The alarm at Shipley is TOWS (Train Operated Warning System). Its for track workers to use instead of a lookout to warn of approaching trains. The 'chirp' is the safe sound.

    Wonderful! Where I grew up . . .
I lived in Burley (in Wharfedale) went to primary school in Menston, secondary school in Ilkley (you know, the place you'd never heard of before!), and my wife used to live in Guiseley!
We had a memorable meal in a well-known pub in Apperley Bridge back in our early days together.
    Happy days ...
I think Baildon station must have re-opened relatively recently as there was never a station which the trains stopped at there "when I were a lad."!
In "pre-Beeching" times (I am just old enough to remember this) Ilkley wasn't a terminus as the line continued on to Skipton via Addingham, Bolton Abbey and Embsay, though Dr Beeching originally proposed the closure of the entire line - a local outcry and campaign resulted in the line being reprieved as far as Ilkley.
Part of this closed section is what now makes up the preserved "Embsay Steam Railway", which I think would make an interesting subject for a future Vlog from you.
(Btw, it's not pronounced "Wharfadale", just "Wharfdale" 🤣🤣)

Hi G, another brilliant vlog, spectacular views and nice stations again, you said you had never heard of Ilkley, well, there is a famous Yorkshire folk song called 'On Ilkla (Ilkley) Moor Baht'At ' (You are far too young to have heard of it G) Baht'At meaning without a hat, lovely flowing water as well. Looking forward to the next one, stay safe.

  • @LiftInspector

I go down this way a fair bit to Ilkley and Skipton, really nice routes. The funny thing is I typically tend to catch the 333's to Ilkley and the 331's to Skipton. Sometimes the other way round, but normally that happens with me when catching these trains down Airedale!
At Kirkstall Forge, the seevices going to Ilkley and Skipton don't stop there except for a small number of services through the day. It's normally the Bradford Forster Square trains that stop at Kirkstall Forge though.

The line almost closed; it’s fortunes have certainly clanged. This was some years after the Beeching era, in the ‘70s or early ‘80s I think. It used to be worked by elderly Diesel trains, and when it was electrified these were replaced by even older electric trains withdrawn from service in London until the 333s were delivered. Why have the class numbers gone backwards from the older 333s to the newer 331s?

Very nice. I still need to go back and stay with my ex's family in Bradford, and do Ben Rhydding, Kirkstall Forge, and Applerley Bridge, the only 3 of the stops on those electrified lines I still need to do (because I ran out of time when I did the rest up to Ilkley).
All the electric services to Skiptok, Ilkley, and BDQ are always empty outside of peak times, and I'm sure I've been the only passenger on them a few times. Once I ended up travelling in the morning peak for some reason, and I couldn't get a seat...

OM-G, I've finally contracted the G-Bug - feeling compelled to join you whenever you shout "Squishy Baby"! There is no hope 🥴 Save yourselves!! Want more pix of the older station buildings & abandoned platforms now you've started showing them too 😉

That noise at Shipley means there are people working on the Track.

A line I know well, and often use when I’m staying in Bradford. You don’t mention that Apperley Bridge and Kirkstall Forge are recent re-openings, just a few years ago.
Shipley is now triangular, but the platforms on the main line, 1 and 2, were added in fairly recent times. The single track on the Bradford-Skipton side used to be double; I think it was singled to allow the track to be re-aligned to reduce the very tight curve and large gap. There are some fans attached to the station building which seem to be to extract radon gas, so the station is probably radioactive. Strange that with so few triangular stations there used to be another one not far away at Queensbury, closed in 1955.
Menston used to be a Junction for Otley, and I think beyond there many years ago.
Ilkley has a claim to fame in that it was the last station on BR to be gas-lit. There were plans to close the line so that was probably why electric lighting wasn’t installed for so many years after most other stations.
Ilkley used to have four platforms; 2 and 3 were an island and there was a subway through to 4. Platforms 1 and 2 were always a terminus, but 3 and 4 continued through where the M&S is now to Addingham, Bolton Abbey, Embsay and Skipton where they crossed over the main line tracks to serve platforms 5 and 6. There is still track through what was platform 5 which serves a quarry. Ilkley to Skipton closed in 1965.
You often visit supermarkets near Stations, but you missed a very good one in Ilkley. There is a second exit down steps at the far end of platform 2. Going down these steps and about five minutes walk along the street almost opposite them takes you to Booths. Always my first place to visit when I arrive from London. Booths was built on the site of the Ilkley gasworks and when the buildings were demolished some of the stones were kept on site and used to build the shop. Booths has toilets by the way, since you always seem to need them!
Sorry, I didn’t intend for the post to be that long.

When I used to travel over to Lancaster from Leeds in the 1970s, I remember (just about!) that the train from Leeds used to "overshoot" the station and then reverse into the Bradford to Skipton side. Can't remember whether there was one platform or two at the time on that side.

I haven’t been able to find out when the second platform closed but I think it would have still been in use then. First one platform was built on the main line side, then the other one later, but the Bradford to Skipton platform closed before this happened, so Shipley never had all six platforms in use at the same time, unlike Queensbury (and Ambergate). Also, the inner platforms on the three sides at Shipley do not all meet at the corners, so you could not walk around the triangle, the main line platforms being some distance away on the other side of the car park. With a triangular station at least one side will have to be on a tight curve, so it’s unlikely that any more will be built. Network Rail did list platform 5 at Shipley as being one of the locations where work was required to reduce the gap but I don’t know what they intend to do. It’s pretty bad now, and I think would have been worse when the second track was in place.
