Gixie Clock: Redemption

  • I've received the all-new re-engineered replacement for my Gixie Clock - here's a full review.
The Gixie is a digital clock that displays time using six removable glass tubes containing etched acrylic panels edge-lit by multicolour LEDs.
The Gixie Clock is available from www.indiegogo.com/projects/gi... (this is not an affiliated link)
FULL DISCLOSURE: The two boxed clocks seen in this video were sent to me for free (other than £18 duty and handling fees I paid the courier at the door - well I gave him £20 because I didn't have any change and neither did he). I have not been paid to make this video. I am not on commission. The people who sent it over said it was up to me whether or not I made a video, but they just wanted me to see the updated one anyway. I’m not sure whether it counts as a Paid Promotion because I got a free clock (but I’ve ticked the Paid Promotion box to be on the safe side) - I'll be giving the new spare one away and the other one is a replacement for my broken original that I paid for. It's up to you to make your mind up if you think this video is honest or not - but whether or not you buy a clock doesn't matter one jot to me.
    PFAQ (Predicted FAQ)
    Q) Why is there a picture of a cheese sandwich on screen at the beginning?
    A) A while ago on Patreon I coined the phrase ‘A cheese sandwich video’ to describe a simple video that’s exactly what it is and nothing more - just like a cheese sandwich is a sandwich containing cheese.
A cheese sandwich video is simpler video that doesn’t take weeks to assemble. It’s usually a brief demonstration of one item.
If you see a cheese sandwich image pop up at the start of a video - it's a sign to expect a less complicated and elaborate video. Sometimes all a product needs (or deserves) is a simple demonstration - and that’s where the ‘cheese sandwich‘ video comes in.

I should note that the maker of the clock actually linked the previous video in their update addressing the issues. That is class, right there: they admitted the problems and were honest about the criticism. No insincere half-apologies, no hiding of the issues, just "hey, we did screw up, here's what we did wrong, and here's how we fixed it."

First off: I salute and applaud the makers of the clock for recognizing their failures, promising to repair them and then doing so quickly. That's called "customer recovery" and is a central tenet of good business.
Second off: if you hadn't embarassed them publically and disastrously on TH-cam using an 874k sub channel, they wouldn't have even returned your emails. I'd bet you $1000 on it. Because it's happened to me. Twice, actually. That's called "Chinese Internet Commerce" and is a central tenet of the Internet in 2019.

JFC you don't actually seem to have ever experienced the production industry. To boot it all off, they are a group of students. You think they can afford a third party product(not produce, this isn't lettuce mate) testing firm? The term for that is quality assurance btw, and QA for people who aren't billion dollar companies more often that not covers "expected informed use case" in other words how do those who know how it's intended to be used use it. So twisting the bulbs is easy to miss.

These guys definitely deserve some credit for both sorting the problems out and the speed with which they tried to demonstrate they'd rectified the issue!

So you are perfectly right there. And it's also very decent to give them a second chance, since they are so humble about their mistakes.

The frames that hold the numbers being black drives me crazy. They’d look much better, and look more like Nixie tubes at a glance, if that part was also clear. Also, if the tubes were a little shorter so there wasn’t that gap up the top it would also look better.

Based on this video, I ordered one through the Indiegogo campaign, and received it. I just wanted to say how much I like this clock, and I'm glad you got an updated version, and were able to revise your review of it. I would not have gotten one, had it not been for the 2nd video, as I would not have had any confidence in the product if I had only seen the 1st video. The new version now has bluetooth, so you can sync the clock to the time on the device with the app, in my case my android phone. You can also set the colors through it as well. The app is still a little buggy, but works for the most part. I'm sure it is something that is still being worked on, so I am looking forward to an update. I highly recommend the Gixie Clock, and of course the awesome product reviews done on this channel!
