The Clone High Reboot Is a Letdown

- The original Clone High was a crazy, genius, and hilarious show that was canceled too soon. But luckily it's come back in the form of a reboot/revival twenty years later....and it probably should've stayed canceled

At the very least, the reboot improved the theme song. It looked super cool and loved how it changed themes for different episodes
I don't like the new Abandoned Pools version, but all of the other versions are great
@@IHateDubstepit’s basically the same as the extended version from the original just slightly updated lyrics at the beginning
I wouldn't say improved, the other had a better vibe, this is too clean like the look of the reboot.
@@SchmergDergen Yeah the vibe is like "whatever they'll watch it" in the new intro "Then the clones as teens were frozen. Brought back decades later. Why? Back for reasons we aren't disclosing." Yeah exactly why? Why is it back, and why is it in this state? Good question.
I kinda figured sexy teens couldn’t be resaid
This season honestly should just be scrapped and they should start over. Too much damage was done by these awful writers.
yeah TOO much damage...
Start over? Like the music by abandoned pools?
This.
@@ihatethis103 The intro song is fine. Though I like the lyrics of the original one because it has a cool vibe to it. Perhaps it's just the quality of the show that makes me feel this way but "Now the clones are sexy teens now. They're gonna make it if they try. Learning, loving, shoving, jiving. They'll make you laugh and shiver and cry." Comes off like a promise that the show delivers on. vs. "Now the clones as teens were frozen. Brought back decades later, why? Back for reasons we're not dislcosin'. Gonna give high school another try." The message that gives me is more cynical than the season 1 intro. My worst interpretation of it can be "Yeah, whatever. You'll all watch it anyway." The vibe feels more artificial and not as fun.
@@ihatethis103Can we just start over?
The new writers actually said they hated Abe in the original show because he was “mean to Joan”. So they completely missed the fact that he was just a parody of the nerdy main character who never picked up on his childhood friends love for him. So in the new show they purposely shit on him because they don’t like him.
They really brought in the fanfic writers to work on the actual thing…good lord
@@BlueGlare8 They really did. Along with how they treated Abe, they also put Joan and JFK together because “he treated her way better than Abe in the final episode”, completely missing that they were not. Along with no longer treating the show like a parody of Teen Dramas at the time. There are so many modern Teen Dramas that could have been made fun of today like Riverdale and Euphoria, but they just made it a straight laced cartoon with no other jokes than referencing modern things.
These writers clearly have been failing upward.
@BlueGlare8 nah, there are some fanfic writers that would be amazing writers for shows. You just need to find the ones who understand the characters and love the show for what it is. Not what they would personally want it to be.
They definitely only watched the last episode
fun fact: old writers loved abe and wanted him to be more included and the new writers hated abe and wanted jfk and joan to be more included and focus on their relation ship from the last episode of s1
The old writers twice ?!
@@josukeavocado my dumbass meant to say new writers lol
@@BucketIHead all good 😂
The old writers (aka the creators) ahould have put their foot down and told them "No."
The dumb thing was that Abe was a character made to mock leads in other teen dramas (formula is either 2 hots girls fighting over the unimpressive lead or is pining for 1 while a less conventionally but still gorgeous girl pining for them.) He was made completely clueless until he saw an injustice and gave a moving speech. If you compare it to an 80s movie like better off dead, the formula is usually "guy wants hottie, hotties affection is highly conditional, guy works towards hottie clueless to the cute girl who likes him, realizes after their journey that the close friend is the better choice.) They made him a parody, a subversion, and his own character. He would falter at times but would stand up for friends or what is right. He realizes he loves Joan and instead of winning in the end, dude gets cucked and sacrifices a chance with the object of his desire for the season. And the running joke was that we've seen this trope and they poked fun at it from start to finish. Abe was the butt of many jokes but you could kind of see why he was seen as kind, sweet, loyal and supportive and why Joan and Cleo like him. The show already abused the poor guy in season1 and we didn't feel too bad for him as he was usually acting like a jackass but realized he was and ceased.
