I "liked" Kamelot before Tommy, but I suddenly "LOVED" Kamelot with Tommy! What a great interview! I hate hearing him say he is such an average singer, because when I've seen him live my soul has literally left my body.
Tommy is so great, versatile and charismatic singer. It was a huge change after Roy Khan and he managed so well in Kamelot. And now everything is as it is. He was great in Ayreon too. So cheers from Finland and all the best!
I now love Seventh Wonder, but I first discovered Tommy through Kamelot. I really enjoyed Kamelot's album 'The Black Halo' when I was in high school, but I never ended up seeing them live with Roy. I love Roy's singing, so when I got a ticket to see Kamelot live for my first time in 2012, shortly after Tommy joined the band, I was willing to give him a chance, but was kind of bummed that I wouldn't get to see Roy. From the moment Tommy took the stage that night, he won me over. His stage presence, his enthusiasm, and his amazing voice were incredible that night. I left the venue feeling that I had seen an amazing show and that Kamelot had found an amazing storyteller in Tommy (Nightwish opened for Kamelot that night, it was one of Annette's last shows with the band, she was awesome, they were touring for Imaginarium, which is my favorite album of theirs, and suffice it to say both bands were phenomenal... so overall that was just an incredible concert). Then a few years after that show I discovered 'Mercy Falls' and yeah, Tommy has definitely become one of my favorite singers. It's good to see in this interview that he also is such a kind and genuine person. P.S.-My mom passed away in January 2019 and the night before she passed, I played her the 'Farewell Suite' of three songs from 'Tiara' (her name is Terri, so it seemed fitting somehow, and she and I enjoyed bands like Dream Theater as well as sci-fit movies together). I will always be grateful to Tommy that his heartfelt beautiful singing in those songs was something I was able to share during my mom's last night of her life. She and I loved listening to music together and she loved Tommy's voice too!
Parallels closely Floor Jansen's joining Nightwish: fans were dubious at first, but she won them over immediately. Both have great stage presence, personal charm, and of course world-class voices.
Your guests always seem to open up and tell amazing stories on the road to be a singer. Elizabeth, it is your charisma that make it happen. Amazing interviews, I really enjoy it a lot ❤️❤️❤️
Tommy is most certainly in my top 5 favorite singers of all time. I think wherever he goes it will be amazing, and I will follow. I discovered Seventh Wonder years ago when they put their first album out with Tommy as the lead vocalist. I was blown away and immediately bought every single album they've released from then. I was also a Kamelot fan and was blown away when I learned Tommy was going to be the new lead. Tough shoes to fill but he did it gracefully and flawlessly. And as a fellow introvert, I really enjoyed this interview! Haha.
I remember when I met Tommy. It was Kamelot's first show with him in Poland. Me and my friends waited outside the show building and he came out to us, shaked his hand with everyone and introduced himself to us. I was like "OMG what just happend! " The best think is that during the concert he recognized me and other girls ( we were right in front of the stage) and he came to me with the mic and asked me to count to three in polish. There is even a video so I have a proof that I didn't imagine that :)
I came across this interview because I first saw your reactions to Floor Jansen, then Ayreon, and I am a huge fan of Ayreon and Kamelot. I must praise your talent as an interviewer: you got the best from two totally different characters (Arjen A. Lucassen and Tommy Karevik). You nailed it! Thanks for making such excellent content!
As a Kamelot fan since the Fourth Legacy album, I was so afraid when it was announced that Roy Khan was leaving Kamelot. I thought they could never find a replacement that could fill his shoes. I was so wrong. Tommy is the best singer anyone could've hoped for. Not to disrespect Roy Khan (who is still a great singer), in any way but Kamelot with Tommy has become the greatest band in the world.
Some serious vocal science is going on here. This is the great thing about Elizabeth's chats they are not interviews. They are 2 people talking about vocals with questions going both ways ❤😅
Fantastic interview. Tommy has become one of my all-time favorite artists. And to see how humble he is just kicked him up to the #1 spot. I CANNOT WAIT until Seventh Wonder library gets back on Spotify/Apple Music, supposedly by the end of the month (Jan 2023)!!!
