I think it is the opposite! He was always Alex but was given a "new identity" to go to school "normally" as "Marco" since his family was always in politics and his "fling" with Elle just affirmed to him that he is gay! Then Henry walked in and the rest is history! LOL
i know more mom roles like these they remind me moms dont just have to be advice gurus or assholes whos assholery one has to overcome to exist in fiction
Uma Thurman as the POTUS? Yes, please! I loved her bond with Alex. Also, it's great to get a cheesy Queer Rom Com which has a happy ending, and doesn't involve one of the leads dying.
I wasn't quite sure about the accent but as a European please forgive me if this is authentic to Texas, I thought it sounded overdone. Anyway, I think I understood what kind of character she was going for and I like her.
@@c.w.8200 Anyone from Texas care to chime in on the accent? I'm American, but not from Texas, so I wasn't sure. The way everyone in the press keeps calling it a "Southern" accent makes me wonder.
@c.w.8200 I'm a Texan, so I feel like I can accurately answer the question. It was Definitely over done. Texas has about 5 different accents in the region, since we are a pretty big state. It feels like they might have been trying to go for a West Texas Small Town accent, but they just didn't do it correctly at all. It definitely doesn't give Austin Texas.
The Texan female President's POC son comes out as being in an active homosexual relationship with a British prince and still managing to flip Texas to blue was the hardest I've ever had to fight to suspend disbelief.
@@eliawillinger4329 not just candidate - there was a democrat from texas in office in the 60s. regardless, the states don't have the right to "allow" candidates.
The reason they changed the queen to king was because when they were filming the movie, the queen was still alive and they didn’t want to seem disrespectful, but then Lizzie died so…
also the director said that for the next 3 generations theres gonna be a king so the change should make the movie feel less dated when people watch it in the next 50 years.
i'm just happy that both Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez got a lot of love out of this movie because both have been through a few bad movies. Nicholas's career seems thriving right now since it looks like he got a lot of good project and hopefully we can see Taylor's getting good project too because of this. both are really talented.
I have to say I wasn't sure how I felt about Nicholas after he was in purple hearts because of the rather horrendous message it portrayed but after this movie I'm definitely seeing the hype behind him
@@iamsatan8961 He was in some really bad movies, but he is a good actor. If you got some time, I highly recommend checking out Handsome Devil, another LGBTQ movie he was one of the leads in.
@@iamsatan8961go watch him in handsome devil. Purple Hearts was just a crappy script/story I honestly was super impressed by Nicholas’s versatility to play a character like that when it’s so far from most of the roles he has done. I can’t wait to see him in bottoms for pure comedy and then Mary and George which is a period piece. He is making some smart career choices by choosing such varied work/characters/stories. I think it will serve him well in the future to not be type cast.
Wasn’t he also in the Camilla Cabello Amazon Cinderella movie?? Good for him for getting better roles honestly! Although he’s now played a prince twice lmao
I really enjoyed the movie although it did feel a bit rushed and i think it should've been a series instead of a 2 hour movie but other than that i think it did a good job in adapting from the book !!
@@mildredwetbed9791 yeah, I like all these little cute moments, such as Amy showing Alex pictures of her shih tzu and Henry's actor facial expressions journeys.
I think it’s good that we have a return to fun romcoms (and with queer couples), even if they aren’t perfect. Plenty of prized romcoms aren’t perfect either. I think it would have been a better short series, but I think it’s fine that it was just a decent movie, too!
The SHRIEK I let out when Shaan appeared on screen!!! I went to uni with him! I've acted with him!!!! Oh my god Akshay I am so happy for you! I need to go and actually watch this and congratulate him now!
Ive read the book at least 4 times now and i love the movie. Theyre two separate entities. Matthew Lopez loves the book, Casey McQuiston was super happy with the movie, and Nick and Taylor absolutely KILLED it as the boys. Do i wish it had been a miniseries? Absolutely. Am i beyond happy that we got a gay romcom with a happy ending thats really fun and made with so much love? 1000%.
