  • It's at the heart of Paris, in every sense of the word, and so when Notre Dame Cathedral was engulfed by fire in April 2019, it became the nation's mission to restore the medieval church to its full glory. Correspondent Seth Doane was given rare access to the cathedral's interior as it undergoes repairs, and talks with the former military general in charge of completing the effort by 2024.

I’m French, I used to live in Montmartre when this fire happened and could witness the whole thing from my window. When the spire fell, I really believed the whole cathedral would collapse and we would lose it entirely. The Parisian firefighters did an exceptional work that night, saving the building so we could restaure it later to its former glory.
You see, I am not actually a religious man but in France, churches and especially cathedrals are the heart of a village or a city. Whether one is catholic or not is irrelevant, these buildings are ours, a familiar place where most of us visit from time to time, whether it is for a wedding, funerals, concerts or even just to find a quiet place to stay for a few minutes in our busy lives.
Notre Dame, as the cathedral or Paris, is a special place for French people, parisians or not. It is celebrated in our art, our literature, our entire culture. We were devastated to watch it burn, we are determined to see it fully restored as soon as possible. Not only for us but also for the millions of guests who come from all over the world to share our culture, our way of life.
Personally, I can’t wait to be able to wander in Notre Dame again, finding again this very unique feeling of serenity and quietness among the crowd visiting it. And I thank all the people dedicated to this task. Their work is a true gift to us all.

You are so right. Too many people focus on whether God is real or not... and sadly, are unable to enjoy the serenity and hope that these type of places have to offer. I'm not necessarily a religious man myself, but you can't dispute the teachings of these types of institutions and the teachings of how to better function in this crazy world of ours.
Again... sadly, the people who are on a crusade against religion/God will never understand these type of ideas, as they crusade against the belief that God is real, and then ignore the wisdom. They are missing the point that most religious teachings and wisdom is for living on this Earth.
We have lost our way, and are seeing this in the way the people of this world act on a daily basis. No hope means destructive tendencies, and they think they are smart and wise... they could not be more wrong. Thank you for your post!

I've been to the cathedral several times. and it is incredibly impressive. You could literally FEEL the history of the structure. 900 years old, I wondered how many thousands of people had stood exactly where I was over the centuries. I was at work when someone came in and said Notre Dame was On fire, I turned on the TV, and after about 10 minutes I was very surprised that all of a sudden I was overwhelmed with emotion, walked outside where I actually started crying. I was 60 then. So glad and relieved when the news came it was still structurally sound and would be repaired. Funny how you can be so attached to something and not realize it, till something terrible happens to it. Thats the power of NOTRE DAME. I live in the US.

It's older than900 years , before that it's was Satanist temple before being made into a "church " , why do you think a secular state cares that much about it . It's still a temple .
Most of these old churches were luceferian ritual sacrifice locations before Christianity , after Christianity many of them were converted into churches so they wouldn't get destroyed.
The men tasked with that conversion were the old builders of these temples , the masons . Get it ?
Those masons carried those Satanist rituals passed it on generation to generation but were still employed mostly by the church until the 1500s when the protestants separated from the catholic church and these masons were free .
So they became free masons , free from the church .
Even the knights templars were Satanists they considered themselves the knights of temples not churches, from Solomons temple to the temples in Europe like this 1 above in the video .
Every Roman colony in Europe had temples were the phallus was worshiped were the cross has replaced it today.

I haven't wanted to comment on Notre Dame , as I too was brought to tears watching the cathedral burn , I am brought to tears every time I think about Notre Dame I never realized how much this building has consumed my psyche until it burned and even watching this video brings me to tears . It is much more than a building , it is much more than France , it is not political it is of GOD it is to be a place of peace and worship , a place of thanksgiving . Notre Dame is one of the most important locations on Earth and one of the most holy of places . Watching it take damage and then watching human political bickering about the landmark has soiled the very human response to bring her back . I have been experiencing weird flashes of seeing Notre Dame in my mind mostly now as I am looking at anything of beauty , all of a sudden the Cathedral shows up , I'll take those visions as hope for us all . Viva La Notre Dame ! BTW I'm an American never been to the Cathedral , but feel almost like it is home , I know weird .

Firemen in most places train to fight the type of fires (and other emergencies) they might encounter within their jurisdiction, and the surrounding ones. In cities, this could be high-rise buildings, connected buildings, under-the-street electrical fires, etc. In a more suburban and rural seaside area (such as an old school chum/firefighter friend of mine has in his jurisdiction), it's stand-alone homes, small shopping centers, a three-story grain elevator (high potential for dust ignition), brush and forest fires, and water rescues (both at sea, and under freshwater ice on the large ponds in the area). You've gotta love the Fire Department!!😘👍

the "modern" suggestions were only the act of pretencious architects that haven't understood the real value of what it was before the destruction and also what is Notre Dame. to me it was obvious that it had to be rebuild in the same way that it was because no architect will do the same work as Eugene Viollet Le Duc did in the 19th century. I suggest to you to look at his work and how he defined what had to be done to restore it... one of the biggest archtect work i ever seen. of course he puted some personal touch but it was legit to me.

