  • I run my two engines head to head. Both were turning APC 11x6 props. Neither was really peaked out completely. Both turned over 11,000 RPM and idled well.

Early Enyas had an air bleed carb... and no midrange metering. So they would go rich coming off idle. But later Enyas had the air bleed for idle mixture, but there was internal metering from off idle through the midrange to high, where the spraybar metering was fully opened. Those carbs worked quite well. Also, Enyas run quite well on low or no nitro ("FAI") fuel, as they were designed. Enya 29's and 35's from the '60's-''70's came with two heads, one high compression, one low compression.

Fun fact. Enyas came to the USA without glo-plugs. Why? Because they were shipped as "broken toys", and had a lower Customs charge. No glo-plug, would not run, therefore broken. Many dealers would drop a plug in the box, but they did not come that way from MRC, the distributor at that time.

Thank you for sharing your experience with the Enya Engines. The SS40 should run stronger, but this engine has an iron piston that takes a long time to really break in and get top rpms.

The airbleed carb just takes a little to get used-to and set right. I spent a few hours figuring out the carb Idle mixture on my SS40BB one day in 1986.. Never touched it again after that. I flew that plane regularly from 1986 to about 1996-1997. Easy start / perfect idle / transition every time. I lived in Alabama / Georgia. Hot humid summers / some cold winter days.. I tweaked the high side accordingly but never touched the air screw in over 10 years.

It would be nice to have a 3-way comparison with the earlier Enya 40BBTV (non Schneurle) engine. BB = Ball bearings, TV = Throttle Valve.

I can’t decide which Enya I like better, the .40 SS OR THE .50 CX. I have had great success with both over the years.

Thank you for posting this great video David. I have a question, I got a Enya 45 SS Ringed and it seems to me that compression is low compare to a normal OS Max AX. Is that beacause is a ringed engine? It performs well still, even though it has many hours in service. It had already low compression when it was given to me. I have used it 2 years now. Do I still have Enya for a while or its about to go bad? Thank you and greetings from Mexico!! Alberto

A ringed engines compression really should not be compared to an ABC/ABN. ABC/ABN have much tighter pinch at the top..