Yeeeeeees this ive watched the film 8 times now. It's so refreshing to finally see a lighthearted fun gay romcom. I honestly don't think I can watch this video 😂😭
I'm typically a book-first person, but in this case I'm glad I did the opposite. I adored the movie with no caveats, and I like the feeling of watching the world expand now as I read the book. It's like going from the standard version to a director's cut. I have a feeling that I'll still love the movie on its own merits even after I finish the book.
OMG SAME!! The way I loved the movie SOOOOO MUCH! I thought it was *so close to perfect* -- the chemistry, the characters, the plot, the pacing, the tension, the romance, the relationships, the setting, the locations, the cinematography, the after-effects! Compared to other movies, this was REALLY REALLY GOOD. Now imagine me not liking and enjoying such a honestly awesome movie because of the book's expectations!! I'm glad I watched the movie first! Cause the book is good yes, more story, more context, more love, more drama, more complex, more plot, but the movie was REALLY GOOD TOO ON IT'S OWN! So rewatchable!! ❤️
These were EXACTLY my thoughts, because unfortunately I read the book first and was disappointed by the movie, everything that she pointed out actually. But if I had watched the movie first I would have loved it!
@@indykayzee I learned with Twlight watch the movie first then read because you will always feel cheated as book reader. And honestly the book readers are always annoyiing and whinny about the changes. Something ignorance is best :)
I do miss the part where Alex was debating which part of him should be offended more his TX side or his Mexican side about beans being on toast because I also was debating about that too when I found out that Brittan dose that.
i know people are complaining about this movie being rushed but i personally think it was perfectly paced. the chemistry between the actors that played Alex and Henry was off the roof! and it was overall a cheesy fun gay rom-com and i loved every second of it.
Haven't read the book yet and LOVED the movie. Zahra freaking out when she discovers them is so funny. I agree about the beginning pacing being rushed but felt like it had good pacing overall.
I don’t personally think they have good chemistry. Everything was rushed and the scenes between them were disappointing. I’ve read the book and thought it’s a cute romance and their chemistry in the book is actually off the roof, as you say. There’s a lot more depth of their characters and important scenes like how Alex needs time to reflect and understand that he’s bi, cute scenes, thoughts Alex has, the multiple texts between them that really shows their personalities and also the intimate scenes between them are so much more realistic with them being awkward because it’s a first for both of them so they take time to understand what they like and how to do things. I’m really disappointed at the movie adaptation but if you liked the movie I strongly recommend you to read the book, it’s so much better and it’s not even long.
@Sh4d0w_L1cker many things you listed won't work in a movie. At least, not well. Like the texts and emails are cute but it would be too much if they showed them all. And we can't always have Alex's thoughts.
I think the lead actors were definitely the highlight for me. I would've loved to see June (I can say as a fellow chaotic, Mexican bisexual that we really need the kind of humbling only a sibling can provide). I really wish they had stuck with the Republican candidate being behind the emails, would've loved to see Alex coming into his bisexuality like he did in the book rather than just already know he's bi at the start of the story. But I do think the actors captured the characters so well, genuinely felt like the actors were just made for these roles.
Nah. Too many bisexual people are unrealistic. I mean ... three of them at once and all are children of the american rulers? 🤨 That's like those gay romance novels in which everyone is gay, even the villains.
Probably didn't want to alienate the weird subset of people that claim to support LGBT rights but don't like things to be "political". Guaranteed there'd have been a slew of people complaining that they made a cute love story political and took sides
The characters are just so much richer in the book! Henry's love of queer British history, Alex having trouble making friends. I wish the boys had been better represented in the movie.
I saw the movie first and liked it so much I had to read the book. I know it's wrong but I enjoyed the movie SO much more than the book. I loved the aged up characters, kept the parents married, and Alex's work in Texas. In the book his "work" for the campaign was just nepotism, but in the movie he works so hard to win Texas. I enjoyed that they showed Henry's perspective more and moved Alex's speech to before he was able to reunite with Henry. The speech was also much more poignant, relevant, and eloquent in the movie. Oh and Zahra and the President? So much better in the movie.