Wow, what a lovely guy...and completely badass without knowing he's badass...yeah, I am a rock star with 18" guns that was a firefighter, and I made my chops singing runs with Mariah Carey music, and I am completely comfortable with all of it...just awesome...
I appreciate Elizabeth's sensitivity and care in interviewing Tommy who's obviously not someone that is so comfortable talking about himself o. This allows him to share nuggets you might not have otherwise gotten from him. To the point about not listening to his voice while practicing or performing, I remember a tenor operatic Maestro on a Zoom seminar I attended saying that you don't focus on how your voice sounds to you to know if it's correct, but rather you focus on the proper execution of the technique. Let the technique be accurate and the sound will follow. Minimizing the sound in your ears would definitely help with that if you knew how to approach the technique properly.
Tommy is a gem, he seems like such a genuinely nice person. Also, he could sing the phone book on a solo acoustic record and I would buy it just to listen to him sing.
Met him in real life a couple of times together with kamelot and alissa white gluz(before she was in arch enemy)he really is a nice guy, super friendly to the fans and an amazing live performer!
@@spitfire656 Same! He's humble, and shockingly introverted considering how well he does in front of an audience. He might very been tired after the show in Dallas but still took the time to say hi and talk
What a humble human! Tommy is one of my favourite singers currently, he evokes nuanced emotion in his voice better than anyone. This was such a treat listening to this interview!
What an amazing interview with Tommy. And as a Chilean I'm proud how we as a crowd always sing along all Kamelot songs \m/ Hope you have a healthy and amazing time with your newborn (when it comes). Greetings from Chile (sorry for my poor English).
Aside from being an amazing singer and having one of the best voices ever in metal, Tommy Karevik is a really cool and down to earth guy. Love his work with Seventh Wonder and really enjoying his current run with Kamelot, he is one of my all time favourite singers. Fantastic interview.
Tommy is my favorite singer and this was amazing to hear. I've been taking singing lessons and practicing a ton for a while, and he is my main inspiration for singing, so it's crazy to hear he "dislikes" his own voice. And that while story about feeling trapped and the hemorrhages... Very enlightening. Professional singers definetly make it sound easy, and it's relieving to know that the gods do struggle too
I've been 20 minutes watching this, and came here to tell that I love this channel, the singers, and I'm waiting for the tea time interview with the vocal god Russell Allen. Their approach towards singing as storytelling are very similar.
The old saying is true : If you really really want to do something it will happen! Thanks Elizabeth and Kirk for making this interview possible and that you have never given up to get it.
As a person who is just starting to sing, it’s amazing to watch your interview style that organically devolves into people with different backgrounds enjoying talking shop. Thumbs up! I’m learning so much.
Great interview. Tommy is a lovely guy. I can't wait for the new Seventh Wonder and Kamelot album, and the idea there could be a solo album at some point is exciting too!
This was a truly enjoyable interview. I already really enjoyed Tommy as a musician and this added a level of respect. Can't wait to see Kamelot live again!
I love that Tommy focus so much on the emotions and the story telling in the music he is producing, because for me as a listener emotions are a really big part of picking out music to listen to.
Seventh Wonder street team assemble! We all know and clearly she does too how fantastic Seventh Wonder is, we need to see them tour successfully in North America!
I've seen Tommy with Kamelot live twice now and he's such a phenomenal singer. I'd actually heard him from Seventh Wonder first and he's one of the few singers that has brought me to tears with his songwriting. Truly a one of a kind voice and i'm so thankful for him sharing all of his work with us!
I'm only halfway through (I'll listen to the rest during tomorrow morning's workout), but I wanted to point out what I thought was a missed opportunity. Tommy cited James LaBrie one of his earliest metal influences, and then later on you got into the discussion of straw singing. Remember the interview with LaBrie and how the straw/water contraption was also such a big thing for him both in recovering his voice after the severe food poisoning incident and in maintaining his vocal health as he's aged. Anyway, loving this interview so far, I just wish you'd made that connection too and related James' story back to Tommy for his reaction.
