    With FSD sometimes it feels like there are two conversations going on. If we are talking about a system that you watch over but it mainly drives itself with an occasional intervention, then yes it is getting better and better.
    If we are talking about being able to get rid of the driver and throw out the human controls, not only are we not there, but the path to get there is not entirely clear.

    I drove 110 miles yesterday on FSD. Couldn't believe how much better it is. Not even once did I have to intervene. I now gives you the choice of letting the car chose the speed depending on road conditions. It was driving safer than anyone around me. My only concern is bad weather, especially ice. Can it ever handle that as well as a human? Nevertheless, it is certainly reading for autonomous driving in warm climates.

    I have been using FSD ever since I was an early beta tester for it. Have had version 12 for weeks now and the improvements are quite noticeable. It's cool to see it dodge around water puddles. Normally, I have had to brake the car down to a crawl to prevent being jarred hard by a dip in the road pavement near my in-laws' house, but now it does that on its own without my touching the brake! It's been automatically slowing down for speed humps for months even before version 12.

I'm not sure how much that stuff is worth until it can drive unsupervised. Until then it should be free. Even if self driving can get from point to point it doesn't do some of the things humans do like avoid small tire hazards, pot holes, trucks throwing rocks at your windshield, or just hauling stuff not tied down well. I do all that stuff to protect my car and myself.

    Thanks Sam .. great captivating content. I am starting to think it is becoming very tempting to set the stage purposely and see what FSD does .. throw a cardboard box out in front, have a person walk in the middle of the street and then jump out in front of you coming up, have a dog race across the road, have a truck drop a ladder off the back … someone should purposely create some edge cases!! What happens you start purposefully covering some of the cameras to simulate mud, purposefully covering the interior camera or purposefully do some weird hand body motions or abruptly open a car door … on and on … throw a bucket (like a splash) of water across the drivers’ windshield. Why not setup a competition to who comes up with the best crazy situation!! Challenge FSD on purpose!!! Why not put up a sign saying accident up ahead, take another route and see what FSD does .. the more ridiculous the better .. it’s time to have fun 😮😅 How will it react to sounds and gestures. Fire trucks … Will it pull over and let it pass. What if a car purposefully stops in front and puts hazard blinking lights on …. 🎉🎉🎉 It’s time to create the edge cases instead of waiting for them to happen.

    Thought I would toss in a random thought - if a significant number of cars on the road were running Tesla software then perhaps traffic flow shaping at both a macro (satnav choosing route) and micro (cars cooperating better on the road together) whether as an intentional or emergent behaviour (perhaps a Tesla trip has goals that need to be fulfilled and making the journey in the shortest time without sacrificing safety is one of them) might be possible or even already occurring, resulting in optimised flow and people's journeys becoming faster and more consistent ? I wonder if anyone has given this any thought ?

    • @BlackBuck777

      Tipping point could occur when manufacturers agree to share data. Might take time but meanwhile Tesla has first mover advantage and huge data collection.

    • @julesgosnell9791
      @julesgosnell9791 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@BlackBuck777 Traditionally human drivers communicate (and therefore cooperate) via very limited standard bandwidth (basically indicators/hazard and brake-lights) augmented with a few non-standard extensions (flashing your lights, waving and other "gestures") - there are very few things you can say unambiguously and you cannot accompany each message with any real detail. Autonomous cars could broadcast a wealth of information in real-time to their local surroundings detailing their current and future state and intentions enabling much more sophisticated coordination than e.g. traffic lights (I wonder how efficient traffic lights are in terms of wasted driver time?) and maybe even roundabouts... - if you allowed synchronous message exchanges between cars you could literally have two lines of traffic crossing at near to full speed without issue....

    • @vermontsownboy6957
      @vermontsownboy6957 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I've thought the very same thing. It would make perfect sense that Teslas are communicating at least their local intentions to other local cars (within 100'? 500'?) to increase safety. But the idea of cars knowing each other's navigation for efficient route planning seems like an easy, low hanging fruit to decrease congestion and increase efficient mass movement flow. All the more useful when planning robotaxi routes or autonomous ride hailing.

    • @julesgosnell9791
      @julesgosnell9791 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I've thought some more about this - from watching videos of FSD you can see that Teslas have a realtime model of the vehicles surrounding them. If they were aware of which of these were Teslas then, in cases where there were no non-Teslas in the vicinity they could promote their behaviour to high-bandwidth-cooperative-mode (HB), as soon as a non-Tesla entered the space all the Teslas could drop back down to low-bandwidth-human-mode (LB).... HB might allow you to drive faster (speed limits are set with human reflex times in mind), ignore traffic lights (because all the cars have already agreed who goes when), pull out more swiftly and safely (because this would be coordinated by all participants) etc... You would need changes to the law but then these will be needed before FSD can become non-Supervised anyway - this tech will disrupt driving and lawmakers will have to adapt or their country's economies will not benefit as much as they might from cutting everyone's commute time. - When I say Tesla here, I really mean any vehicle participating in what should really be an Open, vendor-neutral protocol.

