    You aren't wrong about Super Paper Mario. It's an interesting game that the people who champion it blow it way, way, WAY out of proportion

    • @fawfulthegreat64
      @fawfulthegreat64 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I think its haters blow it way further out of proportion. I was actually really intently listening to what he had to say about SPM and right as I was walking to get a drink convinced this video would be watchable the tone shifted in basically an instant and suddenly he's ripping it apart for the very design decisions he explained the point of so well in the first half. Every SPM hater makes the same tired nonexistent points.
      "Everything it does well is moot because it's not FUN" (then how did I have fun with it? what are you suggesting about the massive passionate fanbase of this game? Do you think the concept of fun is foreign to us?)
      "gee I sure love running for 5 minutes" (oh you mean the one that the game doesn't force you to do except on the first playthrough as long as you write down/remember the code? Or the one that's designed to sink in the scale of the destruction of a world as you walk through a wasteland as eerie music plays? The former is a funny gag the first time and if you do it every playthrough that's on you not the game, and the latter is literally a plot device that works very well in the context of the story. SPM is a game that is disingenuous to disregard any story context in how you judge the gameplay)
      "how DARE they make a platformer with TTYD's physics engine" (oh I'm sorry I forgot where the level design ever got so precise that that ever becomes an issue... I sure never had that thought cross my mind when playing it as a kid, probably because I was too immersed in this bizarre abstract new world and invested in the story. Also, I got used to this game's controls without a single complaint and whenever I screw up in this game I can see why it was due to my own error. I'm sorry your muscle memory from other Mario games didn't translate 1:1 but that's a disingenuous thing to hold against this game. This isn't a mainline 2D Mario. If it was it would still clear because those games have fuck all in terms of a story but that's a topic for another day)
      "oh no there's backtracking" (uh yeah because that's how a LOT of RPGs work and this game IS still an RPG despite also being a platformer, it was always gonna use some design philosophies from the previous PM games like TTYD, which also had a lot of backtracking, which I also think haters blow out of proportion btw)
      I won't deny the game has issues and I'd love to see a remake that fixes them. But I'll take these issues a thousand times over a game where all you meet are regular Toads, traditional Koopa Troop mooks, and Big Enemies/Koopalings/very limited original characters that feel like they were the result of a monkey's paw wish for original characters. Count Bleck alone solos EVERYTHING between SPM and the TTYD remake. I'm sorry. Add in Dimentio and it's not even fair.

      @@fawfulthegreat64 Whoah, man, that's a lot of text I won't read. I'm not hating on Super Paper Mario, chill. I'm just saying it's an 8 out of 10 at best. Which is to say, a good game.

    • @TheWigglergler
      @TheWigglergler 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      @@fawfulthegreat64 The level design in SPM is terrible on a fundamental level. I say this as someone who likes the game. The code thing cannot be excused by a "well it only sucks on a first playthrough" because that's still terrible game design. Running on a wheel for five minutes just to get a code is stupid and inexcusable. It's just not fun. This sort of thing appears time and time again throughout the game; the level design is designed to be annoying rather than fun. The game makes you run back through a level just to type "please" an absurd number of times in order to get a stupidly long code that exists for no reason other than to be obnoxious. The Overthere Stair is just a repetitive scattering of identical clouds. There are many examples of this throughout the game. It is a massive flaw that cannot be ignored just because you like the characters.
      The game's story also isn't the masterpiece that people seem to think it is and honestly it really suffers from a lack of real, permanent consequences but that's not really the point of this comment. It's still the best Mario story but it's not good enough to just ignore the game's many flaws.

    It just so happens that I did replay Super Paper Mario recently, and to answer your question about its quality...I noticed around Chapter 3 (Bitlands), that's where any fun to be had in the gameplay starts to fade. So I should be honest and say that I didn't beat the game a second time, I stopped at Sammer's Kingdom because I just don't have the patience for that kind of crap like I did when I was 12.
    So addressing another point you made, you are very right to say that this is the perfect game for 10-13 year olds. Like I said, I was 12 when I played through it all, and at that time I had played mostly only Nintendo games. So the sheer amount of lore that this Mario game had in it was mesmerizing to me, and I was somehow willing to power through places like Sammer's Kingdom. Though I distinctly remember the mind numbing torture that was trying to find that apple for Peach in the Overthere.
    Overall, I appreciate that you don't take a completely black and white perspective on the game. Its story and eccentricity are really great, but the same cannot be said for the gameplay. Good review, thanks!

