space well at all and her ability to lay back and sit in the pocket and groove is a huge hole in her game. Her grooves are horrible! Can you honestly see Senri doing something like this??? No way! th-cam.com/video/hD7qtKKe7_8/w-d-xo.html

    • @dchristo10
      @dchristo10 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@teddys3558 Of course she could do that. There's nothing in that video that's beyond her capabilities. The reason I'd like to see her with Snarky Puppy is to see her do exactly that. Hell, I wish Prince were still alive so she could work with him. There is nothing she can't do. She just needs the right environment.

    • @teddys3558
      @teddys3558 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Christopher OOOHHHH Please!!! Show me one of her videos where she plays anything remotely close to approaching anything like that. She’s so limited and is only good at playing fast double bassie type stuff. She has zero concept of funk and groove. She sucks at that. Dream Theatre and Rush type stuff is perfect for her.

    • @dchristo10
      @dchristo10 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@teddys3558 That she comes from a different background in music doesn't make her less capable. FWIW, When Chris Coleman couldn't make his gig with Eric Marienthal, they asked Senri to fill in. She plays on everything from video game music to Ryo Kunihiko, to jazz with the Tokyo Blue note jazz club band. There is nothing she can't do, given the opportunity.

      I think that her make-up is well done. It brings out her beauty. It is logical that she be made up like the pianist otherwise the visual impact will draw attention to her school girl look as compared to the lady pianist. It would be too distracting and unprofessional.

    • @mjnyc8655
      @mjnyc8655 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@duprattcarol Makeup doesn't bring out beauty in this case, rather it conceals.. Makeup is usually used to conceal undesirable facial features for those who have the latter. Ms. Kawaguchi has a flawless face and it is better left that way. But, de gustibus non disputandum est -- so I can't truly say that you are wrong.

    • @duprattcarol
      @duprattcarol 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mjnyc8655 Make up can do both , conceal or highlight. In Senri's case, it highlights her features. I notice that she only chooses to make up for concert posters and the Kiyo*Sens publicity videos but goes on stage as she is. So she probably does not like to make up at all. Notice that in the video, both women are made up and wear the same materials adapted to their individual tastes.

    So immensely talented musicians.... well shot... well lit.. but miming? - No mics... no IEMs.... why bother doing this?

    • @dacramac3487
      @dacramac3487 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why not? It is not as if this is how they do their concerts. It is a video, set up so that any microphones are not in the way. The leads are very clearly coming out of Kiyomi Otaka's keyboards.

    • @SpikeAllibone
      @SpikeAllibone 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dacramac3487 It's interesting isn't it!? - This video is a real head scratcher to me. Your question 'why not?' is of course valid. Why not indeed. There's no reason why not - I'm sure this all exists for very good reason.
      But, I'm in the show industry for a living and I work with the music industry - and have done for 30 years.... so when something like this crops up, I'm always interested to see why things have been done in an unusual way. The drum kit doesn't appear to have been deadened - and she's hitting nearly every nuanced beat. So those sounds would be very live in the room during the record which would have clashed with whatever Kiyomi is listening to land her performance... like is there a click track present? - Are they both hearing the pre-record version over the top?
      Mics in the space wouldn't have detracted from the video in my opinion - and so I don't believe that having the mics removed for visual aesthetic would have been the driver here... but perhaps you're right.. can't decide from seeing this as is. I think they genuinely wanted to mime to a pre-recorded track rather than filming a live performance.
      Noted that there are cables coming out of the keyboard set up, and so you are of course right again.... but why mime the drums and then record the keys live over the top in a video? - I'm sure there are reasons, but I couldn't guess them watching this. I have done countless shows in my career where talented musicians have mimed on stage for a whole variety of reasons - and I normally know what those reasons are.... on this occasion, I'm just not so sure!
      Those of us who are discerning in the process of music, video and stage performance (as well as what it takes to record drums in a live set up) will always notice things like this, which is why some mime acts go to great lengths to hide what they're up to on stage when it comes to pre-records. This video doesn't sit in a category that I fully understand since some effort has been made to hide the mime element and then no effort at all has been afforded to the drum kit and performance. I'm so happy to be wrong! - But right now, I just don't get it.
      If they wanted to mime to something they didn't want to re-record on set then I would have assumed they would have made the effort to hide it better considering the lengths they went to elsewhere in the production.