I think the Rafael Luna storyline would have just taken up more time than they could afford to give it to do it right. Honestly, I prefer they cut it than do it half-assed. I do agree with you the leak should still have been tied to the Richards campaign. That part was a weird change.
I read the book in 2019 when it came out. I absolutely love it with all my heart. That being said, I still loved the movie even though there’s the obvious condensation of the story to fit the runtime. I honestly wasn’t bothered by any of the changes. To me at least, the movie did a great job telling this story for a new audience
@@AmandaTheJedi I definitely liked Rafael Luna more as a character, but I don't mind the change to the reporter (the political plot was always the weaker, more convoluted part of the book, so I was sure they were gonna change it). What I absolutely HATE is what it does to Alex's arc and his journey to bisexuality, which was very dear to my heart, as a woman who found herself in her mid 20s
As someone who has read the book probably a dozen times and has a tattoo from a Casey McQuistion book, I’ll say that I’m pretty happy with this adaptation. I don’t love the cutting of Luna and the political plot, but the movie definitely captured Henry and Alex’s relationship. I swear when they announced the casting last year there was definitely and actor who was set to play Luna so I don’t know if that change was made once they were already in production. If you loved reading Red, White, and Royal Blue you’ve gotta pick up Casey’s second book One Last Stop. It’s got lesbians, time travel, drag queens, and some of the sweetest found family content.
In the UK, people weren't directly familiar with Bowie knives, so in the early decades of his career only a minority of people knew the origin of his stage name. Of those people who did know, only some knew how to say it properly. Since it wasn't his birth name and he was a nice guy, you didn't hear him correct people very often. When presenters said his name on TV and radio, most of time they'd use a pronunciation to rhyme with "Cowie" (not a particularly common name but one thousands of people have, so you can see how that happened). Both pronunciations floated around for decades, but we've mostly trained ourselves out of the mispronunciation now. Some people can't shake the wrong one, though.
@@smwatertasteslikewater No doubt, you're an advanced culture. It'll be England dragging down the UK average as usual. It's an age thing too, I think. 40s and under are more likely to know it's pronounced to rhyme with "doughy". Older people saw far fewer TV appearances and would mostly be at the mercy of radio DJs' pronunciations.
The Bowie knife (the kind popularized by Jim Bowie who died at the Alamo) is pronounced Boo-ee. But I love seeing how the same name has so many different pronunciations!!
@@auldthymer Yeah, that could be a bigger thing than the "Cowie" one. Why didn't they just ask? Dick Cavett asked! There's a similar thing with the comedian Dylan Moran, where it's a toss-up whether an English person will say it as it's said in Ireland (rhyming with "foreign") or however tf they like ("more-Anne"). It's starting to look like world history has a point with this "arrogant" tag we picked up somehow 🤔
If I was making this movie and I knew there was a possibility of getting Stephen bloody Fry to be in it I would rewrite literally any character he wanted so he could play it
Amanda is right, the map at 28:27 is pure science fiction, no way it would come down to Texas if it switched blue - because there's no way that happens if Minnesota went red
I hated the political plot in the book like I literally have to block it out of my mind in order to enjoy the story (because I love eberything else) so I'm glad they changed that. Also Miguel to me represents those people in the queer community who don't understand the right to self determination of other queer people and can end up forcing people to be outed (i.e. the Kit Connor incident)
I think the adaptation is really solid! The biggest part I´m missing is June not existing, which they somehow could fix with a sequel? Just say she was... at college abroad? Or something? And we just never mentioned her? Overall the book is obviously more in depth. But I love the chemistry between Taylor and Nick in the movie. It is a bit rushed, or not "rushed" but very fast paced, and I´m praying we get the extended cut of the movie at some point. But it´s a really fun time. And we deserve cheesy queer romcoms! And everything that was in the movie was really really good.
