@thelogicalcowboy He's fortunate & lucky. Also the $28M he won from the lottery was more than he ever made playing football. Imagine a LB returning a kickoff for a TD. That's freakish athletic ability in that size of an athlete.
I do believe the Cowboys' inability to reproduce anything like this quality at OLB was a key reason we kept falling short from 79 till 83 (that and the OL). What a player, and what a video yet again!

Another great video about a great figure in DC history. Hollywood was great to watch, and the plays he made were incredible. He just got on the wrong side of Coach Landry with his off the field antics and activities. Thanks for the memories LC and keep them coming!!!!
Thomas Henderson's biggest nemesis was Thomas Henderson. I wonder just how good he could have been if he had been able to conquer his demons. I have no doubt he would have been enshrined at Canton.
Great Video as always, LC! As I said in some previous comments, he grew up in Austin off and on and still is around here today. I met him a bunch of years ago when he was talking to some high schoolers and couldn't have been nicer. Wife ran into him while getting her vehicle inspected last year. I always wondered how those early 80s defenses could have been if things worked out. I'm thinking we could have won at least one of those three NFC Championship games with him around. Great video, once again!
@cjtexas9646 Wow! I have no doubt in my mind that we would have won if he was on the team. In fact I think Landry would have revolutionized the league because he would have used Hollywood in the 40 blitzing defense. Hollywood would have been a menace in that scheme.
Overshown reminds me of Thomas Henderson. The way he batted that ball, managed to run after and catch it, and then run it back for a touchdown was a feat of athleticism. On that play, I finally understood what the fuss was about him. I don't think Micah Parsons could have matched that.
Man i remember him as a youth. The speed of that man a that time was 2nd to none. A LB returning kickoffs, for TDs?!!? Insane and he was a hell of a LB, HOF talent. My cousin lives in Dallas and I asked him to find me a 56 Henderson jersey. Great video. How do you hit the lottery, twice? Ask Hollywood 🎉
Bro this is amazing! I loved Hollywood Henderson . . I clearly remember when he got that pick-6 against the Rams and did that goal post slamdunk. Wooooo

