I wish I would have gotten to go to a high school like this when I was a kid. I learned so much from this video that I wish I would have heard years ago.
After years of suggesting that not being able to draw a straight line was simply 1 of the things I can't really do, this video appears, and 5 minutes later, I can now do it...Unbelievable, lol.
"And like I say kids, it's ALL Bullshit" God I learned so much from this. Not just about comics but fucking life. Cheers Mr.Neal Adams! P.S. I was "that girl" with the beret
if i had been fortunate enough to have gone to a school like that, i think my life would have been very different. my school undervalued and discouraged art... lucky kids
Learned more about bettering my line work from this than any of my art classes

Wow, I have enjoyed like if I was there. Thanks a lot for recording it. Smart, adorable, fun... I am speechless .Even when he hasn’t inked anything completely, I was learning listening him.
Thank you for this! I draw all my life more than 30 years from art school till storyboard artist for now. And no anybody teaches me like this. The students is lucky! ❤ I’m 39 years old and already have problem with my hand, I feel pain after draw last few month.
I did a couple of storyboard jobs for Neal's Continuity Graohics in Burbank CA back in 1988. He was great to work for, real confident, decisive and direct with instructions. He looked like a superhero bodybuilder in those days.
Funny as f..k, I love the honesty of our generations, yes we ain't quite designed for the classroom environment, but the point is made, bless ya, well done sir. X
@@JohnDoe-zo8wj Ah correct, the class was given the Pentels (brush pens or ballpoint with refillable ink), not sure what he was using but I don't think it was anything special or fancy.
"Your body is made to do art....all your bones & everything that works up here is made to do art. You just have to learn how to use it." (31:10) "It's amazing the delicacy you can have with this instrument [the hand].....God has given you the greatest possible instrument you can ever have, to do artwork, & that's this delicate thing." (26:11) "Look to the past for your skills & build your skills forward, rather than ignore them & let them drop." (33:48) "That's how you get Adam Hughes [etc]....they get to be the best guys because they study the past." (34:20) Wow! This was such fun! What a character! You can see how THIS was the one who stood up to the big comics companies & led the fight for artists rights to their own work etc. I wish he'd toned down the language, especially for the school class, but an inspiring encouragement all the same. I wish i could have been there! 😏
16:58 computers are not stupid. Respect the guy, but that made him seem like a dinosaur. There are pro and cons to both digital and traditional. I know this is about comics, but for animating, no one animates on paper anymore, it's too inefficient. This is one way computers aren't dumb. I know he meant, computer doesn't make you draw better. 23:42 no one inks on cells anymore. we use computers. LOL but computers are dumb. "i can get twice a much work done with a pen than dipping." student aks, "How do you get grey tones" "Use a brush." I just thought it was funny, when he was bragging about how much better a pen was, I was just thinking some people use dip pens and brushes for grey tones, that you can't get with.a pen. Just saying. Again, pros and cons to each. Thanks showing how to hold the pen correctly and the Mr. Yang (sp?) story. It really made me smile. Along with the cultural difference of western and eastern, and white culture difference with the handball story. BTW art isn't always about reselling for more money, but I heard him out, the original if done traditionally is worth more than digital. I tend to see his stuff on Heritage Auctions, a lot so that is a plus compared to digital work. Cool and lucky students. Wonder how many will go to SVA,
I agree with you on these points. Traditional is best but not cost effective for Animation. I've been working at animation studios for years, and every studio has switched to digital for a reason. BTW he is able to sell commissions and original artwork at a high price point because he is one of the legends in the industry. Not every artist has the luxury of being able to sell their traditional work for the rates he mentioned in the video. In theses cases digital prints from computers make it affordable for the buyers, and can make a new artist a decent amount of income. One last note at the FanExpo I attended he was selling digital prints of his artwork.... you can't say computers are dumb if they're bringing you extra income ;)
Actually computers ARE stupid,. ie; they are an INSTRUMENT, like any instrument they are inherently inert. The artists input can use the computer, or pen or pencil to MAKE something clever, but the objects themselves remain, in effect, "stupid", until the human mind influences them. Neal is spot on. The computer is just a tool, which he was perfectly willing to use, as he admits, but he was concerned that they might be used as "shortcuts" to artistic success. He was not, therefore, contradicting himself at 23:42 at all.
Do they even comprehend what a one in a million, once in a life time opportunity they are getting?
no
That kid in the back taking this lesson to heart.
14:21 Girl "Its just so inspiring...wow!!
Neal: "well its supposed to be I'm fucking Neal Adams"
BEST LINE EVERRRRR!!

He muttered it low for the kids, too! Precious
These kids have no idea the legend that sat before them.
I was thinking the exact same thing.

@@NerdNewsToday Why thank you
👍😃
Adams was truly the frikin Best.
I was hoping one of the students in this video would talk about their experience with Neal Adams haha
no joke.. just practiced the straight line with Neal's technique..and drew five perfect straight lines... insane. I've been drawing my whole life.
16:00 The best explanation of why someone doesn't draw on the computer!

HOLY MOLY, to be in such a small class with such a master teaching so well??? Life-changing.
One of the best in comics. He will be missed

Mesmerizing
Watched it. Thank you Mr. Adams. I am a man in my sixites and I probably got even more out of your talk than those wonderful kids did.
When a master speaks we must pay atention
its like listening to the kung fu master of drawing nerds

Luckiest kids in the world. Getting art lessons from Neal Adams.
So true very lucky 💕
Lucky would be finding money hidden in the walls of their home from a bank robbery by the previous home owner ?
@@kcsnipes Well, that too.

good advice i'm gonna practice this method
Inspirational great teacher
I would have killed to end up in a school like this where they appreciated and nourished the love for art
So wise! Thanks Mr. Adams!
He would have been a great teacher .. and must have been a perfect grandfather.
Besides being such a legend, look at that head of hair!
Sir you are an inspiration to us all thank you for advice and sense xxx
What a great guy! True legend.
So, that girl did the impossible, she took a free autograph of Neal Adams

Thanks neal
Where was this years ago?!
I have always done this naturally just thought everyone did as well.
Nice!
Thank you; great advise.
Dude is a gem.
Wow thanks neal, rest in peace sir
No wonder I've had such a hard time with the way I ink. I always rested my pens on my knuckle
Holy shit thank you!
thanks for sharing :) btw girl on the background looks cute XD
that example he made of making money with traditional work against digital reminded me of nfts and i felt a little sick lol
Can anyone recommend any place to get large practice sheets like they have?
I got mine cheap on ebay to trace comics
It would’ve been hilarious if he farted when they were grabbing his fingers.
What school is this
..wish someone had told me as a kid how to hold a fkn pencil correctly! He was right!!!!
any one able to tell what kind of pen Adams is using in this video?
It was a refillable pentel brush pen. Nothing fancy, he was using the exact same pen everyone in attendance was given that day.

I wonder what he thinks about A.I. stealing artwork online?
that is pure trash ofc, what else can a real artist think of AI in art, in general?