You amd me are completely on the same page when it comes to things you liked and disliked about the movie. Including the reporter thing, Alex thinking everything will be fine after the election ignoring the fact that Henry is a prince, and Henry being on stage at election night.
That makes three for me, as well. Nailed it. Also - as someone who had a job that interacted a lot with compliance, the book was giving me heart palpitations as they were exchanging these very personal emails over 'work' servers... PLEASE, PLEASE DON'T EVER DO THAT Y'ALL 😬 Assume everything is stored and recorded BECAUSE IT IS.
Wait don't those two things happen in the book as well? I swear Alex says "it won't matter if the neighbors see us" and he also encourages Henry to come on the stage aftee his mom winds the election
It’s funny because they mention the existence of Hilary Clinton in the book and Obama’s presidency occurs right before his mom’s so like Hilary’s email email scandal didn’t occur?? That in particular was glaringly stupid behavior of children raised in the public eye, they have NDA’s but think emails on publicly funded server are ok and neither are underage. Like come on of course that’s getting leaked.
@@schwaben4120 those two were done in the book but also it was kind of different. At least with how they covered the conversation of after the election and how Henry ended said conversation. Still is bizarre though that no one thought that it would be very bad politically speaking for Henry to be on stage.
The movie definitely feels like a fanfic of the book BUT I don't mind it. I think the leads were absolutely perfect, after seeing it I can't imagine anyone else playing the leads though they were perfect. I've watched the movie 5 times and done a relisten of the audiobook twice in the past week 😂
I read someone saying that they liked the "history, huh?" moment being switched from e-mail to a conversation, because their private, non-digital conversations were their own and stayed that way, while their written conversations and footage from them was leaked or broadcasted, so it was not a part of the privacy violation they faced.
As someone who watched the movie before I've read the book, I think that is the best way to go. Without the expectation of the book, I had a freaking blast with this movie. And now I'm extra hyped to get my hands on the book.
Loved both the book & movie separately. The book was deep & touching, had a lot of lessons and feelings. But the movie was adorable & sweet! The chemistry between the leads was incredible and the pacing was so much fun. There were parts that had me blushing and giggling like a school girl. Very few rom coms can do that. Would have loved it to be longer. Like a 6 episode series like TSITP. I think both are great, and I want a sequel, but only with these two actors.
I only watched the movie, but it has the feel of the 2000' rom-coms. Like, not serious super deep stuff but fun and heartwarming to watch, with cute relatable things that make you sight like a lovesick teen. I really love that a modern film could take me back to that time so, honestly? as an adaptation I couldn't say, but as a rom-com? straight to my comfort movies list!
I loved the book and thought it was a cute movie. The only problems I had was no June or Luna. I hated the new reporter character . I wish they had the bi panic/awaking of Alex, that was an important chapter in the book.
one thing i missed was the lawyer arc where alex decides to persue law for a bit which is why henry was okay with them being together. this was mentioned slightly in that one "wont trade one prison for another" scene but never again and i think it could be delved into more
I knew of the book and it took a while of my feed being full of clips from the film for me to sit down and watch it. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I actually loved it. It was way funnier than it had every right to be and it leaned into the cheesiness of the plot which I really enjoyed, more rom-coms should do that
I'm so impressed with Nicholas. He was the brightest spot of that dumb Cinderella movie and he does Henry so well. I liked the book fine when I read it but I wasn't clamoring for a movie so he's honestly most of the reason I watched. And even though it felt rushed and like it was missing depth for both characters and the relationship, I thought it was fine and Nicholas did shine. I loved the staging for the long-distance conversations and the New Years dancefloor scene was pretty cool. I also like that they cut some of the slower political things from the book, but I also hate the change to how everything is made public (especially since Alex should be smart enough not to talk to a reporter without confirming it's off the record, especially when he's representing the campaign).