Next, Part 2. Henderson's decline, Landry trying to help him, getting fired, hitting bottom, and finally, redemption. He confirmed that Landry tried to help him, he just couldn't see it at the time.
Thanks, LC. Henderson was quite a talented and entertaining player. You showed some real nice highlights and some plays I hadn't seen before. I'm also interested in seeing Henderson during his stints with teams other than the Cowboys. It's difficult to spot him playing as an Oiler. I think he wore #53 for Houston and did not start, mainly playing on special teams for the few games he suited up for them. I think he also played in a preseason game or scrimmage for the Dolphins or 49ers at some point but I can't find my copy of his book to confirm.
@agesflow6815 First of all great callouts! In 1980 Henderson played the remainder of the season with the 49ers and Houston after he left Dallas. He actually had an interception in the last game of his career.
I Love that SB hit! Good video once again. Quick, hard hitting play maker. Why Henderson is still starting SLB on my All Time Cowboys team. For a while it looked like Micah Parsons might replace him some day, but....well....that's why I've got a rule against extrapolating or including active players on lists like that.
I think thenCowboys had two first round picks that year and selected Randy White first and then Henderson later in the first round. I think I remember reading that he was upset that the Cowboys didn’t want to pay him first round pick money because they told him Randy White is “technically “ the first round draft pick. Athletically and personality-wise, he would thrive in today’s NFL (and make those six figures!)
Wow! What a great look at one of the all-time "what if" stories of the NFL. He was one of my favorite players of all-time. I literally loved watching this guy play. Everyone in my area (WV) was pretty much Steeler fans as it was the closest NFL team to our state that was winning, you had Cleveland and Cincy, but everyone when I was in grade school loved the Steelers. Well, I hated the Steelers lol. Now, don't get me wrong, I have learned to have nothing but respect for the 70's Steeler teams that we battled and we got one back in 95 but we still owe them one lol. Those two teams really went at each other and I remember watching a video where the players were probably in their 50's by then and one of them said "If we see the Steelers to this day we want to go suit up" lol. Great matchup that produced, what I feel, was two of the most competitive Super Bowls in history. Much respect to those Steeler teams. However, I was a Cowboy fan from the get-go. I seem to remember there was a matchup with the Steelers where Hollywood laid about 3 monstrous tackles in that matchup and if I'm not mistaken knocked a player or two out of the game for a few plays, but I was a kid and not quite sure if that is accurate. I do remember he would make one or two plays every game that would just make you shake your head. If you were a Cowboys fan in the 70's you realize just how much Hollywood meant to the championship season of 77 and the Cowboys in general. He was so popular, until suddenly...he wasn't. We know his story and his recovery from addiction, but man, what an athlete and a great football player! At his best, he was as good of a linebacker as I have watched play in the NFL and that includes everyone. He was a beast!!! Sorry for my long-winded replies my friend. Yes'ir!!! It's about time. I know you wanted to say it. I know you did. Hollywood is the greatest linebacker bar none. If Tom Landry had treated him with kid gloves like Parcels did with LT instead of cutting him, the Cowboys would have definitely won those 3 NFC championship games in the 80s. I wish you had shown the highlight of him and Earl Campbell colliding. A true train wreck where neither would go backwards, only sideways.
Crazy that all of us Cowboys fans are here looking for a reason to keep going, Almost 50 years a fan of this once proud ,relevant, innovative, creative, trend setting , respected ,admired, copied and feared franchise. What Jerry has turned out Boys into is a joke , he 's so good at selling broken dreams. Every year around Thanksgiving we are the most talked about team, we'll pull off a couple wins and then the playoffs and sb talk starts we all buy into his bullshit and think this year is different. We have had a couple of teams a couple of years that could have had a legitimate chance to win against the best in the league. But the culture they've adopted is not one of hunger, desire and ambition it's one of laziness, coat tail riding and showboating. Every championship team we have had except maybe the 95 squad was hungry out to prove something and kicked people's asses. The '71 squad is the only one I never saw play. I challenge any fan or expert to dispute that Jerry has been the problem all along. He cares about the bottom line not those silver football trophies. I doubt we'll hoist another one in my lifetime. I've become disinfranchised and don't even watch the games anymore . I keep up with them read box scores. But I have gone from being shirtless painted blue and silver screaming for 4hours in Texas Stadium hoping to be seen on MNF to not wearing and cowboys gear in public. Sucks I hate it feel cheated by our chronic mediocracy. Dammit Jerry you've fucked us all you punk.
He's areason why I respect QBs and WRs in the past more than the ones these days....when it comes to STATS. They no longer have to worry about THOSE HITS. 75% of what is in this film is illegal today. You'd flaged fined and suspended for some of the hits you see here
Are you gonna breakdown Schottenheimer's system? Im waiting for that video I know you are gonna hit it out of the park and probably put some people at Cowboys nation at peace
Micah Parsons ought to watch the play from 4:08 to 4:48, and learn. Unlike many of today's players who hit with their shoulders, Henderson actually tackled. As a boy in the 70s, Cowboys players like Henderson made me a lifetime Cowboys fan. Great video.