    1:34:49 I just played through Super Paper Mario like a week ago and I gotta admit... I still really love the game. Yes, I recognize its shortcomings. Its levels are often bland and tedious in their design, but to me. That's their only problem. Along with all of the good you said about this game's style, the game is constantly offering variety and the game is chalk full of secrets that really make this world feel bigger and I love that. I didn't agree your "roadblock" criticism, but I respect your opinion still. The combat of this game isn't bad either because it feels like every other stage that the game gives you another tool to mess around with and keeps me engaged with the gameplay. I also think that the story is a little more basic than your average story, that doesn't prevent me from being fascinated by this game's world. What makes the first three Paper Mario games special is that they try to offer a form of continuity between them and glues it with the rest of the Mario world! TTYD did an exceptional job at this, while Super still continues this trend. Later games often just neglect the past world building and decide not to care enough to give characters names for instance, which takes me out of the experience. There were plenty of side quests within the first three games that were all about expanding the Mario universe.

    I absolutely agree with your thoughts on Super and Color Splash. I replayed Super two years ago, and it was genuinely one of the worst experiences I've had. The ganeplay wore me down so much that I couldn't bring myself to care about anything else in the game (besides music).
    Color Splash was always a game I loved. I hate when people call a whole game bad because of a few flaws when the whole experience is good otherwise.
    I was a little upset you didn't like Sticker Star though, but that's understandable. I managed the enjoy it even though I already knew all of its flaws when I was going in. I found the overworld exploration fun, and when you treat enemies as obstacles other than things you want to engage with, it becomes more fun to find ways to avoid them

    sick vid. I also beat TTYD for the first time last month. Also the original version. It definitely lived up to the hype. I had played some of it as a kid but my gamecube and all my games got stolen so I had only gotten to the tournament arc. It was a dash of nostalgia for the first half followed by a heaping dose of some of the best Mario RPG-ing of my life. I'm a die hard SMRPG fan and I have to remove that crown and give it to TTYD now.

    I don’t mind Color Splash having a Basic story because it’s not trying to have a grand story. It’s just trying to be a funny Mario adventure and I’m fine with that. My only problem with the story is that it’s heavily implied and then revealed that Bowser was possessed by the black paint the entire game, but they never do anything with that and then at the end of the game everyone acts like he was the bad guy the whole time even though he was doing everything against his will. It’s just so weird. I also don’t buy that Kamek didn’t know bowser was possessed. He’s smarter than that. The game also could have made the black paints plan be a lot more interesting just by using what’s already in the game. In the game black paint is extremely toxic and can kill you and it can also possess you. The paint possessing Bowser wanted to cover the entire world in black paint, so why not reveal that the reason he wants to do that is because he would kill everybody on the Earth, and then the black paint would possess their dead bodies creating a new world of paint folk that he would be the ruler of. All of the pieces are there it’s just that the game doesn’t use any of them

    Gotta say, it's nice to see someone come at this series with pretty fresh eyes. I grew up playing the likes of the N64 game on Wii VC, Thousand-Year Door from Chuggaaconroy's Let's Play, and Super because I liked the previous two. I never played any of the future ones but from the description of the battle system for Sticker Star, it just sounds like an utterly worse Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories (the GBA one, it gets nowhere close to Re:Chain if this video's anything to go by).

    I 100% agree with all your points regarding "original characters" with clothes and accessories, and I have to rant a bit.
    I just watched Harry Gold "fix" character designs from the new era of Paper Mario, and it's baffling when you really listen to what he's saying. "Fighting living origami creatures and office supplies is creatively bankrupt because... it just is, okay? They should have been modified versions of existing Mario creatures, because that would have been WAY more creative!"
    ...I dunno, I feel like the very decision to turn origami and office supplies into enemies is ballsy and creative in that distinctly "Nintendo" way, throwing a complete curveball that nobody would have expected. It's funny as hell if you have the CREATIVITY to think of it from Mario's perspective: these giant office supplies are literal extradimensional creatures that come out of nowhere and have the ability to alter the very fabric of Mario's reality, they're like the equivalent of Evangelion's Angels. And it absolutely reeks of childlike whimsy, like someone actually sat around and played with these objects and CREATIVELY thought long and hard about how they COULD be imbued with personality and function that they weren't created to have. You're a fucking liar if you tell me you've never pretended as a kid that your stapler was some kind of Pac-Man mouth with sharp teeth, or that you never rolled around a roll of tape like a toy car. I love seeing these common fantasies we've all dreamed up while bored in the classroom come to life in such a vibrant and fun papercraft world... Plus, given that TOK's battles take advantage of a 3D space, it makes sense that the enemies and bosses all had to be 3D objects this time. The battles would feel a lot jankier if those characters were replaced with the standard Paper designs that can only be seen clearly from one angle.
    Sure, it's cute to dress up the standard Mario characters to make them feel more like individuals. Don't get me wrong, I love Goombario and Lakilester and Bobbery and all those guys. But it reeks of blind and narrowminded fanboyism when people act like "Goomba with hat" is the ONLY way to express creativity and artistic expression in the Mario universe, and it's kind of embarrassingly childish too. People laugh at ridiculous Sonic OCs all the time, why don't we shove Paper Mario fans into trash cans as well?