LITERALLY just finished reading the book a rewatching the movie wondering if amanda made a video about it already... she just gets me. like thats mother right there
this is the video that convinced me to finally watch red, white and royal blue just now. and im gonna be fully honest, i LOVED it. i just love a cheesy queer romcom. i want all the queer happy endings. it soothes and heals my little heart. i haven't read the book so maybe that's also why i loved it that much, but I feel like even when I do it won't take away from the joy this silly little movie brought me
I liked the movie. I haven't read the book, so I can't comment on how it could've been better with parts that didn't make it to the movie. But the one thing I liked is that finally it's not a toxic relationship between the lovers!! Twilight and all the crap that came with it it's so tiring!!
the one thing i disliked the most about the movie is that they took out the part where henry stood up for alex and their relationship in front of Phillip and the queen/king, even threatening to abdicate bc, at least for me, it showed the lengths henry was willing to go to be with alex. and don't get me started on them removing june's character
knowing that the journalist was added for the movie makes a LOT of stuff make sense. like how weird and pushy his character was, and how obvious it was that he was gonna cause trouble for alex and henry out of jealousy. the movie was silly and tropey overall, but that whole thread felt contrived in a way that didn't match the rest of the story. i still enjoyed it a LOT, but i'm glad to know the story is handled with more deftness in the original book. like my biggest gripe with the movie was when the journalist was being interviewed and was called out about the timing of his article, and he suddenly gets all "idk what you're implying omg." if the guy was a halfway competent journalist (especially an unscrupulous one like we're supposed to believe), he'd have had an answer to that incredibly obvious question ready to go. something like "it's my job to synthesize large amounts of information very quickly so i can keep my readers informed" or what have you. the obvious fumble was unnecessary and hand-holdy and kind of annoying.
A CLIFF NOTE'S VERSION OF THE STORY! That's the perfect way to describe it! It's so hard for me to put into words why exactly I didn't like this movie, and it's exactly because it just doesn't go into depth like the book does. Yeah, that's gonna happen in most movie adaptations, but still. I was super hyped for this movie and it just fell flat. Alex is such an interesting character in the book, especially when it comes to his personal relationships with June and his parents, and they just get rid of all of that. (BRING BACK ELLEN AND OSCAR DIVORCE GODDAMMIT!! Genuinely my biggest problem with this movie, argh) (also the audiobook narrator mispronouncing Bowie has annoyed me for YEARS. absolutely adore the audiobook otherwise lol) Fun fact: Queen Mary being replaced with the king is because at the start of the movie's production, Queen Elizabeth was still alive and I guess they didn't want to insult her. But then a few months later there was a king anyways. Oops. PRAYING that the sequel delves deeper into some book-related plots that weren't brought up in the first movie. I have more hopes for the sequel, honestly. If they don't have enough canon source material to base it off of, then they can't disappoint me! Right?!!!!
I did enjoy the movie for what it was, I’m a huge fan of the book so I do have lots of issues with it as well. But I had fun watching it, I really believe it should’ve been a limited series instead of a movie so much more could’ve been included and they could’ve delved more in depth into all the characters (and included June and Luna 😭😭😭) but I really missed Alex’s discovery of his bisexuality as someone who is bisexual Alex’s journey meant a lot to me. There was a scene I really wanted (I knew it wasn’t going to included so I wasn’t too disappointed) it’s a scene between Alex and Bea (Henry’s sister) where bea openly talks about grief and how it feels to lose a parent so young and even though I knew it’d get cut I was a little disappointed it’s one of my favorite scenes in book 💔
I'm a huge fan of the book too and I think for me more than the plot change it was the condensation of Alex's and Henry's characterizations that was the problem. Like you said Alex's bi-awakening and Henry's grief give the story and their bond so much depth.
