      My total nightmare! My Boxer absolutely amazed me once. The neighbor’s 2 dogs slipped leash and headed straight to attack her. She is actually fairly reactive, and upon seeing them even out I had reversed direction. But she was the best dog and when I said no! she stood still. The owner quickly retrieved them, no injuries. But my Sage did look at me with a look of betrayal, mom why do I have to let these pesky things gnaw on me. I gave her lots of loves and cuddles after. But after a couple of scary incidents at my local park I stopped walking her, she has a huge yard where she can run wild now. At the time of the dog incident we lived in a townhouse, and I needed to take her on several long walks a day.

    I have 3 intact gsds , 2 males 1 fem. my oldest male is from a single pup litter , while raising him I failed to remember this an probably let things slide that I shouldnt have. They are not dog aggressive but my oldest makes me look a fool in public with his screaming when he sees other dogs, He meets them very boldly an I believe it would be a fight if he met one that called him out on his rudeness. Thank you I am glad I found you.

    The Spaniel is doing exactly to the Shep, what my new young pup is doing to our established dog. I try my best to stop it, especially when I see him trying to evade her. I'm guessing he has some territorialness with her & other dogs. She plays the game submissive & comes back bitey. She's a jumper. Great vid. Can't wait for the second piece!

    I have 5 dogs (1 is a Blue Nose Pit the other half pit and half lab both are 97lbs), 3 of them were found on the street with no collors and no microchipped. We also feed or have found a rescue to take the dogs that are living on the street so we had to have all of ours fixed so they would be less aggressive and no suprise puppies. There was one time you yelled "Hey" that scared the poop out of me. I actually jumped, thanfully my patient didn't see, lol. I watch your video's all the time, even at work, I just learn so much.

    This is great timing for me. I just got my gentle leader today and am conditioning it. My 16mo old pit is a great player. He does great at dog parks and goes to daycare once a week..... but you put the leash on him and walk him around our neighborhood, he erupts and lunges at every single leashed dog he sees. People, Loose dogs, and cat are no problem at all despite him being on a leash.
    He's been hitting the end of the leash with a pop for weeks and he's unfazed. It's literally the only time he ever leaves me. I'm now employing the gentle leader, we're going to get this fixed.
    I already know, I'm a big problem with it because I've been tensing up as it seems to get worse. I'm going back to giving him his full leash and he's getting the pop when he leaves me, lunge or not.

      Don’t know if you’ve watched Joel’s video with the woman walking her own Great Dane. In my experience (and in that other video), the BEST thing to do is to do a bunch of proactive stops and/or turns. I have always had the most luck with dogs that don’t care about a correction by turning around and walking the other way as soon as they stop paying attention to where I am walking. The good thing about the correction with a turn is it throws the dog off balance which, with the pop correction really helps grab their attention.

    • @pmlm1571
      @pmlm1571 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@SixString_J5 Good plan. I find the Gentle Leader is helping me with my dog's bad reactivity (which is on and off leash towards all dogs loose or otherwise, so in that respect your dog seems less badly behaved than mine). But the G.L. is no silver bullet for me, and my dog like yours, it seems, also is unphased by the snaps and knee flips, that is, though so far I always win in the end, it's always a battle, nothing sticks, we seem to have reached a plateau. True, my corrections are not so well timed or so clean as Joel's.

    One of my dogs is reactive to sprinkler heads when they are on. On our walk yesterday, walking past a public landscaped area, the sprinklers were on, and my dog lunged. Wearing a gentle leader (Halti, actually), he got a leash pop. And another. And another. We stayed there until the sprinklers turned off because, while I saw some improvement, he did continue lunging, but with more time in between lunges. My thought is that I need to continue exposing him to this and using this method until sprinklers mean nothing to him while he’s on a leash. Watching these videos is so helpful to me. I’m using the same method with him when he exhibits the same behavior towards lawn equipment being used while we’re out walking. He’s very reactive to a bunch of things (bicycles, motorcycles), and I feel like I need to somehow desensitize him by finding ways to expose him to these things more and using this method when he reacts…until he doesn’t anymore.

