Someone might try to swerve off the road if they think they are going too fast to stop before they hit what they previously couldn't see (because it had jumped into existence from a smear of color), thus hitting people on the sidewalk, stationary objects that could harm the vehicle's occupant, and so on.
It's a very irresponsible way of trying to scare people into being more careful. Harsh lessons can be good, but leaving illusions lying around like landmines to leap in front of the person moving a two-ton metal object while it is in motion at potentially high velocity is reckless and foolish.
The very real dangers that can be presented by faking an emergency situation (like an imminent car collision with this illusion) was highlighed in a United States federal court case which ruled that freedom of expression, as promised in the United States Constitution, does not apply when the form of expression can threaten the safety of others. As an example, the court stated that someone crying "Fire!" in a crowded building could cause a stampede. Since someone could be trampled to death, or fall down a staircase from trying to descend to quickly and break their neck, the person creating the false alarm would be guilty of a punishable crime.
