  • I really wanted some saddlebags that had a classic/retro look so found some cheap ebay bags that I figured I would try out. Needed to make some modifications to the fit.

    I own a 2021 Bonneville T120 and I too found myself in the same place. What I did worked out extremely well. I bought Givi Dolemite hard case panniers. They carry a good amount, perfect strapping down dry bags on top or across, and look great on the Triumph. I think they would actually look great on the Speedmaster too....give it a touring look like a Harley.

    I'm waiting for the same bags to be delivered for my t120. Also, that speedmaster seat looks so comfortable!

    I own a 2024 Triumph Bobber and purchased the expensive Triumph rails (painted black) and Triumph saddle bags before researching them enough. The saddle bags aren't waterproof and can't be locked to the motorcycle or locked to protect the contents. They are held in place by a simple nylon strap and plastic clip. The whole "slide them on" the rails using sewn-on sleeves is terrible! I am now considering LongRide rails and sidekick mounts to modify my setup. I should be able to use the Triumph Saddlebags with new LongRide rails and mounts.

    My understanding was those pannier rails weren’t where you attached the bags but meant to add support to keep the bags out of the wheel. I believe if you had the center strap between the bags run under or over the pillion seat those rails would do the job of keeping the bags away from the moving parts. Maybe I’m wrong, just my .02.. enjoy the ride!

      I think you're right, as long as the bags are designed for it. I've since replaced these with the 'throw over' burly brand bags and the rails do exactly what you describe.

    I own a same bike, bought the more modern stile semi hard bags from Triumph, for a speed twin, had to adjust the rail (that where included in the price, as where raincovers) this made them sit al lot higher on the bike and nicely follow the contour of the fender. the bags are 13 liter each. sorry one can't attach a picture here

    I have the same bike year model and color but I bought the Viking Lamellar Stallion leather covered bags and mounted these with easy brackets so I could remove them.

    • @davesdiy9836

      The Lamellars are what I had on my last bike. They're very nice bags. I didn't have the easy brackets though, that would have been good to have as well.

    Maybe lengthen the straps and strap it on to the grab rail area so they don't hang down so far?

    Rain will get the best of your bags. The Triumph ones are waterproof.

    • @davesdiy9836
      @davesdiy9836  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree if I planned on riding in the rain I'd choose a different bag. I've had hard viking bags on my old bike, and they were pretty nice. For the occasion that I get caught out in a surprise shower, I'll probably spray these down with a water repellent. Also, since they're goat leather, supposedly they are more water resistant than other types. But probably not by much.

      The Triumph bags are not waterproof and they have terrible online reviews.

    • @brianshineboxmfg4404
      @brianshineboxmfg4404 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Triumph bags come with rain covers that work well. I had them for my T100 when I bought my Speedmaster. I didn't really like them on the Speedmaster, though. They are pretty clearly not designed for that bike. My biggest issue with the OEM bags is that you cannot take a passenger, not that it's that frequent but it does happen. I just picked up some canvas bags from Viking and used the stock pannier rails. They also come with rain coves, although I very rarely see rain.

    Why you did not hook the bags to the chrome rail behind the seat ????

    • @davesdiy9836
      @davesdiy9836  ปีที่แล้ว

      The support bracket for the bar gets in the way of using all 3 straps, plus when I tried it would sit up and back further than the actual pannier rails meant for supporting bags.

    Will a plastic one gallon bottle with one side cut out fit ?

    • @davesdiy9836
      @davesdiy9836  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I suppose it depends on the shape of the bottle. They're about 5 inches wide but since the leather is soft there's a lot of flexibility.

    Stop right where you are. These bags are not going to give you the service you need, never will. Get them wet from rain when carrying great, stretch city, of not complete failure.

    • @davesdiy9836
      @davesdiy9836  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I'm ever out in the rain it's because I got caught by surprise. I should make a video doing a 'wet test' on these bags just to see how well (or poorly) they hold up.
