I got my dad to buy the Nokia 800 tough ( as a replacement for his 2004 Nokia phone that still works! But 2g and 3g was no longer being supported here) and its a really good phone, its just pretty old already and not future proof, i find the specs to be a bit low, youtube lags at 480p but i hope they make a successor to the Nokia 800 tough, with better specs, i would definitely get it.

It's amazing how dependent we have become on apps and how downgrading to a simpler phone that can't access them/use them as conveniently can disrupt our daily lives.
I got my new flip phone today, it was 39 euros second hand, box open, barely used.
My friend asked me: "Are you sure you want to do this? This is a big decision"
And I'm like, bro, I'm downgrading to a flip phone, not joining a monastic order (I've thought of doing that as well).

That's why it's especially cool to see people flock to dumbphones again. It's never typically a large investment to try it out (I mean, if you have any relatives that are at the very least 30 years old, they'd probably have one lying around that they'd give to you, haha. I mean, I'm barely 20 and I've accrued two sets of T9-keypad phones in the early 2010's as school phones) and it's never tough to just go back to a smartphone (or to try another separate solution entirely) if you realize that the dumbphone makes too much of a compromise. If it doesn't work out, it's easy to come back. If it works out, it'll literally change your life.

I feel the exact same, addiction is not the only reason I don't like using a smartphone. I don't like using one even for everyday things, like calls and text, or for utilities. It doesn't look like a phone, it is just a boring black rectangle and frankly to me it looks like an entertainment/consumption device. Let's be real here, what do we use our phones the most for? 5% of it, yes, that is calls and texts, and maybe calendar or notes, but the other 95% is entertainment and consumption of media.

    • @hamingnu6610
      @hamingnu6610 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Definitely. It's hard to capture that feeling, but using the description "energy-sucking" or as an "addiction" really gets it right. We keep using it, we keep justifying our usage for it (and it doesn't help that most systems that revolve around middle-to-upper class lifestyles in middle to high-income countries are turning to total smartphone dependency), yet a lot of us feel lethargic after having used it. It's like if we went back to the 1920s and saw -co**aine- being shoved down our throats every morning like some sort of multivitamin (exaggeration, but nonetheless you get the point).

@@theliopleurodonthat's the biggest problem with dumbphones, they simply cannot replace smartphones. I've seen Kai Os phones costing slightly more than android go phones and due to their terrible battery life, dumb phones take an L on this one.
On the most basic smartphone, you get.
      1. Screenshot and Screen recording with high quality internal sound
      2. Massive on board storage from 32gb to 256 gb expandable with micro SD card
      3. Both micro USB and USB C support OTG
      4. Wider screen
      5. Notification shade with easy controls
      6. Massive internal battery
      7. Better connectivity
      8. Nearby share
Feature phones are simply unusable in 2023, unless you use both smartphones and feature phones

The thing about getting sucked in as soon as you look at your phone is so true. I open my phone to look at a text, but then sometimes end up looking at the snaps people sent me, or googling something, or the text I looked at turns into a 30min conversation. This doesn't happen always but when it does it feels like such a time waster. I also notice that whenever I see I got a text I really feel a need to look at it, and reply immediately which can sometimes get me out of the zone when studying.

  • @MandrakeDCR

I ended up going with the CAT s22 Flip. It's not an actual dumb phone, but it's an old-style flip phone. It runs Android, touch screen, I can use all my apps for work if needed in a crunch, but the screen is too small to doom-scroll, trying to use a keyboard on the screen, even with swype is almost impossible, using a T9 keyboard works great for text messaging and notes, but not great for browser logins and such.
So, I have found it to be an excellent bridge that has gotten me completely axed from my old, bad habbits. I can't believe how much time in the day it saves me. Even people at work - EVERYTHING is done through Teams (chat) and such. At first they were upset by it, then teased me about my 'old' phone, but now they just call me through the app if they really need me for something.
So, especially for someone who needs a phone for work as well, I think something like the s22 is a great 'bridge phone' if not a good solution.
Plus, if you're into chat and radio apps like Zello, EchoLink, Teamspeak, etc. - it has a PTT button built in :)

I stuck with Nokia 230. I think it's concentration issues similar to ADHD made me completely scared of having a phone with so many things to do on a whim.
And for the most part it's fine, since I'm not traveling much, and when I do I even prepared paper maps in the past to know where to go abroad.
But every year it get more and more difficult to have a phone without Android / IOS, especially working in tech. There's a huge push to 2-factor auth with apps not available on Nokias KaiOS (available only on Android / IOS), so that leaves me to be the only person in the company to expect sms to work in 2-factor auth.
I'm in Poland, so some of the dumb phones you've mentioned at the end are available here, but I would rather get CAT 22 flip, which obviously is not available in Europe at all. And it seems like CAT 22 flip is the only phone with Android, which is actively preventing you from using too much apps.

