"keeps their naturally aspirated v6" by the time this is out, it probably won't have one. Plus even when they co-existed the 4runner still wasn't toast
@naveenthemachine While that would be awesome and would be no brainer option for traditional V6, I don’t think it will use their NA V6 at that point due to emission standards and the fees from the V6 too, so it would most likely use turbo 4 cylinder.
They don't even need to put too much effort or development into it. They could just carry over alot of the frontier engineering and switch gear. It'd be a massive win for nissan
That whole phase of unreliable cvt transmissions scares me about Nissans, I know that's all any manufacturers use these days, but that was borderline criminal@@hamsterbrigade
True. Body on frame with good ground clearance and locking rear diff with solid rear axle, 4wd Auto for ice and snow. Formula for what works is well known. It's a Frontier with a topper and seats, and their current Frontier is great.
I had an 2006 Xterra, and loved it. I now have a 23' Nissan frontier pro4x, and really like it. But a new Xterra would be sweet...IF it was based off the frontier like the last one, V6 body on frame and basically a SUV version of the frontier.
I've owned 3 Xterras (2001, 2008, 2012) and still driving the 2012 Pro 4X. I won't give it up for what is out there in current market. I am patiently waiting for the revival version!!
If Nissan brings back the Xterra and keep it fairly affordable and simple, it will be a huge hit. Dedicated 4x4s are getting more expensive, and off-road fans definitely demand something more affordable. The Xterra doesn't need to be luxurious. If consumers want a luxurious Nissan off-roader, they could get the Armada.
Exactly! To keep the price affordable, all they need to do is offer reliable powertrain with minimalistic features that most people can bear. No panoroofs, No heads up displays, perforated seats, no premium audio etc. basic fabric or artificial but durable leather. If they can price it $35-50k, it will do well. If they go beyond that, they will struggle and dealers will struggle to sell them.
it would be sooo easy for nissan to just build an xterra off the frontier.. shorten the frame and change the body from a cab+bed to a 2 row suv. done. i have a 2nd gen xterra
Just shorten a frontier and give it some Xterra styling and it'll be a hit. I tell anybody looking for a new truck right now just buy a frontier because it's the only one I trust at the moment
Use the Frontier front styling, interior, V6 engine, with front and rear lockers for the Pro4x version and factory rock sliders…it would be a hit!! As a Chevrolet fanboy of the early to mid 00’s…I’d buy the hell out of this type of vehicle.
I owned one of the first Xterras ever in the US. Mine was the show car at the 1999 NY Auto show. And I bought it about six months before they were commercially available… sold it a dozen years later and bought a 2012 4Runner…
If Nissan brings back the Xterra, it should have rugged styling, like the first gen, wider than the frontier for comfort sake, use the Titat control arms for more wheel travel, tighter turn radius, and Frontier power train. It would be nice to have an optional manual transmission, too.
from those sales numbers, it seems the financial crisis of 2008 may have had something to do with the decline, as 2007 sales were still relatively strong.
@@mortallobster897 You can fit 33” tires with minimal modifications, and they fit perfectly on mine with 2” of lift. The ground clearance is actually pretty good!
Dang I think Honda will take this opportunity to turn Nissan into their off-road capable brand since Honda doesn’t really have super rugged vehicles. And let’s hope they bring back the Silvia, keep the Z alive, and usher in a new age of GTRs
Honestly this is a no brainer for Nissan! It’s a long shot but I would love if Honda piggybacked off the platform making their own 4x4 body on frame SUV.
I have a 2015 Xterra Pro-4x that I bought new and refuse to sale until I find something I like as much. If they bring back the Xterra I'll be the first one through the door of my local Nissan dealership
@dwalls417 ditto! Told my salesman that I'll be camped out in the parking lot. If any of you are in PA-DE-NJ, you are welcome to join me. Maybe we'll get group-pricing!
Nissan needs rugged SUVs. Just make every SUV rugged with body cladding and Falken Wildpeak A/T4W tires. If you ever come to Canada, you'll see the Canadian market T30 X-Trail, which they sold for 2 model years (05 to 06)
It’s needs to be a value buy, keep the frontier drive train and interior. It needs to look simple and not over styled. It also has to start at like 37k for the base model.
Still driving and enjoying my '12. Expect to do so for many more years...and I'd gladly purchase a NEW one, especially if they offer it with a STICK!!!
We owned a 2007 Xterra, fantastic vehicle on a true truck frame. I dont feel it was ever or will be competition for the 4 Runner more like the FJ. I think it will sell if they bring it out...
Just bought Nissan Frontier King cab 4X4 , ❤️it …… new old school, simply a truck….. 310 HP naturally aspirated V6,,,,,,, turbo more maintenance, more to go wrong, = $$$ and hassle. Passed on Toyota and GMC …… Nissan cars ahhhhh yea but trucks designed simple that’s ok in a world designing the simple into complicated. I actually have a foot parking break….. that saves Nissan and me 💰 money….. no extra chip needed….. KISS principle = keep it simple stupid 🤣🤣🤣
YES! Couldn't come any sooner. It will be a V6 carryover from the Frontier for longevity as Nissan doesn't have any 4-cyl engine for RWD application. What I want to see Nissan do is their take on the Frontier/Xterra Warrior with the 3.5L TT; even if it's just in experiment.