They just neutered him and somehow saw the "regularly unfaithful, promiscuous, somewhat dumb but demonstrated a vulnerable side after Ponce (as a joke that led to set ups for more jokes) and had exactly ONE moment of emotional intelligence during the prom episode but meant to be a great side character" JFK and thought "everyone loves him, let's have him and Joan date." Like the thing they should have done should either have been mocking the love interest dating the jerkass in teen dramas is either A) Have her try and get with Abe where he's only into Joan when she's unavailable and pines for Cleo when they're together and address how dumb it is and maybe give commentary about how it's dumb but does happen to some people before moving onto other drama to make fun of. B) do a different approach like "maybe they feel weird about Prom and stay apart because JFK mentions he'd be getting sloppy seconds despite liking Cleo, or even him remaining indecisive and a status quo returns or shifts to where Cleo goes for Abe and he gets tempted but stays loyal and the dynamic shifts from season 1 developments.
JFK was a perfect foil for Abe but now JFK is the MCs love interest (Joan is basically the real MC) and Abe is the butt of every joke while being a simp. The dynamics the characters had and the tropes they mocked in the original weren't carried over and it's jarring. The new writers didn't understand what made CHS1 such a classic.
I stopped watching the reboot halfway through episode 4 bc i was so pissed at how the writers massacred my girl cleo
Turned her from the smartest character in the original to a pumpkin spice drinking dumbass
@@BlueGlare8To be fair, she always was a little vapid, but yeah. She had more death than that.
I had to stop before the last two. Abe being cut out of the friend group seemed like it was trying to tell a story. Then the next episode that was erased... cool, couldn't care less now. There is no justification for the new show direction.
I'm annoyed that they replaced her voice actress.
The reboot makes me miss the days when Clone High was still in an indefinite hiatus
with the open ending and GHANDI
Completely agree with you on the new characters. There was so many missed opportunities for jokes about the real people they were based on. Confucius and Harriet have nothing do with the people they were cloned from, Frida only has the positive aspects and Topher only has the negatives. It’s really telling that Topher had less than 10 minutes of total screentime yet he’s the most popular new character - because he’s the only one they try to make any jokes with (and they still do him so dirty in the later half of the season...)
I’m honestly glad Gandhi was cut from season 2. I can only imagine how bad they’d ruin his character had he stayed
I wish all the old characters were cut off mostly cleo
They couldn't bring him back if they wanted to. He caused a lot of controversy in the first season.
The fact that Futurama kept the same quality it had 10 years ago just rubs salt in the wound
It really is a night and day difference huh?
@@BlueGlare8 ya with Futurama the characters are done well so far but with clone high they really messed up all the charecters
The problem is (HBO)MAX’s writers. Look at the other animated shows they produce (Velma, Harley Quinn). They have all the same problems as the new Clone High - pointless gore for the sake of it, annoying political BS and thinking that the humour is more intelligent than it is.
I'm gonna watch the new season of futurama tomorrow morning how good is it?
@@snowbunnie1113 At least those shows has better animation. The style itself didn't change and there are worse looking reebots, but something in the movements bother me.
The wealth of teen dramas to parody today - 13 reason why, riverdale, Euphoria, the new Gossip girl and new Pretty little liars; and this new season doesn't take advantage of any of that. I am so disappointed and this video summed up my every thought & feeling
Can you imagine how funny it would've been if one of them referenced "the epic highs and lows of high school football" 😂
As someone who never watched the show, when I first saw videos on s2 I genuinely thought Topher was a S1 character. Best written character in s2
This is what happens when you let people who took the teen drama crap from season one seriously write the show,
Dude could you imagine how big of a plot point it could've been that many of the Foster Parents passed away during the 20 year wait? Imagine being frozen for 20 years and then being told that the people you most considered family died not knowing what happened to you. Grief, loss, so many themes could've been explored akin to that one JFK plot in season 1, and ironically he may have been able to be the voice of consolation in this plot, having had to grieve for a close friend once before.