    • @hilja33
      @hilja33 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I feel you, my Kelpie was reactive to everything that moved. Cars,(then after we fixed that it was cars at night 🙄) vacuum cleaners, bikes,scooters, skateboards, kids, brooms, joggers, lawnmowers. Now it’s just people, joggers and lawnmowers! 14 months old it’s a long process to desensitise. Found out recorders being played set him off, needed to spent 10 mins to teach him to lie down and chill when he heard it. 😂 complete opposite to my previous dog - pit bull who was a prince type dog

      to anyone reading this, take your dog out on a hot day, long brisk walk or jog, then turn the sprinklers on so it can get a drink of water and cool off. It'll completely change the purpose of sprinklers to your dog.

    The sister dog, needs correction on several issues. The issues of the sister dog inevitably creates a negative demeanor within the Shepard. The Shepard is annoyed at sister dog and creates frustration. I find it odd the Shepard wont school the sister dog. The Shepard has a hard time finding a calm sense within himself and his surroundings, because the sister creates busy havoc. Once the sister changes its annoying behavior, the Shepard will have more success in changing bad behavior and actually enjoy life with those (dogs or humans) around him.. You asked for my option. lol... it may not be correct from my evaluation of this video.. but I do see with proper training for BOTH dogs, they will become amazing, well adapted dogs in the future. Once again Mr. Wonderdog Beckman... Amazing work... my hats off to you and Prince :)

    • @lorianderson8145
      @lorianderson8145 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also notice something odd about the sister dog walking right into the leash. Video time stamp @ 3:39 ... even though the leash line is right in front of her, she still walks right into it, as if she didn't see it.. but at her age she would have avoided it... So, I do find that extremely odd...

    That owner did so well. He has two rather challenging dogs. His and his dogs' lives will be all the better now that he has this analysis and advice and demonstration. P.S. This is my third day using the Gentle Leader and it does indeed give significantly more control than flat collar: I am a convert to it. But the small clasp is plastic and I worry that it might break: my dog is 70 lbs and she really goes at other dogs. This morning it was multiple snap backs for just one passing trigger dog.

    • @solideomusical
      @solideomusical 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same concern here. Perhaps a choke chain for backup? It could go around the dog's neck and then you connect the ring to your leash. I am considering using 'Mexican Halti' again (Cesar Millan uses this) where you take a simple slip lead, form a loop with a half twist and put that over the dog's nose. It works extremely well and has no moving parts, snaps, buckles or other points of failure. It also gives you complete control of the dog's head.

    • @chelsea1364ful

      You could secure your Gentle Leader by clipping it to another collar on you dog. I have a 92LB GSD/husky mix and it’s been great as a back up plan.

    • @solideomusical
      @solideomusical 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just checked mine on my dog. The only way it makes sense to me is if you attach something between the metal ring (where you attach the leash) and a flat collar or choke chain. If you attach it to the strap that comes up around the dog's neck and the buckle fails your dog will get loose. Otherwise it is just the illusion of security.

    • @pmlm1571
      @pmlm1571 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@solideomusical I see what you mean. The Gentle Leader ring--where the leash attaches--is small and cramming another snap (from a coupler) there alongside the leash snap seems crowded and fiddly. Also in the scenario it means one is connecting to the dog via the now-broken GL, which is changing its shape as the nose loop reverses itself--too many variables and dog may get to the other dog before the connection whips off and straightens out. That's why I would prefer a ring built into the snap end of the leash itself where the coupler (connecting to the backup collar) could attach. Can't find such a leash online yet. if this makes sense.

    I think the German Shepherd is protective of the little dog. If you go back and watch, the German Shepherd would be fine towards the other dogs in the middle/end of the video, but as soon as that little dog came running around then the German Shepherd would react at Prince or Johnjohn. Also, the patience the German Shepherd has with the little dog is amazing, and shows a special bond.

    Regarding spaying & neutering...
    That's another risk vs benefit subject! Adjust accordingly.
    I've been on the rescue side of things and sadly a large majority of people can't responsibly own intact animals. In allopathic vet medicine we were always taught (w/o evidence) to repeat that it's healthier (insert list of reasons) to alter the dog. But there is Evidence to the contrary. It should be a fully educated decision on the owner's part.
    My current dog is intact for health reasons.
    The part I don't understand is why people feel it's inhumane to alter animals!?!? Are they out there correcting the massive overpopulation problem, because that is the bigger issue that causes suffering. Start there, fix that, then you might have a case!