    • @zennistrad
      @zennistrad 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I wouldn't say "creatively bankrupt", but I think they're boring antagonists because they're just... things you see in real life. Completely unaltered from how you see them in real life. I can go to my old office job and see a thousand things that look just like them.
      The rubber band guy was at least a bit creative because it actually looked like a guy made from rubber bands, instead of just rubber bands and nothing else.

    people will be more critical of things that make the same mistake twice, and color splash seemed to make the same mistakes as sticker star, so people were harsher on it. It doesnt help that the weaknesses of the modern papper mario games were the older game's strenght. M&L Paper Jam added credibilty to the conspiracy that nintendo retrained the creativity of the RPG devs. However I hope they don't make "TTYD2" Next, instead just copy the Battle system, partners, and charecter design of that game to a modern paper mario game.

    Also- so I played Super Paper Mario in college- or more accurately I watched my friend play it in a room with the rest of us- and we had a good time! It was enjoyable because we liked watching my friend get trolled and we had someone else in the room on gamefaqs to help look up the PINs and all that crap, and the frustration made it funny. I think- it's hard to really remember why we liked it, just that we did.
    ..I went back to play it again about 13 years later and boy. Was it tedious. It just kept going and going and every level was boring. I forced myself to beat one 'chapter' per night with a friend of mine and it was long and it took forever.
    Some of the jokes were still funny and the plot was okay, although it felt... Weird and uncanny in a lot of places- like playing the game is sort of uncomfortable. But mostly I just remember it being long and boring and uneventful and by the half way point I was just hate-playing it because I was already half way through and I wasn't going to let the game beat me.

    They might come at you for the super paper mario takes but I've been seeing people turn on the game as of recent. It's a platform game that feels worse to move in than fancy pants. It's not an absolute tell but I tend to be cautious of any game talked in high regard without mention of the gameplay itself and that game is one of the games that gave me that mindset. Thousand year door is peak and as obnoxious as the fans are with their hate for everything after TTYD, you kinda get it even though it's ridiculous. Like you said, most of the new ones do have the spirit of TTYD they just don't have the look or nearly as good combat💀

      Correction: Super Paper Mario is an action RPG. The focus of the game is attacking enemies to level up and using other RPG elements to get stronger. Platforming was never the focus of the game. Most of the hate seems to come from people not realizing what kind of game it is. It has its flaws, but complaints like “There’s no turn based combat” or “It doesn’t control like a platformer/not enough platforming” aren’t valid criticism.

    i haven't finished the video yet, but in my opinion ttyd and spm are games whose humor is trying to astronomically annoy and inconvenience the player as many times as possible as a joke and i've seen people get mad whenever that's pointed out, like not liking it = not "getting the joke". i also cant understand how that game is seen as "underrated" when it's been the best selling paper mario game since it came out two decades ago and, like you pointed out, has a billion videos praising it presumably made by people who experienced its cliche school shooter mentality romeo & amnesiac juliet story as a kid and thought it was good

    I like Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam.
    The Thousand Year remake is better than the original. They might have removed a perv from the Mario game, but it's a Mario game. Otherwise, the stuff they changed actually brings it more in line with the original Japanese script. I believe the English and Japanese versions are both using the original Italian script, which only made minor adjustments to Vivian over the original English script's complete butchery.

    I honestly never heard anybody truly defend Color Splash, but after watching this video I kind of want to check it out. The forced Gamepad integration does kind of irk me though. I feel like Color Splash and to a lesser extent Origami King were both at the wrong place at the wrong time. Sticker Star was terrible and not what people wanted from Paper Mario, then the two games proceeding Sticker Star looks like direct sequels, terrible mechanics and complete sanitization and all. Everybody was screaming about how The Thousand Year-Door is the best game in the franchise (which it is) and Nintendo was just ignoring the fans for a decade straight.

