Ben was always planning to retire after a few fights in UFC, because he was already ready to retire when they brought him in. The only difference is we would have seen Askren vs Usman instead of Maia. If Askren lost to Usman (which would be probable), he would have still likely retired.
Same would have happened to Leon Edwards if he didn't get that Hail Mary kick. He was dominated in that fight until that moment, and probably would not have gotten another title shot anytime soon.