Instead we get "Damn my foster dad died in a clarinet accident, oh well"
A problem I have with season 2 is that the background and supporting characters are barely acknowledge at all whereas in the original they would constant historical jokes about the background characters like how Jesús accidentally shoots himself in the hand with a nail gun. The only way you would know who the knew background and supporting characters are is if you look it up, for example one of the new characters is a clone of Sacagawea but up until one of the main characters said her name halfway through season 2 you most likely wouldn’t know who she is because of and don’t make any historical jokes or references towards the real Sacagawea and honestly all of the supporting characters personalities just seem to be whatever the plot needs their personalities to be
Fact about Abe: apparently the new writing staff (to the surprise of absolutely nobody) didn’t like Abe and said he was “to mean to Joan” when hee didn’t see her feelings towards him, thus making him the punching bag of the series.
Yeah….
Imagine being a writer who hates the character youre supposed to write.
I’m glad people are now speaking out that this reboot is bad when it clearly is
I’m so heartbroken to find that not only did Chris and Phil actually work on this Garbo reboot, but they themselves wanted to push the rebooot to a modern version. I’m genuinely curious if they’ll listen to the criticisms for S3
They didn't write the new season
@@schemar17 you are CORRECT! Just did a bit more research, on IMDB they are credited as creating all 10 episodes but not writing them… lol. My bad. Im still so heartbroken tho, def should’ve had them more involved 😭 my first comment was in regards to that interview they did on S2
@@PARTY_MUTT yeah you good I actually checked it out myself. The writers said they hate Abe so that's why he was written so bad this sesson
@@thescreamingweaselswillcry
And with all the news coming out about how they were an absolute nightmare to deal with, I can only doubt that they'd be able to salvage this show.
This video hit exactly everything I was angry about so PROPS TO THAT! I hope season 3 can take the criticisms and grow from them
watching this reboot genuinely hurt more than some of my breakups
They got rid of the main Shadowy Figure. I will never forgive them for this. He was the one starting the real conflicts most of the time.
Incredibly well said. Clone High Sesson 2 feels like you cut the fat off the steak and accidentally threw out the steak.
im more mad on how they changed cleopatra’s personality than gandhi being absent
Thanks for this. I’ve felt this way since the new series dropped, and was surprised I didn’t see more discussion on it.
I want to add how this series really lost a lot of its heart without Ghandi’s character. He was often a setup for cutaway jokes, and drove a lot of the B-plots for the series in its original run. Without him, and with the writers circling bad ideas for the rest of the cast, I think it just feels soulless.
this is the first review i have seen where Ghandi wasn't mentioned at all
They basically turned abe into meg now, which sucks, in the first season, he was never a bad guy, he didn't acknowlege joane's feelings for him, and fans hated him for that, still, why should they turn him into a punching bag nowadays for absolutely no reason?
The only character who is still good is scudworth, the rest all sucks
Now i am sure the creators and writers saw the demographic that brought CH back, saw the JFKxJoan fanart and the Abe Hate and thought "they brought us back after 20 years, we NEED to please those new fans"
While the old fans that liked since it aired are now seen as haters.
God damn thank you for saying everything i been saying since the show came out
The writers and the new fans simply dont get why the show was a cult classic back them
If they wanted to make a CH version that it was a actually a teen drama, it would be fine. Do a actual reboot
The problem is that this is ALSO a continuation
They should have just... idk erase everyones memory and started from scratch. Make Abe be the Joan of the story, and so on and so foward
What pains me is that, this season is watchable. I dont think is bad. But is not clone High!
It will never be Clone High
The fact that that’s probably what happened makes me sad
This ain't clone high dis reject college
I was binging S1 and S2 back to back and once I finished the first season I got the most insane whiplash moving on to this one.
I disagree that season 1 had a shoestring budget. It was probably the same as any other cartoon at the time. The limited animation is a part of the UPA/ Classic Cartoon Network aesthetic. Moving the characters and having stuff show up on screen doesn't cost extra in 2D animation. Fluid Disney quality movement costs extra.
What's telling is that the new writers were considered about putting teenagers in problematic and exploitative situations. That alone tells you these people didn't get the point of the og show
I think the season should've just took place in 2004 instead of having it in 2023 because the biggest let down for me is the constant references to modern technology and social media.