Most people who had bought xterras were people who bought and drove it until the wheels fell off. Great if you’re talking durability but bad for new vehicle sales. Also the original gen 1 Xterra had square headlights, came in auto and manual, option for a base 4 cyl and v6 shares with pathfinder, and had scuba material seats. I remember test driving one while in college
You mentioned the roof rack as it pertains to emissions regs. The idea occurred to me (not sure why it hasn't before) that a retractable roof rack that lays recessed in the roof top and/or flush when not in use might be a solution worth exploring. Next time you rub shoulders with these guys, you might throw that out there. I can imagine it in my head, but I'm not an engineer.
Still have my 2004 Xterra SE I bought new. Never wanted to get ride of it. Just bought a 2025 Frontier Pro-4X only because there wasn't an Xterra option and 4Runners are a second mortgage. Also X-Terra IS NOT Xterra.
I have a 2006 Gen2 Xterra. Bought new…18 yrs ago. Besides some annoyances… faulty radiator and needed replacment and and fuel sender crapping out, the vehicle has been insanely reliable. The old school VQ40DE enigne (Xterra, Frontier, Pathfinder) will go down as one of the most robust, no-nonsense engines ever… rivaling anything from Toyota.
Xterra's are holding their value from what I've researched online. Nissan needs to bring it back. Give it a similar body style as the Pathfinder, but build off Frontier platform.
One of my inlaws has an Xtera Pro4x. 70 year old woman who needed room for her great dane. She needed to replace her 420,000 mile Forunner but wanted a manual transmission. It's been a very solid, reliable vehicle
I get that the frontier charm with the v6 over taco 4 cylinder is appealing, but the standard cylinder makes almost as much torque as the frontier v6 and the hybrid slaughters it in torque. I own an 05 X and a 2020 4R Pro. Would love to see a new xterra but even with a v6 I doubt I'd sell my 4runner but for people who don't already have a 5th gen there's a solid argument there especially with the price of all the new trims above the sr5
With a new administration coming in that’ll be less concerned about EPA figures, if a company can come in quickly with a truck-based ICE V-6 powered SUV, I think it will do great. I’m thinking about a Passport in the next couple years, and this would be a great competitor.
Im still daily driving my 2003 v6 xterra. has nearly 230k miles, i have a few problems out of it but, I just cant handle the road noise, very low HP/TQ, and the abysmal 10 mpg, it was only averaging 14 mpg when i got it, but i don't even get 200 miles out of a tank. Im in the market and have decided to go with a truck, there's just not a lot of options when it comes to body on frame off-roading SUVs anymore. The Toyota line is way too expensive for me, so that leaves the bronco which i do like and am finding them discounted well below a Toyota. What draws me towards a truck is the offroad capability while still maintaining a decent mpg. The frontier is nice but not great mpg, i do like the Ranger because I've seen over 27 mpg out of the v6, but with the 16k discounts I'm seeing on the f150, that would bring the price down nearly around the ranger level, which is a better value.
If they keep the original formula for the XTerra, it will crush. Simple, based on Frontier platform, affordable, rugged, good looking. Use the V6 and be the only option for people who want a non complicated SUV with low ownership costs and thus high resale.
Fold flap back in like the new Armour so you can actually sleep back there. Possible independent rear end for smoother ride locking rear end possibly locking front end. If they do it right, they can kill Toyota 4 Runner sales. Rear air pump would be great to have. They need to get with the Nissan off-road community. Hopefully the Titan can also be saved and the Warrior finally built.
I think bringing back the X will help bring nissan back to the forefront. I had a solar yellow d21 pickup. The xterra has to be a better value and actually competitive.
I think a new Xterra would be a slam dunk. They don't need to do anything to the frontier's front fascia. Just close off the bed and be done. However I am still waiting for a hybrid or electric Element.
Kirk, When you mentioned rapidly declining sales after the first year, I thought you were talking about the 'legendary' FJ Cruiser.😉 Please submit all inquiries regarding future Nissan products directly to Honda HQ. 🤣 Speaking of missing 4X4s, where is GM's competitor to 4Runner, Bronco and Wrangler?
Since Chevy is planning to discontinue the ICE Blazer just like Ford decided to discontinue the Edge after bringing back the Bronco, they should continue with the ICE Blazer but base it off the Colorado/ Canyon and maybe have a GMC Jimny version to get even more sales
I'd consider an Xterra, depending on its perceived reliability and what 4WD method/system it uses. Even though on a dealer waiting list for the forthcoming '25 4Runner, I missed out (again, on a dealer waiting list) on getting a '24 GX550, so I'm disappointed with Toyota/Lexus right now not being able to supply either the GX550 (Overtrail) or still awaiting '25 4Runners, which are running late. It's a good thing I don't actually need a new vehicle at the very moment. Yes, I'd consider a possible new XTERRA.