This was such an interesting and great interview, Thank you! Tommy is super talented and a sweetheart, and I have been a fan of his since 2008 when Mercy Falls dropped and I discovered it. I felt those questions really poked at stuff of his past and really gave an insight into who Tommy is, so great job!
I saw Tommy with Kamelot live in St Louis last weekend. I would have never guessed he was an introvert. An absolute masterclass showman, he appeared very comfortable on stage and sounded identical live to his recorded works. During one song, he even lifted a small kid from the front row onto the stage with one arm WHILE SINGING and there were no grunts, strain, etc. The dude's an Olympian. He sang to him, the kids face lit up ear to ear and the bassist gave him his guitar pick mid-performance and switched to his fingers and had to go get another pick from the side. If anyone has a chance to see this band live, take it. It's truly an experience.
So nice of Tommy to mention Mike Mills. Indeed he has an incredible range, but he's also one of the best lyricists I know and an exceptional multi-instrumentalist :). Aand for the amount of talent he has he really doesn't get enough publicity. If you want to hear his own material, check out his 'band/comic artist duo' Toehider :). He's also in my top 3 for tea time interviews, along with Anneke van Giersbergen and Floor Jansen, but we're spoiled already with the past tea time interviews. These give insights that normally never happen with regular interviews. So thanks for what you have done already Elizabeth and good luck with the last part of your pregnancy :).
It wasn't until Ayreon that I really started appreciating Tommy's voice. (Arjen really shined a spotlight on an underrated singer there!) I love how you respectfully and patiently wait for him to find his words (conversational English when it's not your first language can be tough!) and only help when he really can't find them. A lot of times, trying to help can have the opposite effect, but not when speaking to you :) I also love how your tea time interviews are so long, it really provides the opportunity to delve deeper into things, making it fly by in a relative instant. I can't wait for the next interview with undoubtedly one more of my favourite vocalists, although I can imagine you wanting to focus some more on your child as you're nearing the end of your pregnancy and the start of your lives together. Wishing you and your family all the best!
Hearing someone as gifted as Tommy admit that he doesn't like the sound of his own voice gives me a lot of hope as I continue to practice singing. It reminds me of one of the (few good) things that David Mamet said: "If someone tells you that they enjoyed your performance, you have no right to tell them otherwise, regardless of how you feel about it."
Tommy is a voice's master, he's my idol and it's great to see him in his comfort zone here, despite he's very introvert. Great interview, Elizabeth treated him as a long time friend, there was a fantastic connection between them
Not me sobbing when I was listening to that part about introverts 🥲❤ I loved this interview, Tommy is along with Bruce Dickinson my favourite singer, so this was for me like a Christmas gift. Thank you, Elizabeth for this ❤
Great interview. I really like how he said he has learned from and absorbed some of Roy's style into his own. I want the tea time interview with Roy Khan now.
Iv seen Kamelot 2 live once with Roy Khan second time with Tommy and they couldnt have found a better fit vocaly honestly they have voices of pure silk.
7's song, Long Way Home is one of the greatest songs ever recorded. The end of the song sees Tommy singing with his sister and their voices blend like peanut butter and jelly. Amazing.
Great interview Elizabeth , giving us some insite into what makes Tommy tick . For a good looking rooster with an awesome song writing , singing ability and stage presence , he sure is a grounded humble soul , and much respect to him for that . 👍
I would love for you to cover some of Soilwork's music (melodic death metal) the lead singer, Björn Strid switches between rough and clean vocals and his clean vocals are amazing in my opinion!
Tommy!!! I love him so much as a singer, he is surely the best male singer in the world, and now I see that he is also a wonderful person! Thank you Elisabet for making this!