When I saw the new characters my expectations immediately dropped down, so at least I was prepared for disappointment
The only issue I had with this reboot was the Mr. B episode, which felt like it should've been something done in Season One.
But outside of that, I love this revival
This pretty much sums up how i feel about this season, im optimistic theyll improve on this.
I feel like the old Clone High had the vibe if a friendgroup had the chance to make a show.
This one feels like a bland cooperate run of the mil adult comedy animation, ESPECIALLY with the "🤓social media obsessed teenager" or "cancel culture🤓" shtick. Its OLD. YAWNN
i mean, Joan did become a literal smoothbrain, they removed her forehead hard edge
I do agree on some aspects. I watched the leaked first episode and I was super not into it cuz it didn't have the right VIBE from the original series. Like the writing was off.
And the new characters' designs were not good to me (cept for Columbus) cuz they had too much unnecessary details and saturated colors.
HOWEVER I gave the new season a chance again and I actually did laugh quite a bit in many of the episodes. I came to accept that not many reboots will be able to capture the same magic, but it is honestly a pretty decent season. It just isn't Clone High, you know?
Honestly I'd rate it a solid 7/10 and that's me being nice
I still hate the new characters designs though. They really could've made designs that fit the art style better.
Also all this is coming from someone who's not a huge critic on stuff like this. I just like to watch stuff for fun and I'm giving my two cents is all.
This season was honestly one of the most confusing things I’ve ever seen in a while. To me the first 4 episodes were mid as all hell with maybe episode 3 being slightly better, then it was complete garbage with episodes 5 and 6, then suddenly getting better with the last 4 episodes (except maybe the first half of episode 8 like it was disturbing and pointless). I honestly don’t know what to think about it, it definitely has room to improve….. but for right now I don’t know what to think of it
Speaking of the animation, everything also got super rounded out and I feel it really ruined some of the designs. Like why is Joan’s head so round now lol
I don't like her new design idk why tho
I thought the show was fine but one of my gripes is that they focused too much on shipping the main characters.
I like that Blue Glare follows the hidden code of mine of where you must have no face because it looks cooler. Happy your another one of those folks who don’t show their face, we need a no face community.
Amazing review. What's funny is that this season was so bad and so different than the first that you assumed it was written by differen writers. I doublechecked as well, as it was my assumption, but turns out they're mostly the same. Makes me wonder what went wrong... was it the corp side of things? Or did the writers change personally so much that they don't even understand their younger selves?
4:31 In the reboot Joan didn't care about popularity she was happy to have friends at all. She said in the 2000's she never had female friends. What made people ignore her in the 2000's makes her considered cool now. I never really saw Joan as the voice of reason. That sounds more like Mr. B to me. One thing I like about Clone high is the families are just as goofy as the guys. She is more wacky than say Lisa or Marge.
Doesn't she say something along the lines of "I'm gonna be a social outcast again" before being included tho implying she DOES care about popularity in the first ep of the revival?
@@Coolclipsclub5041 Maybe she did I need to rewatch.
I guess you can say something bad did happen to the Kennedys
Ty for mentioning the animation first, I didn't like it.
Also, it's like they forgot Clone High was a parody and satirical take one teen dramas.
Topher Bus is cool tho, but even he cannot save this season. I honestly consider this to be its own separate thing from Clone High.
I watched the first two episodes and completely lost all interest. It so disappointing from a fan who first watched it before the Covid resurgence.
Why didn’t they make season 2 like this instead? “According to this interview, several plans for season 2 and 3 were made, such as another addition to the Love Triangle, possibly an older teacher clone, Gandhi revealed as being the clone of Gary Coleman instead of Mahatma Gandhi due to a DNA mixup, and time travel used to extend the clones' high school years in a parody of Beverly Hills, 90210.”
Can't help to feel pesimistic when people said old shows should remains as it is since modern influence corrupts most of the original charm :c
Animation: good
Characters: mixed bags
Humor: mixed bags
Hi there I'm watching this video as a season 3 of clone high came out and if I'm being honest there was a lot more improvement in the 3rd then the last you should make a video on the new season! :)
I'm honestly surprised they didn't have Harriet Tubman say "The Civil war was only fought over states rights, nothing else". This reboot is that tone deaf.