Until the fire, services were held at Notre Dame not only several times on Sunday, but throughout the week. Old cathedrals have historically housed Church treasures and served as the burial places of kings and other prominent people. This is true all over Europe and the UK.

@@edennis8578 Thanks for sharing. the wife and I loved our brief visit to Paris. The ropes that raised and lowered the chandeliers so the candles could be changed surprised us, but made sense.

I remember exactly what I was doing, and where I was when the news came on about The Lady, on fire. I was so very upset. I have checked online every few to several months since to see where in her restoration process she is. What an honour the workers must feel being part of this monumental rebuilding. To see the innermost pieces, not seen since it's original build must be truly astounding. God Bless all the workers and restorers.

I'm an atheist but I have a deep love for gothic cathedrals after reading Ken Follett's Pillars of the Earth & World Without End, which were of course inspired by Notre Dame. I remember back in 2019 seeing the fire was physically painful & I grieved over the loss for months after. It felt like the death of a loved one & the most painful experience I'd had in years.
I can't express how happy I am to see this faithful restoration of the beloved cathedral. My own regret is I never got to see Notre Dame before the fire but given the faithfulness of the restoration when I eventually visit Notre Dame I imagine it will look near identical to before the fire.

The firepeople did such an amazing job. And a very dangerous one too. Even as an atheist, I can't thank them enough.
I was standing in the silent crowd, on the banks or river Seine when the cathedral was burning and really expected the whole building would be lost. Isn't it amazing how much they could save?

Instead of focusing on a five year deadline, they need to focus on doing it right. That might take five years. It might take twenty years. Please make sure that the restoration is done correctly and the building is modernized so this does not occur again. I saw it in 1995 and it was probably the most breathtaking experience of my life. A mass was happening and a choir lead by a solo soprano was singing a song in French that I didn't understand a word of, but it was the most beautiful thing I have ever heard in my entire life. The stained glass and hundreds of lit candles were just the most amazing visual you can imagine. I will go back when the restoration is complete.

This fire broke my heart💔. I remember saying that it was a sign that something very bad was going to happen. I’m so glad it being brought back to it’s original glory.

So glad to hear a progress report on the restoration. It's incredible that they were able to save the windows and that modern artisan have been able to replicate the wood work.it's fortunate that most of the stonework was able to be saved. The whole world was horrified when Notre Dome caught fire and I can't imagine the effect it had on our French friends.

It just wasn't the same standing outside of her and look at the ongoing construction. I guess it just gives us a reason to go back to Paris in a few years. :)

3:48 they aren't flying buttresses, they are the vault ribs,

    • @dutchman7623
      @dutchman7623 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Correct! But the flying buttresses are pushing inwards while the vault ribs are unstable.
And the downward pressure from the heavy wooden roof is gone, so the columns could go inward as well.
That is why everything has to be supported and the heat effected 'cement' between the stones has to be replaced.
They used chalk mix to glue them together, which is heat sensitive, and loses its strength in a fire.
So all masonry has to be checked and redone before you can bring back what was destroyed.
Preservation of what remained is what is being done right now. And gathering materials for the parts that were lost.

It will never be "replaced." Restored, maybe, but not replaced. It took a century or more in Medieval times to construct its incredible wooden roof, and it will never be replaced. It was way more valuable and precious than the 19th century iron spire that the media seemed to fixate on as the greatest loss to the structure.

    • @jadawin10
      @jadawin10 ปีที่แล้ว

This is not the way of seeing the French and Europeans. These building types are not homogeneous, there are plenty of parts of the cathedral that have been modified, restorated or added over the centuries. The new materials will fit in with all those that have been added during the long life of this monument.

Maybe they should work with the architects and historians who rebuilt Dresden's Frauenkirche, which had been destroyed in bombing raids. Each stone was carefully cataloged and numbered in the postwar years on the expectation that the cathedral would one day be rebuilt. The result is noteworthy

I’m not even French, but this fire upset me. I almost cried when the people of Paris gathered around and sang hymns that night. I’m a lover of history and this cathedral has pan-European, if not universal, significance. I hope someone, maybe UNESCO, is making top-quality digital images of all ancient buildings and monuments of this importance. (Maybe they can start a program to install modern fire suppression systems in them, too, I think many millions would donate for this, I would). Destructive events like this can always happen; earthquakes are a continual threat around the Mediterranean, especially, where so there are so many precious remains of our cultural history. Think if the Parthenon came down!

And as an architect I appreciate that it is the ‘grand dame’ of cathedrals and a labor of loving faith for those involved in its original construction. Also, does anyone know the classical musical composition at the conclusion of this video?