    Another good video Joel. I'm starting to feel sorry for Prince though. He's a very good gentle boy and he's enduring a string of aggro dogs trying to start a fight with him. But if it came to a serious dog fight I'd put my money on Prince :)

    Those first corrections changed the black GS's life completely! He was flabbergasted for most of the video. " ...he never knew what hit him..." It took ages for him to come back to his " normal".

    These videos are so informative. Can you tell me what make of gentle leader you use? At the moment I use a Halti but I’m not able to use that with the Baskerville muzzle. Thank you.

    I have a high drive Black GSD who I work. He is reactive not aggressive towards other dogs. I have always used a prong collar because he is so strong. My corrections may seem adverse but they work; however, others see the prong collars as not humane, but it is better than a choker. Do you use prong collars also. I have never tried a gentle leader.

    Hi Joel, I have a rescue dog, mixed breed his like miniature rottweiler (rottweiler mixed terrier of some sort) his dog aggressive to almost every dog, I've brought a gentle leader and a muzzle, I totally agree with your methods as positive reinforcement has only took him so far.. my question is that my dog will continuously go to attack another dog even when I do the 'pop' how do I correct this? Do I back off until he stops lunging or?? I have managed to meet another big dog which he doesn't like but tolerates, if the comes close to him he gets a look in his eye and snaps too, should I just do the yell and chase him as the correction for this? Hope you can get back to me regarding this and thank you for all your videos keep up the good work👍 🐕

    I prefer the east German version of our dogs here in Germany. They are more healthy.
    I love your videos your sessions are so intense. The health topic isn't the issue in your session I get that.

    Is there a reason why some dogs don't like unneutered dogs? And is it more dominant dogs that are more bothered by it?

    Hey Beckman! So I have a question, when my German Shepard dog is on the gentle leader he tends to fight it occasionally while on walks. Normally this isn't too bad, but the problem comes from when he stops dead in his tracks and lies down and refuses to get up. I can't get him to continue without dropping his leash and pretending to leave him. I try to pull or pop and it just makes him double down and lie on his side and just let himself get dragged. Is there anything I can do to combat this? Or have you seen behavior like this before?

    When you have a dog that is way stronger than you how do you keep them from just jerking you forward when they have that much strength heading forward. I have to correct mine from 2 ft because if he gets any more forward motion than that even going the other way he just jerks me off my feet. I don't really have the problem any more we have used a prong with the close correction but in the future maybe for another dog how can you compensate for that.

    Is it important for dogs to meet other dogs? My dog is reactive toward other dogs and the trainer I'm working with (I would work with you Joel but I am very far from you!!) tells me that, "your dog doesn't need dog friends." However, I feel that if he could learn to have positive encounters with other dogs it could help with his reactivity. Thoughts?

    i've had dogs still able to bite (and hold) through those plastic muzzles, and one time my finger slipped into the muzzle while breaking up a dog fight and it was like taking scissors across my index finger, right between the premolars and molars, sliced right through except the bone. After that i didn't leave a dog unsupervised with the muzzle on.

    Have you seen any issues with having an intact and neutered dog in the same house? I have two male Dobermans 3 and 5 months. I plan on neutering the puppy not the older one. As the breed can sometimes show same sex aggression. Could neutering one contribute to that?

  • @joshuahoover
    @joshuahoover 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    There are local laws in some places that have restrictions on intact dogs in dog parks. I've seen lots of issues at dog parks between neutered and intact dogs. Not saying that's right, but it's quite common.
    Also, dog parks are generally awful. Like prison yards with the worst wardens - us owners. 😅

    No disrespect but I’m looking at the owner‘s shoes and thinking ouch!!! The only dog I’d walk in a pair of shoes like that is one that is very well trained and connected with me like a dog that I could walk off leash that has 100% recall and no issues.
    Or a stuffed animal😆