Not an issue with standard typing tho. Unfortunately still a flip phone, but the 2780 seems to be basically the same as the 2720 but with more features owing to it running a later version of KaiOS, obv this means WhatsApp is on the table. Here in Australia the 2780 isn't being sold, but if its available in the UK it might be worth a shot! If it's anything like the 2720 it should hold up over time.

I have it, you need to import it from China though (Ali) and it's still 100+ bucks. I choose it mainly because it is small and light, 100 gram. The screen is quite small but still useful to use gboard. It can do everything apart from NFC. But too small to use for addictive media consumption. It is far better than the Cat. I loved using my Nokia 2780 flip. I don’t recall ever having any issues with the keyboard. I’ve experimented with the Light Phone II and am experimenting with the Unihertz Jelly 2e as well. Even though the Jelly 2e is actually a fully functional smartphone, it’s extremely small and because of it’s size it naturally doesn’t make you want to overuse it. I got it for it’s GPS cause the other phones GPS are so-so and I haven’t gotten a seperate car GPS sustem just yet. I don’t have any unnecessary apps on the Jelly 2e, so in many ways to me it functions the same as a feature/dumbphone does. Only my bank app, a non-streaming music player app, and a basic journal app. That’s it. So far, I’m liking it more than the other two. And if I am not mistaken, I believe they sell an international version. Try checking that one out.
Also, have you seen Jose Brinones channel? He talks review of everything feature/dumbphone and even has a website where you can search up the perfect dumbphone for you by filtering your search based on features you are looking for in a phone. Because if all else fails, perhaps a phone that works best for you will eventually come out in the near future.

I am at the same point...I have/had a google pixel 4a which fell into a pot of boiling noodles(long story). So I had to search for a new one. It happend in March and I still cant find a new phone because the screens are way to big and if it has a small screen its way too expensive (I dont want to spend over 300€ on a phone).
So as I also wanted to reduce my screen time I did a loooot of research and the only possible "dumbphone" which isnt too dumb is the Jelly Star 3. The small screen will reduce the screen time enormusly and you can make this small smartphone through settings to a dumb phone with workjing WhatsApp, GoogleMaps and Spotify, Public transport app, banking.
BUT: I really like data secruity and Unihertz doesnt really update the system. So I feel kinda unsafe using such a phone...and it looks really ugly. But it has the best options for being a dumb phone and fitting in your pockets easily.
*my pixel 4a still works but I dont have a phone or internet connection...only Wifi. That made me realise that I feel much better being outside and not thinking or checking about new messages.
*It sucks is that I need a smartphone for mobile banking (paypal etc.) and public transport...so even if I use a dumbphone I still need a smartphone to do the other stuff.

I was afraid that writing will be hard but actually I can swipe (not only) and it is really accurate, fast and fun. I can even play games with friends (any game and with high quality with no lag). BUT the best part is that while I have fun playing games, watching reels or doing anything you want to do on a smart phone after like a 30min you just lose the desire to play some more and you can just go and do some productive stuff. I recommend this phone for everyone who want less screen time and cant use a dumb phone because you need some aps for work or learning.

With smartphones you get all sort of notifications that finding what's urgent is not obvious, so I was thinking of getting an old 2G phone like an Ericsson R320 or a Sony Z5, and keep whatsapp on the smartphone. Then I discovered a new minimal launcher, Niagara, that not only is minimal (at most a widget up top, and a vertical list of apps), but it has a function called "notification summary". You just decide the apps you don't want to see notifications from, it will hide them from the notification drawer but you'll still be able to see them on a menu on your homescreen. I need Android Auto, Spotify, Google Fit, convenient messaging apps, access to my universities apps (being able to access your uni's apps is insanely important and they're usually horrible and buggy enough without a crappy phone), etc. etc. etc.
My point is, self-control will always be a far better preventative measure, and is probably better for your development in the long run. I use a Samsung S21, with digital wellbeing monitoring for anything over 30 minutes a day on social media, and a sleep mode that turns on DND at 11pm. It's okay to fumble with it too, I still struggle, it's REALLY hard to detech your life, especially as someone raised in the digital age, but I don't think the solution is dumb phones.
You're enthusiasm is admirable, I was in the same boat a couple years ago, but addressing the much larger problem of why you feel you NEED a dumb phone was, at least for me, a far more productive use of my time. I hope this helps!