This was great. I didn't have an opportunity to attend a Kamelot show until they were doing their tour between Roy and Tommy, when Fabio Leon was the interim. The next time Kamelot was in Seattle was their first tour after Tommy had joined and they were opening for Nightwish, which also happened to be the show Nightwish introduced Floor Jansen as their interim vocalist (at the time). I remember leaving the show elated, thinking, "This feels right for both of them." I haven't missed a Kamelot show in Seattle since then and the one tour they couldn't get a Seattle stop on the bill I happened to be in London when they were playing later that year, so it all worked out. One thing that I'm finding really interesting is his aversion to his own voice, which is the complete opposite of the approach Yannis Popadopoulos detailed in his interview where he uses a small recorder and plays things back right away.
Thank you again for this interview Elizabeth. I've never seen Tommy so relaxed and open in an interview before, you're so good at getting the best out of people! And super happy to hear that he's giving serious thought to the solo album(s). I look forward to hearing the result.
My first time hearing Tommy live was from the front row at... Sweden Rock Festival 2014. Let me tell you, that straw certainly worked! I had seen Kamelot with Roy Khan before and Tommy felt like an improvement.
Probably my best interview ever on your channel. Tommy is a incredible and awesome singer, which I enjoy more in Seventh Wonder, but above all things Tommy has proven to be a real down-to-earth person. Great!
Thank you so much Elizabeth for this interview! I've Been a huge fan of Seventh Wonder and Tommy's voice for years now. Truly unique in the metal world.....one of my favorite voices in ANY genre. I KNEW he would be a humble, down to earth and genuinely wonderful guy! Congrat's on the baby as well!!

I can't believe I am just watching this. I want another two hours of talking technique from you two, and I also LOVE how Tommy talks about Kobra. It sounds like the two of them are perfect for each other, and supper sportive of each other, and I am so here for it. Also, Tommy and all of his band members need to listen to Debussy!
I would LOVE to. Unfortunately, these Tea Times last for 1 1/2 to 2 hours long, and I can't get Bruce for more than 30 minutes. Hoping that changes in the future!
Outstanding interview Elizabeth !!. Very relaxed, full of good questions, with a perfect sense of music composition and playing. And what can I say about Tommy. He is not only a huge singer, he also writes very well, he acts every lyric, but also he had to fit Roy´s shoes, and he did it perfectly. No one is Roy, but he kept that magic, with his own style. I raise my glass of wine for Kamelot, Seventh Wonder, Roy, and Tommy, and Elizabeth for sharing this amazing interview
Pretty cool to have Tommy on! Always like his voice. I learned about extroverts/introverts in University, and itt made so much sense to me. I played alot of music in front of people but I am very much an introvert, its nice to see that not all singers are extroverted

Anyway, as a long time kamelot/tommy fan, I still did not know anything about this amazing singer and frontman. What a treat. To hear things like came from pop (Mariah) and listening to things like SA (god bless that band), it just gives me a new take on his performance. And The stuff about things sounding so free, and Tommy himself feels trapped in his voice... I would never guess, coz his voice sounds so... Free! 🙂 Anyhow... Great interview, great video, love it, looking forward to hearing more (music, interviews, reactions)!
Thank you both for a wonderful interview - as Elizabeth mentioned, Tommy's vocals in Ayreon's "The Day That The World Breaks Down" left me in awe of his skill. That he was also a big Mariah Carey fan back in the day brought a smile to my face, as her duet of "Whenever You Call" with Brian McKnight was my wedding song 😁

My brother used to play in a band called Royal Jester with Tommy Johansson back in the day, it's so weird to see Tommy pop up everywhere now😂 Great musician though☺️
Great as always 👍🤘 one thing I would love though is if you could upload this interviews on Spotify too, so there's an audio only version that works without a turned on screen, then I could listen to it outside too, which would be just awesome

Hands down my favorite vocalist right here! His range is incredible and every project he works on is spotless!
This is so awesome! I've been a massive fan of Tommy for over 10 years now, and this is by far the best interview with him I've seen!
Wow, what a lovely guy...and completely badass without knowing he's badass...yeah, I am a rock star with 18" guns that was a firefighter, and I made my chops singing runs with Mariah Carey music, and I am completely comfortable with all of it...just awesome...