    One change they made in the new English translation of the remake of TTYD, was to confirm that the character Vivian is transgender, which was clear in the Japanese original but they chose not to make it clear in the first English translation, so in that sense it is the game cube original that is toned down or ''censored'' to make it more fitting to western sensibilities at the time. Vivian marks in the new translation that it took her time to realise she was their sister, not their brother and In the original translation she is bullied for being ugly, instead of being trans.

    I think the only way of defending sticker star, or to put yourself in a mindset to enjoy it alongside the rest of the series. Would be to remember that this was the first portable paper mario.
    This was the super mario 3D Land to mario galaxy 2, the Mario kart super circuit to its Mario Kart 64, the donkey kong Land to donkey kong country.
    Not saying this excuses the flaws, but just saying that part of the appeal was the novelty of it all. It is a cheap portable paper mario, but an actual paper mario on the go nontheless.
    The problem might be that paper mario's graphic style is so simple that it really doesn't take much for a game to look like a proper paper mario game, and the 3DS was more than capable of far more than that. But still I don't doubt that nintendo's mentality for its handheld games had already evolved at that point to what it is today, they still saw them to some extent as the cheap portable alternatives to the big console projects.
    They could have totally give us a proper new 3D zelda on the 3ds, but they gave us two n64 remakes and a new 2D zelda, or a new proper 3D Mario collect-a-thon, but they gave us a new 2D game and a 3D game with simpler 2D mechanics built into it. And this is what they think a simple handheld paper mario looks like. And to some extent it succeeds at it.
    But they probably should have just make a remake of the first one to achieve the same effect and people would have enjoyed it and celebrated it much more.

    • @leadbones
      @leadbones 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Nah. Console games as handheld games were not at all a novelty at that time. The GameBoy was 20 years old by then. It was just Nintendo being Nintendo.

    • @diegog1853
      @diegog1853 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Robert_D_Mercer I understand where you are coming from. I guess I just didn't expect much of an rpg from paper mario after super paper mario, which is arguably less of an rpg than sticker star.
      It's maybe hard to remember that sticker star was kind of a return to form in a lot of ways, when compared to super paper mario.
      I don't know I just play a lot of portable games, from gameboy to 3ds. And sticker star just gives me that vibe, of the water down cheap portable version of a paper mario game. The paper mario that you play on the bus, the one that you can skip in the mainline series, unless you are a big fan of paper mario or of portable gaming.
      To exist alongside resident evil gaiden or metal gear ghost babel, donkey kong land, batman Arkham origins black gate, or the various ubisoft, activision portable versions of games like call of duty or assassin's creed.
      Probably not the best defense for it lol. But I had fun playing it for what it is, just like I have fun with all the other water down versions of games. The biggest problem might be that the industry was already moving away from that mentality and the hardware was just too powerful now for cheapness.

    idk if this is a hot take but i find sticker star to be the most fun game to REplay. it's much more smooth the second time around when you know what to do, and you can do certain things out of sequence like doing world 5 before world 4 or world 3 before 2, the bosses are actually hard unlike every other game in the series when you don't use thing stickers (big cheep cheep is the only boss its 100% required), i really like the inventory management with having limited space and it increases, and more levels feel like simple point a to point b with occasional puzzles instead of super having every level be a gigantic door maze and constantly wasting your time. it's definitely got its problems but i always have a good time playing it, which i cant say for most of super and a good amount of ttyd, especially when both of those games make you backtrack after every single chapter. i'm also a lot more apologetic towards it because of how the dev team pretty much had to remake the whole game from scratch and it had been 5 years since the last game, so they probably just wanted to get something out there and as a result didn't polish every last detail. super reusing ttyd's engine came out 3 years after, and i think it shows in how many things in that game feel like they were just thrown in without approval
    edit: BASED COLOR SPLASH ENJOYER, it's also one of my favorite games and i can't believe there's an alternate reality out there where nobody could play it because of how gigantic the poll to cancel the game less than half an hour after its announcement was. and yeah, you're absolutely right about always having to preface things for any positive opinion on it and sticker star. the amount of vitriol you'd receive for that was WAY worse than it was after origami king came out and some people ended up enjoying it.

    You're on point with Super Paper Mario, it just bites off more than it can chew. The fourth wall break jokes are more annoying than paper puns. It tries to be a deep, serious story but doesn't pull it off well at all. And on top of that you have the gameplay, which basically goes for the worst possible way to combine the two genres. It's like, the closest thing Mario has to the Shadow the Hedgehog game. Edgy and dark for the sake of it, without really making it interesting.
