  • Allelys Heavy Haulage loading Deltic D9009 “Alycidon” at Nemisis Rail, Burton on Trent and hauling it back home to The Deltic Preservation Society at The Barrow Hill Roundhouse in Chesterfield.
Due to a busy period Allelys had to use their brand new MAN TGX 640 8x4 250t ballast tractor that is yet to be fully painted and sign written.
A 13 a row Goldhofer Draw Bar trailer configuration was used to transport the Loco that usually weighs around 100 tonnes but this particular D9009 was down to around 90t due to having parts of its running gear removed.

I had the pleasure of seeing, and riding in, this magnificent locomotive in 2015 at the Bluebell Railway. It was worth the trip from Australia just for this.

You ‘re on the right track for this kind of work with that Goldhofer trailer steering on all axles. The driver does a very good job maneuvering in a tight space.

Yes they certainly are excellent trailers.

I’ve been to Barrow Hill a couple of times. It is a great place. I liked the way the driver reversed in despite that white van. Beautiful looking loco.

The drivers are exceptionally talented but the steersman is often an unsung hero. Without whom getting in to some of these places would be extremely difficult & in some cases impossible.
      Glad you enjoyed the video
      Thanks for watching

There were only a handful of Deltic locomotives built (22) and are very famous, that mainly operated from London Kings Cross to Edinburgh, and weigh about 105 tons that is about the same as a class 37. There are heavier locomotives, the whistling class 40s and the Peak 45s at about 130 tons, most vanished in the 1980s. Just imagine if one or more of the loader's tyres got punctured with the massive weight.

I think they have solid tyres on these trailers as nothing else could take the weight.

Makes me laugh when i look at the die-cast models and you get someone put a loco on a couple of pallets on a tri axle flat , normally in Stobarts livery and people buy them, i work out of Wolverhampton Rail and when the train comes in the loco is usually the 130 ton one.

Great videos but too much music on it for my liking

    • @Priestabload

Trying to edit with the original sound would
      a) leave the audio patchy as some of the footage and quiet obviously the stills have no audio at all. It would also take far longer to produce, time that unfortunately I just don’t have.
      B) would give access to the operators private conversations that are taking place.
Unfortunately music is very personal to everyone has they’re own tastes and a piece of music you may love, the next guy watching hates so it really is a no win situation.
So as I say to anybody else who complains about the music in my videos if you don’t like it just turn it down! It’s really not that difficult.
      Thanks for watching though Martin.

I remember seeing this being moved and thinking why didn't it get towed by rail? If anyone could provide an answer for me it would be much appreciated. Thanks for the awesome video you guys definitely have my admiration to be able to move that by road.

With heritage engines like this they usually don’t have a mainline ticket. There can be many reasons though just the same reason a car ends up on a car transporter…. Breakdowns and Mechanical issues, relocating to another railway. Exporting etc etc

Why has some of the running gear been removed? I saw this at the burton train site a few months ago. Is it being retired or repaired?