It is a letdown. Gandhi wasn't in it!
The only seen thatmad eme laugh this "season" was literally when Mr. B, went full Kennedy an, dropped an F Bomb.
Of course there are no Gen X kids. We're all old now.
I dont think taking the story and the character interactions a bit more seriously would be a bad thing, as there are people who are clearly invested in the characters, but it doesn't even try to balance its original personality with that, and completely trashes characters other characters by not understanding the source material. And the jokes can be funny from time to time but other times it feels like its trying way too hard to just be topical.
It's a bad thing for Clone High which jokes about the drama that season 2 was hindered by.
@@SchmergDergen It could definitely make jokes at the expense of it still, I'm just saying it could try to find a balance as there is an interest in these characters that even old fans find disappointing when misrepresented (like Abe). But it doesn't seem to try too, it tends to be over the top, but it misses what makes the original great. for mostly lazier jokes.
In my opinion I think clone high season 2 should have been scrapped but it's not bad it's just a big mess
i love topher, and if theres a season 3 im gonna need at least 5 episodes about him. hes a fucking gremlin whos absolutely into abe and i live for it
this is what you get when you hire Genzie and people who’ve never watched the original This is what you get when you hire people from Twitter and fanfiction websites who are un talented
I genuinely believe that a majority of the writers for the reboot did not actually watch the original show. Instead, they probably only relied on a few clips from TH-cam and popular opinions about it.
This would explain why the reboot is so drastically different from the original in every aspect, and why Abe's character is portrayed as a unlikeable jerk despite him being a kind person in the original.
You raise some good points but I would like to say that the second half of the season was a big improvement and I'm actually kind of excited for season three.
Firstly, why do I think the show improved so much in the last four episodes? Well, for one thing, they stopped taking the relationship drama seriously. While I still thought the first six episodes were decent, (outside of one and four which were awful) my biggest issue was that they were taking the drama seriously. The original Clone High was a parody of teen dramas so it was bizarre to see them take the relationship drama seriously. However, it seems like they remembered that they were a parody of teen dramas around episode seven. All of the relationship drama in episode seven is played purely for laughs. Despite the plot with Frida, Abe, and Cleo constantly shitting on him which I don't like, I like that it's still played purely for laughs. The same goes for Joan and JFK's plot, with Joan getting extremely horny over JFK being intelligent. It was refreshing to see the writers actually poke fun at the fan favorite ship. Episode eight took the drama even less seriously, with the way Topher dramatically reveals that he has a crush on Joan, the Cleo and Frida plot, and the pool scene. Everything about episode nine was satirical, with the whole episode parodying Emmy bait. While episode ten didn't clearly parody anything directly, the ending had some of that patented Clone High melodrama.
I also noticed that they stopped shitting on Abe after episode seven. He even acts like his old self in episode eight, with him being naive but caring. He also gives her genuinely good advice in the same episode and there isn't a joke where it backfires or he's made to look like an idiot. He's also shown to be good friends with Frida in the same episode as well. While he doesn't really appear in episode nine, I still appreciate that they don't shit on him by making fun of Joan for having a crush on him. Episode ten also establishes that he's not defined by his relationship with Joan, as he befriends JFK.
So, outside of the end of the season being a big improvement, why am I excited for season three? Well, another one of the revival's biggest problems is that the characters don't act like themselves. However, I feel like everyone hating Joan in season three will fix this problem (except Cleo I guess.) Joan can go back to being an angsty loner, Abe can show off his caring yet conflicted side by wanting to stick up for Joan but still not being able to forgive her, and JFK can go back to being a womanizing jock due to being single. I also hope they do stuff with the new clones in season three. Anyway, that's all I had to say, it's ok if you still don't like it but my overall thoughts are this: the first half was mediocre, and the second was great.
