The new Annex for the Smittybilt XL tent is started to make an appearance, but what does the new one look like anyway? Check out this video where I show the Annex (2888) attached to the Smittybilt XL Tent (2883) to show the sides, how it attaches, and the floor material!
If you have any questions, hit me up below!
Wow, great overview. That was a very nice tour so now I finally got a good view of the interior. Thank You
Glad you enjoyed it! There were some other videos of the "old" version which had no floor in the annex
very good review. I've been binge watching reviews on this. By far the best one I've seen
Thanks! I’m sure you know, but there is a v2 of this tent out. Looks to have some good upgrades...and I think the annex is finally shipping too (tent came out before annex, by several/many months)
Very cool review! Simple and to the point! Subscribed!!
Tent sounds fantastic! The ideas.for.illuminating the lafders' rungs are brilliant! GREAT tevirw--- 😃🙃👣
tape grip for the ladder
Hi what size is good for xl memory foam queen or California king? Sz
Thank you so much for making this video. It's super helpful.
Which LED and dimmer did you use?
Did you rain test the ⛺️ tent? Where can it be purchased MSRP?
I haven't rain tested it yet-from what others have said it seems to be "waterproof" but the one pole is the "weak" point since rain collects on the top. Some have reported the pole bending. Ebay is usually best price, but 4wheelparts and many other retailers have the tent.
What’s the led you used?
I am going to buy the gen 2 version the improvements make sense and it seems like the listened to the owners on things that could be improved. Looking at your sidewalls there is a lot of light bleeding through and the impregnated canopy of the gen 2 appears to be better suited for rain. All in all a gen 1 was a good tent though.
Yeah the new tent looks like a lot of good changes were made
I ended up buying the 23zero walkabout 72 because it is canvas and coated so no light bleeds through. Love the new tent and thanks for videos like these. 👍
Same issue with my ladder. I just upgraded to a telescoping ladder and had to move the mount over.
Nice! Amazing how crummy the ladder is that comes with it.
Looks like the tent is not centered, is that so you can install the annex?
Partially. The tent is off center, which enabled better usage of the annex, but also allows for a storage rack on the other side/makes it easier to access gear from the bed.
thanks, that gives me an good idea on how it would function or actually, not function on a lower set up.
Okay, got it measured. 75" from floor to bottom of tent. 10 inches may be be a bit scrunched up, but the side pieces/outside corners could be pulled away from the trailer/vehicle so it wouldn't be scrunched up. May/may not interfere with the door zipper though.
Dumb question, is your truck bed the 5'7 or the 6'4?
Would you get a 3" topper or is that too thick? I see that you recommend the Cal King size.
3" would be darn close to not fitting. Well, do you mean with the smittybilt pad or without? Cal king just fits the extra width of the XL tent better.
@@chazpages Yes with the Smittybilt 2" mattress. I think that any mattress should have a min. of 5" to be really comfortable. I guess one could cut the 3" add on in half, roll it up and when you now close it is only 1.5" addition; compared to others using 2". Thanks for the reply.
What bed rack do you have?
Kind of a combo-I’m using adarac rails and compact camping concepts “no weld” towers and unistrut. th-cam.com/video/ZzwoB47HW2U/w-d-xo.html
how high is the bottom of the tent off the ground? Looks like the annex is at a good height to keep the walls off the ground. I am buying both and trying to see how tall to make my rack. Great video!
I've had this question a few times, and I haven't had the tent out recently. I think it was about 75 inches, but I will definitely recheck when I have it set up next. I'll have a new/updated review then anyway since I've changed the rack a little bit too.
I have two questions, how well does the towel at the ladder base work? I notice my ladder slips so badly on the bottom of the annex. Also, how do you manage to close the tent with the mattress? I had to ratchet mine and I left it strapped and then put the cover on. Thanks!
Towel worked well, I did it mainly to help with puncturing the bottom of the annex, but it helps stay in place too. Closing with the mattress is almost impossible/not recommended if you have sleeping bags in there too. I think the hinges are okay, but the base/platform seems to be under a lot of stress...I tried to sit/push on the edge of the tent to help compress the memory foam a little bit!
I like your setup a lot. How high is the tent from the ground on your truck? And is the hight adequate for the hight of the annex?
I know I have the measurement somewhere, but it is adequate. I would like to get it another few inches up (okay, maybe more than a few) as I had about 6-10 inches "extra" on the annex. I'm almost 6 tall, and I could walk under this setup.