I went on a way to dumbyfi my phone. I made text size smaller and colors dull. I disabled notifications and such. It made my experience really boring without work related apps, navigation and such. I also have a flip phone case, so I can actually cover screen when I am done with it. So, basically treat ur phone like a pda

It's really just a huge marketplace.
I also really hate using my smartphone, I feel like its using me more than I'm using it.

Just the fact you cant decide which feature (dumb) phone you wanna buy to help you get off your smartphone, shows you really do need some assistance and there is no shame in seeking help. Smartphone addiction is just like any other addiction, you will not get off of it on your own, youre just throwing money and time away trying to find another phone to get away from your normal phone.

Cat s22 is available from amazon UK. Mine shows up tomorrow... Another option for something with a decent keyboard/pad is a unihertz titan pocket. Basically a blackberry q10 clone in a rugged formfactor. The only reason I didn't stick with it was because the muscle memory from my blackberry 10 days meant I couldn't get used to the keyboard modifiers (shift, delete, tab) being on the top row.

I think you specifically need to search for the term feature phone.
Those are devices in a more traditional mobile phone factor that still feature modern tech like touchscreens and third party apps. The underlying system is often either KaiOS or Android.
However, those devices are more popular in asia as far as I know.
There is also an effort by peple to run Linux on some older phones in that form factor so they can be used for some modern things.

I've been buying phones from around 2009/2010 and I've been loving them, apart from the fact that ye olde phone WAP internet mostly doesn't work anymore due to security certificates and such. But the form factors are amazing, and they feel very premium compared to the new feature phones, that pretty much all look and feel cheap and not very resilient. I'd love a premium dumb-smart hybrid, that works as a phone, has physical interface like a side-slide KB or up-slide numpad, and some basics like Whatsapp, Spotify and maybe Waze.

Authenticators and stuff make it hard for me to have a dumb phone. So, I went into dealing with Linux phones and having a custom Windows platform phone. Which is working quite well however you have to develop some of the apps yourself. It's not for everyone. I find myself in the enthusiast space. Not for everyone but I got the form factor I like. While hard it's not as hard as you think. There are also prebuilt stuff like PINE and stuff.

a few suggestions that should create a barrier on a smartphone:
    - have you tried uninstalling the harmful Apps, as you seem to know exactly what you want
    - you could also try to control your "Screen time". in Android the system measures it daily in Settings > Apps > Screen time
    - you could also disable notifications for the harmful Apps

This might be too late but worth a try. I have been using the Jelly 2 for about 6 months now. It is not a dumbphone but it is. This is due to its incredibly small 3inch screen. It has all the features of a regular smartphone but its size it what makes it dumb as event if I can download youtube, tiktok or instagram. Its so small that I have to fight myself to use it for more than 5 minutes. Also, the keyboard. It works fine. I hands are big enough to grab a volleyball with one hand but my fingers are slim, I have had no issue with typing on the phone. On a really boring day like waiting in line for something I spent max 30 minutes looking at the screen and the rest of the days about 10 minutes. The battery last me for 2 days on the use of just 10 minutes of screen time. It also has bluetooth so I can connect my earbuds and they work fine too. This phone is everything that I was looking for in a dumbphone. The price might fight you off though, but I was confident enough to keep this one and sell my old one and get some gains too.

The other is a good storage, big screen phone for social media and emails etc.
it is not perfect, but I now have the much needed choice of not scrolling through other apps, while I reply to texts and right after a call.

I've found that simply deleting most social media apps off of my phone was the easiest thing to do; there's really not a desire for me to re-download apps like reddit, twitter, etc.. I don't like mobile gaming, so I don't have to worry about those. Only social media I have on my phone is Facebook, which I admittedly still find myself boredom scrolling here and there, but I can't bring myself to delete Facebook because of access to the marketplace. My phone also doubles as a transceiver for a medical device I use, so downgrading to a dumb-phone isn't really an option for me.
