  • Ismael Vargas, all the way imported from Costa Rica, shows you how to prune the water growth and suckers from a Mandarin tree. Some branches are cut short to fit the canopy and some suckers are removed entirely. Watch as he quickly makes decisions on which branches to prune. As he is pruning he is thinking of symmetry, keeping the tree balanced.
Instead of big companies who use big machines to cut the trees flat, in residential areas, Ismael likes to open the trees up and thin them out. This keeps the tree the right size for where its growing.
You will see other citrus trees and even a papaya that's pruned to be the right size for the space its in, allowing the customer to walk near it and harvest the fruit easily.
Be sure to cut the branches at the neck of the branch or the ridge of the branch. If you can't, cut the stem right by a leaf.
When you look in the tree, you should see that the branches are open and that sunlight can come through. The carbohydrates activate, sun radiates and gases are exchanged and the tree is going to produce fruit inside and grow healthier!

So the water suckers you let on will the produce the same fruit?

    • @VargasLandscapingPresents

Yes, but we need to select the water growth and they will produce the same as the horizontal branches. Genetically they are the same as the other branches on the tree.

Hola from Azerbaijan. How do you choose which branch to cut? On which branches does citrus tree fruit?

You should follow the major principles of pruning. Doesn’t matter the size of the tree or species. If it’s a shrub or ground cover, follow the main principles of pruning: remove dead materials, remove crossing branches - from point a to point b across the canopy of the tree

…Remove water growth and the longer branches around the canopy of the tree. To do that you will improve the canopy of your mandarin and all citrus trees.

When is best time of year to prune any citrus tree? Thank you pura vida!

Hello! It can be depending of the location but in Southern California, the best time to prune citrus trees is early spring before it gets too hot. You should have time to harvest your winter crop by then too. During the year you can prune a little if you need to. Even cutting flowers is okay if the tree needs to have suckers and dead branches removed.