All they need to do is a simple formula.... * 6 cyl or 8 cyl * 2 monoscroll turbos * Make the turbo plumbing small (or go from large to small and back to large). This bottle neck will lower the HP numbers for stock form * Be receptive of aftermarket tuners who will bring back the desire in buyers of the brand!
I’m looking at the INEOS Grenadier the 2025 Nissan Armada The Ford Bronco. If Nissan could build something a little bigger than the frontier but as rugged as the grenadier with the space of the armada they’d dominate the market.
Everyone is going to have their hands full competing against that new Honda Passport coming out. V6 10spd auto with looks that kill. Honda swung for the fence on this one & knocked it out of the park, imo. 4Runner dropping to 4cyl is a big mistake imo. Maybe Nissan replaces the Rogue with the Xterra, idk 🤷♂️. If that's the case then it's a Rav4 & CRV fighter
no, the xterra is body on frame of which the only comptition is 4rnr and they went hybrid. nissan would be the only non hybrid bof suv... ( not including the bronco or jeep which are in a different catergory))
@@venom999333 no i dont hav any inside knowledge.. im just saying, the whole purpose of the Xterra is a rugged, affordable, BoF 4x4. if they do bring it back, thats the only thing that makes sense. especially now that the have the new frontier out, its a no brainer, just like they did with each of the previous ones, they were just a fully boxed in frontier.
Nissan needs to get rid of the damn CVT on their cars period! Sure, they've gotten rid on it on some models like the Pathfinder but they need to redo their othr cars as well. Especially their lower tier aka affordable cars. Their bad reputation is damaged because of it and they still refuse to put it behind. As long as they have that reputation, they're not going to get ahead. I would also LOVE to see a Hybrid and/or a Turbo Pathfinder. They also need to build hybrid version of their affordable cars as well to rival Toyota. But NO CVT, not even Toyota CVT!
I like the idea of Nissan bringing back the Xterra if it’s based similarly to the current Frontier truck. I definitely do not like the Xterra that is currently in Europe right now. I don’t like the styling of it at all!
All they gotta do is take the original XTerra body and modernize it, drop in the Frontier V6 unless that goes away, give it a durable and rugged interior, and it’ll sell like hotcakes.
No, it does not Xterra and 4runner are body on frame passport is a unibody. Body on frame has true proper four-wheel-drive as an option. Where as the other one just has all-wheel-drive completely different animals. If you do a lot of outdoor activities, camping towing things like this get the body on frame SUVs if you don’t do any of that, then get the passport.
People talks like this thing was a 4Runner killer, even back in 2015,2016,2017 4Runner sold well over 300k unit while Xrerra less than 20k unit. Yall telling me Toyota is worried 😆 they both were v6’s. Numbers don’t lie.
If Nissan brings the XTerra back and keeps their naturally aspirated v6, the 4Runner will be toast.
"keeps their naturally aspirated v6"
by the time this is out, it probably won't have one. Plus even when they co-existed the 4runner still wasn't toast
@@chibbyylol because the 4Runner had a naturally aspirated v6 and even a v8 at one point

They don't even need to put too much effort or development into it. They could just carry over alot of the frontier engineering and switch gear. It'd be a massive win for nissan

Yes, always based on the Frontier. And low-trim and high-trim options. But not as long wheelbase as the 4-Runner.
And a very reasonable price. Sub 45k well equipped.
Cool news. Seeing the new Murano, Kicks, and Armada, I reckon Nissan can do a fabulous job on the new Xterra. What a way to start 2025.

Since Chevy is planning to discontinue the ICE Blazer just like Ford decided to discontinue the Edge after bringing back the Bronco, they should continue with the ICE Blazer but base it off the Colorado/ Canyon and maybe have a GMC Jimny version to get even more sales
middle east Xterra looks like what a Rogue should have looked like in 2018 when it was supposed to be refreshed.
I would like to see it in all-wheel drive not necessarily four wheel drive.. I owned two SEs and a pro 4X....
* 6 cyl or 8 cyl
* 2 monoscroll turbos
* Make the turbo plumbing small (or go from large to small and back to large). This bottle neck will lower the HP numbers for stock form
* Be receptive of aftermarket tuners who will bring back the desire in buyers of the brand!
2024 Ford Bronco Sport YTD sales of 126,789. Nissan would have a huge target to go after and the sales track record of the Xterra says: No Way!!
NA engine hydraulic steering and foot parking brake should cut the msrp
Just in time for the trend to change from off road back to street based.
Hopefully they put a V6; the way life intended it.
@mtnbound2764 you know that the next gen is going to be body on frame & V6? I never heard that.
@mtnbound2764 I'd say even though the 4Runner is BonF, the Passport will give it a run for the money with styling & n/a V6 over their 4cyl
@mtnbound2764 the only issue it will have is that it's a Nissan. Maybe with the big merger, Nissan will be able to get some reliability back.
Does the Passport compete with the Xterra and 4Runner?
Sort of.
Use the same V6 in the frontier and under cut the 4runner in price and pray for the best.
