Wow that looked like you were both having such a great time, and seems very cost effective too given how like you say it’s essentially an overnight hotel and longish distance journey all in one. Much as I enjoy the Shinkansen I would definitely take a trip with Funeko given the chance, great summary thanks!
Yes, I still love the shinkansen, but it was fun option to do something a little different! It felt like a mini cruise - and a nice chance to slow down for the evening when we'd been walking around so much every other day.
I am so glad I discovered your channel ! I love these Japan travel videos, they are so helpful and packed full of good information 😁 As an avid traveler I know how daunting getting around / language barriers can seem but its videos like this that really help people make the wonderful decision to see other parts of the world !
Aww thanks so much, that's great to hear! I just remember how many questions I had before I first went to Japan! It was exciting but also quite intimidating.
Its the Sunflower now from Sapporo to Tokyo, now its 2 nights, when i did it it was just 1 night so I may have been on a different ferry. I was pretty tired and do not remember much
Thanks for the detailed trip report. This looks like a great option that many may not think about. If one has the time you could take that trip during the day as I hear the inland sea is suppose to be very scenic. Guess that is the only downside of traveling at night.😀⛴
Thanks for another keeper into my “Japan 2nd Trip” playlist! That looked like an excellent ferry trip. I liked the comparison of speed/cost vs a fast Shinkansen trip and then hotel costs. I can’t believe that I hadn’t thought of how the overnight ferry would take away the need for one night of hotel. This may definitely be a nice adventure on our next Japan trip.
This is the first time I'd thought of taking a ferry too! It was something different to do, and made for a relaxing evening - it gave our feet a rest as you can't walk for miles when you're on a ship! :-)
I’ve relocated three times in my career and I SOOOOOO get what you’re saying about standing at a bus stop with no idea if it’s the right one until the bus shows up!! 🤣
I really enjoyed this video, thanks a lot Amy ! The ferry looks really cool and there is so much there to see, eat and discover. It is however nothing for me, as I get extremely sea sick at the smallest wave.
Oh no! In general the ship was very stable but you could feel it a little sometimes. You wouldn't want to be stuck on a ship for 12 hours feeling rough.
Informative and well presented info as always Amy! I've always wanted to do one of the night ferries but haven't done so ye. Though things are looking good to fit one into my next trip in October 😎
Thanks for the very interesting video. I do want to try an overnight ferry the next time I'm in Japan. The ferry I want to do the most is the Ocean Tokyu one which is famous for having a lot of vending machines onboard.
Hi Amy, just wanted to point out that in the clip when you show the ferry tickets, Phil's full name is shown. Not sure if you both were wanting to keep that private or not, but figured I'd say something on the off chance you'd like to keep it private.
I'm not sure if you're supposed to or not, but I kept one of the little Funeko towels. My theory was that, when I last got a towel from a bath-house, it was a similar style and I was allowed to keep it. The police weren't waiting for me at the port, so hopefully it was ok! 🤞😅
@@fcsuper Usually when there are slippers in packets in hotels, they're "disposable" slippers that you can keep, but more heavy-duty looking slippers are owned by the hotel. They usually have a special slipper-cleaning machine!
@@cakeswithfaces Thank you for reply. 🙇 I've taken the Hankyu Ferry, too. 🤗 It wasn't a suite like yours. 😅 It was a big room with no partitions. 😓 But it was cheap, comfortable and fun. 😌
hi miss amy!! ive been rewatching a bunch of your videos for the past month or two just to get up to date with how Japans going right now and i want to thank you because theyre really informative :) also just wanted to ask,, what month do you think or recommend is the cheapest to travel there to? because my parents and i are planning to go to Japan in two years time for my 18th birthday. i did some research though and a lot of sources said that around february to early april would be the best, but my birthday is in august, so i am a bit concerned ;w; i hope you see this and thank you if you do for the help >< 💖
Thanks so much, so glad you've been enjoying my videos! :-) That sounds like a great plan for a birthday trip. It's tricky to say when it's cheapest to go - flights are the most expensive part and flight prices change so much. You'd probably get the best deal by booking when the airlines have a sale - join their email newsletters to get notifications about them. It'd be best to avoid the most popular times of year, which are cherry blossom season (end of March / first week of April - also a holiday in Japan), Golden Week (end of April/start of May), and autumn leaves time in November. August is very hot and humid, and peak typhoon season is July to September. If you don't mind the cold, February can be good, the first half of March, or mid April or May, or October.
Hi Amy! I have a question 😊 How many electronic items can you bring back from Japan to UK? What is the maximum price for electronic item allowed for which I’m exempt from paying any extra taxes when back in the UK? For example if I buy two consoles and both cost £500 in total will I pay an extra tax when taking them to the UK? If I buy one (new) electronic item for £1000 like an iPhone what’s the procedure of bringing it over to the UK? Thank you very much in advance 😊
I've never done that myself so I'm not 100% on this - but I haven't seen any limits on the number of electronic items you can buy. You'd probably be able to get them through tax-free shopping in Japan. I think customs in Japan when you leave is mainly concerned with the tax-free shopping scheme and making sure that's done correctly. You're not supposed to open or use anything bought tax-free until you leave Japan. However when you enter the UK, you may have to pay taxes on them then, as there's a limit of £390 for "other goods" for personal use: www.gov.uk/bringing-goods-into-uk-personal-use/arriving-in-Great-Britain However please check the official info as I'm no expert on this myself so can't really advise on what the actual rules are! I know lots of people buy rice cookers at the airport in Japan to take home! :-) Also, remember if you buy a phone, you won't be able to turn off the sound effect when you take photos - that's a law in Japan to stop people taking dodgy photos.
Just to say, there's also a slightly shorter route to Yokosuka takes 21 hours :) I'm thinking of doing it but various google searches I tried can't tell me if it operates in October so anyone with info on that is greatly appreciated :)
There's nothing saying it doesn't run in October - only that it doesn't run on Sundays and national holidays, although I haven't combed through their website: tqf.co.jp/en/