Hey man nice set up you have..what size was the 2 in memory foam topper that you purchased and did you need to trim it up? Also i will be using a Dodge Power Wagon 6.5 ft bed with it installed similar to yours, do you have any issues with not being able to get to anything against the cab?
It was this one right here (cal king size) and it fits just perfect! amzn.to/2OYzTrn
I’ve had zero issues with the cab-I’m really happy with the setup.
Very nice!
Thanks!
Did you say drunk 4 year olds did the drilling? LOL
haha yup. The holes were waaay off. You could even see where the drill bit was wandering all around before drilling.
@@chazpages this is probably seriously outdated for a reply. I watched this and many other videos before I even bought mine. Mine was purchased for a unique situation which because of everything going on ended up not being used. We set it up yesterday anyway, and the "drunk 4 year old" comment is spot on. The instructions were in dark black and white, so barely able to see photos. We had to redrill EVERY mounting hole on the floor of the tent, the ones they put in were 2 inches off center from the ones above it. The ladder looked pretty good however I am sure I did not put the bolts in the correct sequence (Washer, spring washer??? plastic nut). I never even saw a "spring washer". Needless to say we think alike I also have additional LEDS that dim, and foam for the ladder. I will be seasoning the tent tomorrow, again thanks for the video. I noticed you never used the support poles (did you get three, we got 4) that hold the veranda up over the annex. It took us hours to figure out how those installed. I talked with Smitty today and they have "no Idea" what the 4th support pole is for. Happy Trails
could you send a link for the led strip you have with dim?
right here! amzn.to/2Ky41H5 I ordered two of these, but I've only used about 6ish feet or so. I will be adding more under the tent so when it's folded out I have a built in light.
Do you find any weight issues with 3 people up in the tent? Mine seems to feel like it's going to unfold with 3 people up in it
Which tent do you have? There was 3 of us, but one is only 55lbs or so (kid). With us in there though, I didn't feel like it was flexy/bowing at any point. With animals and people, we were only at about 400lbs total up there. I did notice that with the mattress out (everything out of tent while bolting down) that my knees would sort of cause a slight flex where I was kneeling, but it never seemed like it was going to fold up or anything.
Charles Pages cool! I have the same tent! It is rates up to 770lbs but I am thinking my ladder may have been at the wrong height
Hmm, make sure the fabric isn't caught in the middle (I found that the cover flaps on the side sometimes caught snagged in there). I unfold the tent, then pull the ladder out/find a spot for it to "sit" the feet on. The only other thing I can think of is what vehicle it's on. I could see suspension compressing a little bit with that weight causing the ladder to push the tent in the closed direction making it not locked together/not locked together as well.
what height is your tent mounted? i have some concerns on the annex with our trailer mounted xl at 65". I don't want it bunched up at bottom and the door not work but good to know the bottom can be zipped out.
I'll have to measure-but i'd estimate it's around 75" or more? I'm not quite 6 feet tall, but can easily walk under out tent.
Any issues with condensation on the platform of the tent?
Not yet-this trip was quite warm, and the coolest it was at night was about 70f. The tent stayed up during the day as well, so it would have surely taken care of any moisture. I've got several trips in the next month however, so I'll have a better idea then.
I’ve seen some “condensation mats” out there. This is a tempting buy, for sure!
I will more than likely get one, but just trying to find something cost effective. I have trouble spending $100ish on something that is essentially a breather/spacer. I also have a memory foam mattress on top of the existing smittybilt one-I'm not sure if that makes things better or worse however.
I feel you. Things get ridiculously priced.
thank you
Was that no weld trailer racks and unistrut i see?
Yup! Good stuff.
What size bed does your Ram have? I’ve got the 5’6” and I’m worried about the XL being wider than the bed length.
I have the xl on my truck with a 5’6” bed, Nissan Titan, and it does hang off the back. Totally usable still. Might look funny at first but I’ve gotten used to it
6’4 bed-don’t worry about length, I’ve got a bigger tent now that sticks over the tailgate by about a foot and I’m not bothered by it!
Yeah, usability over looks!
Can I get more info on your bed mount for your tent. I'm looking for the exact height on mine. Thanks in advance. Awesome video BTW
Don’t know if you ended up finding the brackets he used but they are from compact camping store, called Dinoot no weld trailer brackets. The company makes some good DIY rack options.
3:16 Drunk four year olds😂. Hilarious!!! I agree, that’s where the quality of the RTT is lacking. My drill holes are terrible in some places also.
Skateboard tape for ladder
It’s any man wanted... Gosh
I dont like it. Not fully sealed at the zippers which means bugs and mosquitoes can get in 👎👎