@@thelogicalcowboy I get tired of watching Parsons and defense get steamrolled by the run. This happens especially in crucial games against tough opponents, and it happened with Quinn as defense coordinator as well.
Our supposed "dominant" defense that we have today is an absolute JOKE compared to the Cowboys of the 1970s. I don't mean any disrespect the players today, I'm just pointing out a brutal fact about how much more seriously this team was back in the day about perfecting their game.
Losing Henderson in during the 79' season and Cliff Harris at the end of the 79' season accelerated the demise of "Doomsday 2" as the Cowboy headed into the 80's.
What Might Have Been...#56 was clutch in the playoffs as well, with 3.5 sacks, 2 ints and a FF which resulted in two TDs in just 10 games. What other linebacker has returned a kickoff 48 yards in the Super Bowl? It wasn't a coincidence that the Cowboys went from a fading good team to a consistent great team after Henderson was drafted, making 3 Super Bowls in 4 seasons, and that their defense was never the same after he left. Just two full seasons as a starter in 1977 and 1978, with78 being a Pro Bowl season, but his 1979 season might have been even better if he'd been able to keep it together, rather than being cut after 10 games. (Which reminds me, WOW the Cowboys defense took some player personnel hits in the 1979 season: Ed "Too Tall" Jones retired to be a boxer, Jethro Pugh retires after 15 years, Charlie Waters missed the whole season with injury, and they lose Hollywood mid season!) It seems kind of crazy to say, but f I had to choose the Cowboys All-Time 4-3 defense, Hollywood Henderson would be one outside linebacker and Hall of Famer Chuck Howley would be the other.
Hollywood was basically LT, b4 LT.... Wasn't as big as LT, but was faster and even though LT also played ILB and was a 1st Team All Pro at Inside LB ( and OLB ) N 1983🤯😳 --- LT also played MLB on goal line .... but I would say Hollywood was even more versatile than LT
I think he’s a very fine person. I’m not ashamed to admit it, but I was at the same rehab. He went to. Who’s jersey adorns the main hallway. We used to walk past a piece of history every single day and the kids didn’t even know who he was. Lol I said, “just look at the number see if it rings a bell in your head“
@KevinFrame-b8r Bro that's what I'm here for! I have a few other videos under my belt. Once I knock them off I got you! If you got any other requests let me know.
R.I.P Rickey Bell (USC/TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS) 💪🏿. Dewayne "Hollywood" Henderson And Eugene "The Hitting Machine" Lockhart Were Dumb Talented LB's!!! They Did It All 👊🏿.
Could've been a Hall of Famer if he stayed out of trouble. Maybe he could've been a pro wrestler with his personality. Good he eventually got himself right
He was a lot of fun. You didn't even show some of his best plays--like stripping the ball from Terry Bradshaw and scoring a TD in the Superbowl. Too bad he got caught up in the lifestyle. I sure felt bad for Mike Hegman when he was forced to replace him. (I assume you never saw these Cowboys live--but you sure do understand them. I wish you could have been a fan back in the day.)
@@thelogicalcowboyI'm so old, I remember watching the Ice Bowl as a little kid--That's how long I've been watching the Cowboys. If you saw the Jimmy Johnson Cowboys, you saw the best team they ever had. Too bad they couldn't have hung on Jimmy a while longer.
I enjoyed his book he tells a. Story about riding in the car with Richard Pryor going excess 100 miles an hour and Richard cutting up cocaine while driving
No mention of how a severe drug addiction short-circuited his career. Sadly, he never reached his true potential. There were better outside linebackers during his era.
Hollywood said after Landry cut him that Dallas wouldn't be back in the Super Bowl without him and he was right. He may have self destructed if Dallas kept him, we know he did with Houston and Miami and the broken neck and prison resulting arrest, but if by some chance staying in Dallas would have allowed him to continue as he was, drug using but still productive, there is NO WAY they don't win at least one of those 3 straight NFC Championship games they lost from 80-82. Parcells was smart enough to be a hard a$$ coach but still overlook LT's disruptive drug fueled lifestyle. Landry wasn't, and it more than likely cost him at least one Super Bowl title, possibly even two or 3.
Here’s something notable: Yes, he was attention seeking and flamboyant. Outside of the lines. Now try to find ONE time where he celebrated with any kind of “look at me” celebration or gesture after he made a great play. You know, the kind of crap that’s ubiquitous in today’s game. Simply, he didn’t do it. He was just great and he knew that he was part of a team effort. He was a remarkable player.

He was outstanding! Clean hitting!! On most!

On most! Lol

@@bigred9991
Yep. But a higher ceiling. His ability to cover was probably his greatest strength!
Hollywood was much more PHYSICAL than Micah.... Micah doesn't want a damn thing to do against the run... only thing he wants to do is rush the passer
More like Lawrence Taylor before LT was LT. I'd pick Henderson over Micah anytime.

Facts!
@thelogicalcowboy And he was a FIRST ROUND PICK
(Which reminds me, WOW the Cowboys defense took some player personnel hits in the 1979 season: Ed "Too Tall" Jones retired to be a boxer, Jethro Pugh retires after 15 years, Charlie Waters missed the whole season with injury, and they lose Hollywood mid season!)
It seems kind of crazy to say, but f I had to choose the Cowboys All-Time 4-3 defense, Hollywood Henderson would be one outside linebacker and Hall of Famer Chuck Howley would be the other.
@davidhickey1830
Howley the goat Cowboys linebacker with Hollywood would be special! Bro Great post as always!!!!

He was a lot of fun. You didn't even show some of his best plays--like stripping the ball from Terry Bradshaw and scoring a TD in the Superbowl. Too bad he got caught up in the lifestyle.