YEAAH MAN
I appreciate Elizabeth's sensitivity and care in interviewing Tommy who's obviously not someone that is so comfortable talking about himself o.
My favorite singer and favorite reactor all in one place. Can’t wait for this!
Tommy is a gem, he seems like such a genuinely nice person. Also, he could sing the phone book on a solo acoustic record and I would buy it just to listen to him sing.
He NEEDS to put out an acoustic record. SW bonus tracks, intro to the great escape, welcome home, veil of elysium
Met him in real life a couple of times together with kamelot and alissa white gluz(before she was in arch enemy)he really is a nice guy, super friendly to the fans and an amazing live performer!
@@spitfire656 not at all surprising, Alissa always seems very nice as well.
@@kylemiller2920 yes,my wife had a purse with new york on it,and alissa started chatting with my wife about how new york city was etc, nice people :)
Wow, such an incredibly humble and kind and lovely guy 😄
What an amazing interview with Tommy. And as a Chilean I'm proud how we as a crowd always sing along all Kamelot songs \m/
Hope you have a healthy and amazing time with your newborn (when it comes).
Greetings from Chile (sorry for my poor English).
I'm an English Grad, and your written English is just swell.
Lalo, your English is GREAT! Please don't apologize, especially when you have good things to say.
English is on point, friend 😎👍
Ok you interviewed the legend himself!!! He’s absolutely amazing! Now you have to do The Great Escape by Seventh Wonder!!!
Aside from being an amazing singer and having one of the best voices ever in metal, Tommy Karevik is a really cool and down to earth guy. Love his work with Seventh Wonder and really enjoying his current run with Kamelot, he is one of my all time favourite singers. Fantastic interview.
Kobra and the Lotus, his wife's band, is one of my favorites, she's fantastic
You need to react to Seventh Wonder - The Great Escape, the half an hour long title track!
Suggested that to amazing song
This! Definitely a need-to-listen song👌
The next interview on your list should now be Roy Khan.
I am sure that would be a an awesome interview.
Christ I miss him singing kamelot live, totally different to what I normally would want to hear but he's just stupid
Their approach towards singing as storytelling are very similar.
viva Chile mierda!!
How can one not be a fan of this guy? Great voice, great person, a thoughtful and cultured guy! Thanks, Elizabeth and thanks, Tommy!
The old saying is true : If you really really want to do something it will happen! Thanks Elizabeth and Kirk for making this interview possible
and that you have never given up to get it.
Thank You Elizabeth for this talk, Tommy is such a great guy, so humble, so simple, and one of the most beautiful voices in metal scene.
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is all I needed today 😍❤
It would be great to have an interview with Roy too.
If that happens, I will put both of them in autoplay the whole day.
@@dasRot2011 same
I am SO EXCITED FOR THIS ONE. I cannot wait. I am such a big Tommy fan, aaahhhhh!!!!
As a person who is just starting to sing, it’s amazing to watch your interview style that organically devolves into people with different backgrounds enjoying talking shop. Thumbs up! I’m learning so much.
I freaking KNEW he reminded me of Clay Aiken for some reason!! He has pop influences! I am living for this 😍😍
Great interview.
I feel his work with Seventh Wonder is some of the best music ever made. Good luck with the future music and life Tommy!
He's so humble despite being an amazing singer.
It wasn't until Ayreon that I really started appreciating Tommy's voice. (Arjen really shined a spotlight on an underrated singer there!)
I love how you respectfully and patiently wait for him to find his words (conversational English when it's not your first language can be tough!) and only help when he really can't find them. A lot of times, trying to help can have the opposite effect, but not when speaking to you :)
I also love how your tea time interviews are so long, it really provides the opportunity to delve deeper into things, making it fly by in a relative instant.
Thank you, Elizabeth for this ❤
My favorite performance from Tommy is his appearance in The Theory of Everything, by Ayreon. Amazing stuff.
How about his appearance on The Source?