The Clone High ReBoot felt like a LetDown
I love clone high and I’m glad it’s back. I do not think the new season did more harm than good, I do love the new characters, especially Topher, I just think Confusious and Harriet needed better designs. I’m looking forward to season 3
Hate all of the new characters.
I only like Kahlo, Confucius and Bus
Can You Tell What Is About PASULOL, The Thai Parody Animation.
People keep saying to bring back gandhi....
If they actually bring back gandhi im 100%sure he will act like a bastardized version of his character
7:04 You clearly haven't seen Andrea from Molly McGee, Casey from Moon Girl, and Kristine from Hayley's On it.
I disagree the first few episodes were meh but it found its footing in episode 3. It's not quite as funny as season 1 but it's still entertaining. For Your Consideration is one of the greatest episodes in the whole series. It feels like it toned down the craziness a little bit from season 1. I agree that Candid is unnecessary. She puts a leash on Scudworth and Mr. B so they aren't allowed to be as funny.
I loved season 2 😋🤙
Even if I didn’t like it, I’m glad you were able to find enjoyment in it👍
Was there any reason why they didn’t bring back toots?
The writers probably offed him to make Candide Joan new foster mom (though nothing really comes from it) I was just sad that Toots never makes an appearance as a ghost. Like:
Joan is sad/or has messed things up
Ghost Toots: “Now Joanie I may be a blind spirit, but even I can see...”
they literally killed him :(
Because they are racist ☝️🤓
I mean this would be great if it was rebooted in the early 2010s
But then came out post 2020s
For a show trying to be less sexist than the original, (making joan the main character, making it a point to give her healthy female friendships) they sure love making fun of the more traditionally feminine cleopatra. Episode 4 was so bad, where did her intelligence go?!?
Season 2 got better near the end. Praying Season 3 is a lot better.🙏🤞
It’s not
The first episode made me cringe painfully hard but i got over it and kinda enjoyed the rest of the show. But then i saw the mr b episode, and it was so fucking good in comparison to the rest that i almost felt embarrassed i had liked it. Mr b i love you so much. And the actual last episode was so out of place and just so horrible
Clone High and Clerks 3 are the two reasons why I will never ever watch rebooted or 20-year later sequels ever again. For this, I refuse to watch X-Men 97. Everything is woke and catered to tiktok audiences.
X-Men 97 is good, only bad thing is No professor x, if you don’t watch it people will make fun of you
I just realized, Harriet is to tall, she was 4 9, she was tiny
I would say yes the animation is worse. Reason is because of animation tweening. The original was entirely hand drawn meaning the actions looked far more natural. Far more subtle animation was done witht that show. It's one thing I don't like about modern cartoons is when they go down the animation tweening route. It just looks worse than if they had used a more limited hand drawn method
Yeah this shkw is a massive downgrade, the creators lost what made the OG series great.
I really enjoy harriet tubman, frieda khalo and confucious as characters
Tbats why somethings need to be left in the past
I wouldn't call Cleo and Frida's relationship forced. 1) Frida Karlo was bisexual in real life 2) In
Homecoming: A Shot in D'Arc Cleo said this line. " I almost did it with Joan. HOT."
But there was no build up to the relationship they bonded together in one episode and suddenly they wanted to be in a relationship
@@Y2JHHHDX Honestly I think that is what I would do in that situation. Date someone outside my friend group and just walk up to them.
As what RTG69 said the relationship came out of nowhere the two characters don't have much interaction so it ends up feeling forced.

Whatever hater, it's hilarious.
There are a million clone high reviews and they all say the exact same fucking thing.
Wow it's almost like season 2 has the same flaws that these reviews pointed out...
Im sorry, I've always hated the art style of this show, even before the reboot. It just looks awful to me.
6:21 wait that things a "her" ?
can everyone stop acting like season 1 was a Shakespearean Masterpiece compared to season 2? Clone high is just supposed to be a dumb little show that pokes fun at the times. I feel like a lot of these younger viewers don't find it funny because the show is poking fun at you. which is fine. Even Get Z is allowed to be made fun of.
Season 1 was better, season 2 was bad, deal with it.
Velma is better than the new clone high.
I would say both are equally better than the disaster of Foodfight
