  • I drove to Kevin Kimball's workshop recently (February 2021) to check out the progress of my Lockheed Vega project. As you remember, we re-started the restoration in 2019, and Kevin and his son, Kallin have been rock n' rolling on it since - even through this crazy time! Well, let me tell you, I was extremely surprised, and pleased by the progress. Come along and check out what I saw. Part 1 we view and discuss the fuselage frame work. In Part 2, we'll talk about the making of the fuselage skin. Pretty Cool!

    :49 Need a bigger airplane?
15:01 Good idea to get those parts out of your SUV. It would certainly mess up your day to be half way home, look in the mirror and see the parts still in your ride. (I've been there, done that, several times!)
28:59 I feel so old and out of date.
You're doing a great job in saving these 'planes Kermit. Also three cheers to the people of the past who thought "That's a neat old aircraft to keep".

For the amount of joy I get watching woodwork construction, I can't understand why I never got involved with a job in that field???
What a great tour! Whetted my appetite for Part II. Thank you to Kermit and Kevin and Kevin's assistant, who knew where everything was.

Always loving a Kermit Weeks upload. Thank you Kermit. :)
Edit: You know...that actually looks like it will be rather heavy in the long run. That`s a lot of laminated wood and glue. Add a heavy 300hp engine, six people, all the fuel, and everything else it`s amazing it could get airborne.
I see the strength in all the bulkheads but longetudinally not so much.
It just amazes me the amount of time, research detail and work that goes into these.
I`m just a lowly retired car mechanic with a curious mind.
    God bless you Kermit weeks.

Some cool building skills. Hard to believe the original was from1927! So great that Kermit has the interest and the wherewithal to do this and Having the Kimballs there to make it happen. Wonderful aviation history being saved and shared.
Kermit, each time I see you I have to grin! Years ago an old guy from Ohio came to see you about selling you some scrap planes he had collected. Walter came in and asked for you and was told that he had just walked right by you mowing the grass in front! He was not impressed! (as told to me by his son, Wally)

Kimball is without a doubt a master! Absolutely spectacular what he's recreating for you. Is this the Vega that Dave Jameson from Oshkosh owned back in the 70's? Such a glorious aircraft! Next to the P-35, the Vega project is THE project that interests me the most. As you walked into the hangar with the rudder and vertical, I thought I saw a early Bonanza fuselage and what looked like a Clip wing Monocoupe wing; Is that correct?
Thank you for your commitment to preserving these old airplanes and aviation history for all to enjoy for generations to come.

you can use the CAD 3D data you have on the metal fitting that is cracked - and there are mold makers/services houses that will 3D print you a sand mold so you can cast those parts - then machine them - that is really much cheaper than the old process of sand casting with a wet sand mold of the old days. Plus the cast parts can me stronger than the machined billet parts once heat treated after machining - and of course more authentic as well...