He’s on that album too? Nice
@@metalmanny666 Yup. Plays the opposition leader who was against President Russel Allen’s decision to give all control to “The Frame”.
Tommy and Seventh Wonder are absolutely incredible!
7's song, Long Way Home is one of the greatest songs ever recorded. The end of the song sees Tommy singing with his sister and their voices blend like peanut butter and jelly. Amazing.
"in Chile once..."... YESSS OMG!!! 😍 we're SO loud and energetic here as an audience 😅
Superb interview - Tommy keep amaze me. Now, I need to go listen more to Seventh wonder too, Kamelot is already amongst my favourite bands.
Oh Wow this was such an awesome conversation, it was so good hearing how Tommy started and developed over the years.
Thank you again for this interview Elizabeth.
I've never seen Tommy so relaxed and open in an interview before, you're so good at getting the best out of people!
And super happy to hear that he's giving serious thought to the solo album(s). I look forward to hearing the result.
I was actually thinking recently that it would be so awesome if you interviewed Tommy, and you did!!!! I cannot wait for this one!
I was thinking it just a few day ago 😂
My first time hearing Tommy live was from the front row at... Sweden Rock Festival 2014. Let me tell you, that straw certainly worked!
I had seen Kamelot with Roy Khan before and Tommy felt like an improvement.
What an awesome guy! So humble.
I loved seeing this!! He's so cool! I've only seen Kamelot with him but he's great! It was also cool to hear his thoughts on joining the band
Thank you for this wonderful and insightful interview! It would be so lovely to hear your thoughts on Kobra's music from her band Kobra and the Lotus or even her new solo stuff. She has a stunning voice. An interview with her would be super awesome too! 🖤
Thank you for this! Tommy is one of my favorite singers and musical heroes, and he’s so humble for such an incredible talent.
Loved this, so interesting and Tommy seems like such a lovely man, thank you Elizabeth 🙏
im waiting a video interviewing Tobias Sammet from Avantasia 👀
Oh that would be a fun one!
@@TheCharismaticVoice there is a new Avantasia album on the way. It could be great timing!
Tommy is absolutely lovely! Thank you for bringing him to us!
You need to do this with Bruce Dickenson
Great interview as usual! I'm really looking forward to Seventh Wonders new album!!
Tommy you are awesome, you are a great singer and I discover that you are also a great human being
Pretty cool to have Tommy on! Always like his voice. I learned about extroverts/introverts in University, and itt made so much sense to me. I played alot of music in front of people but I am very much an introvert, its nice to see that not all singers are extroverted
What a wonderful night this turned out to be. I love Tommy and all his work, and of course I love Elizabeth 🙂 Your interviews are so down to earth and amazing in every way. Please keep them coming!
Nice! absolutely one of my favorite singers!
The song for anger on the testament album is the red river
I love that song so much
He said it was difficult to write about anger, yet they wrote that song so beautifully
Seventh wonder is such a great band
Much love from Nigeria!
So cool that he moved to Canada. I'm a Canadian to, be interesting to hear how our harsh climate effects his voice.
I thought Swedish and Canadian climate would be quite similar, maybe I’m wrong? I Haven’t visited Canada yet.
If you want another amazing Swedish singer named Tommy to interview, Mr Johansson would be fantastic. Best male highs I've ever heard and from everything I've seen he's a super humble and nice guy (just like Tommy Karevik)
My brother used to play in a band called Royal Jester with Tommy Johansson back in the day, it's so weird to see Tommy pop up everywhere now😂 Great musician though☺️
@@novajohansson3194 Is he as awesome of a general human being as he seems?
Great as always 👍🤘 one thing I would love though is if you could upload this interviews on Spotify too, so there's an audio only version that works without a turned on screen, then I could listen to it outside too, which would be just awesome
Tip for an interview is Jonah Nilsson from the band Dirty Loops. He is another fantastic swedish singer and musician that also seems like a really nice person!
One of my favorite artists ever
This was great to see such a candid down to earth conversation, and yes, buy the albums! Such a great message.