It's a neat trick but what is the point that is worth the price?

I shut it off after the second time it did that and never bothered with it again. Freebie time expired with no attention. I bought a Tesla for the single feature of "HOLD" (otherwise known as one-pedal driving). I describe myself as the quintessential driver. I drive the auto. The idea of the auto driving me is the most abhorrent idea ever. Can FSD monitor the opposite side of the highway watching for drunk drivers and Police chases, can FSD realize a truck is about to drop it's load, if not I would have been dead had I have been relying on it.

I’m looking for 48V architect (to stay ahead of obsolescence) and longer range. In addition, no way would I buy a Y now when 3 is so much better and less expensive. No offense, but assuming you can charge at home, any extra range is almost never needed. I put 24k miles on my Y last year and other than the long trips, I had to stop and charge 2 times last year. Both of those times were for less than 5 minutes. I just checked and the last time I used a supercharger was July 15th, 2023. So going on 9 months and just over 13,000 miles in that timeframe without having to charge anywhere but home charging. Extra range is seldom needed. the ability to hold 250 kwh charging rate would be a greater help for trips vs more range, In my opinion.

    When FSD gets regulatory approval as a fully autonomous system, legislators will require a transfer of legal liabilities from drivers to Tesla. The driver will no longer be liable for property damage, injuries, and fatalities when FSD is active. It's easy for me to say that it's priced way, WAY too high, just because I personally find it so (hypocritically, I bought the "FSD" feature in 2020 for $8K, mostly out of a bucket-list-ish spirit of adventure). Most of the reviewers I've seen, though, do seem to share the "nice but no thanks at that price" opinion of the feature. Tesla's determined to go on including the hardware in every vehicle they build, and the per-unit cost of the software is essentially zero, so the total revenue they derive as a function of the price they charge will be interesting, even without going into the question of how strongly the FSD price will influence sales of the vehicles themselves. Or whether vehicle insurance premiums (from Tesla, anyway) will vary according to how FSD is used.

      FSD uptake will be slower than expected because Elon has managed to piss off a large section of his own early adopters.
      It's indeed overpriced as is, but with Dojo online now and the company not being compute constrained anymore, they will make rapid progress from now on. I always reckoned about 18 months after Dojo started to contribute would be the day, but honestly it seems to be improving faster than that estimate allowed for.
      Once they stop being greedy on the pricing it will go wide really quickly. He's making the same mistake with Starlink in Africa, far too expensive as is, but would completely dominate if he dropped the price by about 20%.
      I believe the Robot will come much quicker than we all think, its going to be hand in glove with FSD because so much of what they are doing relates to both projects. It only needs to be useful in Giga factories to make an enormous contribution to the bottom line. Your convincing butler / handyman / office clerk / sex worker Robot is still miles away.
      The problem on the horizon nobody talks about is how will Government / Society react to Robots taking jobs in factories. I am not convinced Elon is the best man for the job of easing the way through the inevitable battle ahead, I have a feeling he'll manage to pick a fight with everyone from the off.
      Tesla needs a Glynne Shotwell clone to help him out and deal with the work to come, someone who can tell him when to bite his tongue or when to put his suit on and he'll listen.

    I've owned tesla stock for a few year now and don't plan to sell, but the drop in price has me concerned. I'm glad the analysts have finally figured out the potential of FSD, Tesla's charging network, and energy storage business can be worth more than their car and truck business. Tesla is a Technology company that also sells cars and trucks, not the reverse.

    That is nothing new last September Morgan Stanley argued of Tesla's market value $500 billion was because of its Dojo supercomputer AI and Robotics, not the car manufacturing business. In light of the poor Q1 results a number of analysts are arguing the Tesla’s fast coming to a fork in the road, between the Hardware and Software technology business and car manufacturing.

    People seem to be interested in self driving and many evidently really like it. I didn’t know it cost a subscription fee. I can see that driving has become bone numbingly boring since I got my license in 1958. That licence meant personal autonomy, but today people probably value features, convenience and safety more. Clearly Musk thinks it is time to push the technology by mandating demos of the technology to customers. I’ll say this - self driving cars are a fundamentally different type of transportation device from driver controlled cars.

      In truth, there is only one solution to 100% safe driving (or any activity). You have to ban it!! So now we have dispelled that notion... The question becomes a more informed... What is the safest way forward. How much safer than human driving must FSD be before it is accepted. Put on any number you want.... But clearly 100% safe is so impossible it has to be set aside. You might call me a pedant on the 100% safe issue but often considering and dispelling the extreme case enables a more informed and honest debate to flourish.