@@BubblyBrainiac no because the minute Bea said that I was sobbing because I relate so much to Henry (specifically his grief over his dad but for me it’s my mom) like Bea’s whole ass monologue was a punch straight to my face fr
I really enjoyed this movie! Haven't read the book but definitely want to now. I think what I appreciated most was that I felt like it got the standard rom com treatment - just with guys. We need more of this! Thought both leads were terrific, I quite liked Uma Thurman as the President (and even more in her Mom moments), Norah was a treat, and I absolutely love Sarah Shahi and would love to see her in more roles like this. (That is, unless someone wants to finally get around to doing that Person of Interest spin-off with Sameen as the main character. BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE AWESOME.) It was cute, the leads were hot, the romance was sweet - it hit all the right notes. Would love a sequel!
Thank you for acknowledging the Bowie thing in the audiobook! After a couple times I honestly began to wonder if I had been mispronouncing Bowie my entire life.
This synopsis reminds me so much of several Yaoi I've seen. One in particular is about dating the 'sexiest man of the year', another about dating a movie star, because Japanese men, especially Japanese male actors who star in heteromances, are not allowed to be seen with other men/gay. I'm sure there's a "Princes aren't allowed to be gay" Yaoi out there.
As someone who hasn't read the book in many years, I really loved the movie! I think having some distance def helped me overlook the changes they made tho, and instead I was just like "oh yeah!" whenever there was something that they stated true to
i watched the movie before i read the book and i thought the movie slapped But Then i read the book and was blown away!! so at least i got to enjoy the movie for a bit before i criticized every aspect of it
I started watching this video when it came out then immediately pause went and read the book, watched the movie, and then came back to finish this video. I had so much fun with all 3 experiences. Thanks for making this video!
The book was so sweat and so slow. The emails they sent. When Alex and Henry look out the window at the castle and when Alex leaves England at the end of the book…my romantic heart couldn’t take it. And Amy’s speech. I know the movie couldn’t do all of that but put the speech after England.
I discovered Nicholas Galitzine in Handsome Devil. Great character, great acting, I cried... only positive stuff, really, I love that movie. And then he played the prince in that Cinderella modern retelling (help) and also the hateable soldier dude (wtf was that movie ???). So seeing him in a role more complex and quite similar to his character in Handsome Devil feels great ! 🙏
an enemies to lovers/political animals/ president's son/fluff AU? This is so new to me, I swear I have never read anything similar on AO3 before. Definitely not with a blonde/brunette dynamic I wonder how the story will go? Now I have to see it
i’m not mad about the song change in the museum scene because the idea of the president’s son and the prince of england dancing to the guy who wrote self insert/jensen ackles fic in which jensen vores him an a Zales is extremely funny to me
The book is one of my favourite YA books and I think the movie did a great job adapting it. I just wish there was maybe another half hour to the movie. They sped rushed through the last half of the movie and there was so much they left out after Henry and Alex made up.
I think some of these changes, like Alex already having some experience with guys, and being more active in the political sense, is because he and Henry are supposed to be older than their book counterparts. In the book, if I'm not mistaken, they say they're 19, or at least Alex is, but in the movie I got the sense that they're at least 25, maybe older, even.
It's exactly like you said: I'd have liked this movie way more if I hadn't read the book first. I hated some of the changes they made and I think this would have been better has a mini series rather than a movie
@@AmandaTheJedi I looked it up and yes, you're right. I think my confusion came from hearing people from all over Britain pronouncing it differently depending on their accent.
Definitely agree the biggest failing in the changes they made was the Journalist leak vs the political leak. It would have been sooooo much more interesting.
I can’t get around the disconnect between Alex imploring Henry to try and work things out, to them going to the museum - it’s like a whole conversation got cut.
Nicholas trully was great man like i haven't seen him in anything else i had no expectations and i just think he really brought the version of henry they gave him to life, he almost made up for how much i felt like i was missing from alex just cause his point of view was so satisfying to watch. im rereading the book now and i find so many scenes taking parts of his performance in.
I don't even know why I clicked on this video, but clearly it was fate because I have never had an opening to comment on this specific thing before, and it's been like a living thing in me since it happened. The audiobook narrator mispronouncing David Bowie's name was a bit destabilizing sure, but we are three (4?) years from when I listened to it and I will NEVER be over the way he read the song in that karaoke scene.
i enjoyed this movie a lot and it made me cry so much, i think i might’ve enjoyed it more than some others because i haven’t read the book yet and had nothing to compare it to
Thank you for pointing out these changes - they bothered me so much! Especially the changing of the order of the climax so Alex gives his speech first! The Palace cant just deny what the White House confirmed - like what??? And Miguel really bothered me too. Also I get in theory, cutting June but they already stripped Alex of the pressures he felt to be perfect and then also earsed the fact that hes a child of divorce and also not an only child. Like thats 80% of his characterization in the book. He felt stupid and surface level compared to book Alex
2 most hilarious things you glossed over SEVERELY in this review... 1. The "make love" Scene has the best quote.... About Henry went to all boys boarding school, so Alex have nothing to be worried about... Please that is such a queendom level of serve 2. How dare you stop at the condom discussion, especially when his mom mentioned about Truvada, bottoming, even HPV risk.... That's such a "I'm not your regular Mom, I'm a cool Mom" energy, I was rolling in my bed laughing like maniac
I haven't read the book and just watched the movie yesterday. I really liked it. I was crying when they were suffering and then happy tears at the end.
It's also, as _Politico_ pointed out in their article about this movie, very unethical for a journalist to hook up with a source or someone they are covering. They also mention that the turnaround time from the leak to the article was not unreasonable, but that Reddit posts were not reliable sources. It's an interesting article. I was kind of puzzled why the movie chose to dis _Politico._
As someone who actually hated the book (the writing was absolutely not for me and I had to DNF), I was pleasantly surprised. Maybe because my expectations were in hell😭
I read someone call Nick's previous movie Violet vital organs. And I won't be reffering to it otherwise. I loved to movie. It gets better with every viewing. But I also barely remember the book. Nick and Taylor did such a wonderful job with the characters and their relationship. As did Matthew Lopez. But I can understand why people who love the book would be frustrated or disapointed. Matthew Lopez did a really interesting interview explaining the changes and cuts and what the story he wanted to tell was. And despite the pace issues I think he managed pretty well. He also explains why they changed it from queen to king. But I do need the three hours extended cut like yesterday.
I watched it after seeing clips online and really enjoyed it. It was a cute rom com, I feel like we don't get movies that are just cute and entertaining.
As someone who hasn't read the book (is planning on it though!), I really enjoyed the movie. I absolutely agree that the pacing was real bad and the journalist just felt like he was there to provide conflict. Honestly I think those things could've just been fixed if it had become a mini series instead! Despite that, the chemistry between Nicholas and Taylor felt quite believable, the humor was pretty good- and I guess the entire thing just felt charming? Yes, the budget was questionable and some lines were delivered shakily, but honestly I didn't mind at all. SO YEAH, it should've been a series instead but I'm happy to get gay romcoms either way.
I liked the movie well enough, though it's also been several years since I've read the book and I forgot a lot of the major plot points whoops (and seeing you go through the changes made me realize I forgot way more than I even thought I did). Definitely going to go back and re-read the book soon. But I thought the relationship between Alex & Henry was adorable, even if the other characters were either omitted or effectively non-entities.
Well the movie isn’t a call me by your name one ( where the movie was way better than the book) but I feel like it should have taken its time to both of them. It feels rushed and cut but I love still love that movie
I know we got one Alex speech in the movie. But for some reason while reading the book, the last speech during election day.... gave me goosebumps and when they won I had tears in my eyes..... I feel that scene made Alex's passion shine a lot. So I was pretty bummed to not have that in the movie..... and not having Henry's mom stand up to monarchy for him.... pretty big steal..... seriously!! Wish they would release uncut version
At least Marco finally moved on from Elle, changed his name to Alex, got himself a new identity as the President's son, and fell for Henry.
I cannot tell if someone has chemistry or not but they were cute together.
@@katherinealvarez9216 Chemistry is pretty subjective.
@@HuntingViolets that makes sense.
And Luke got his shit together, let Cassie go, figured out his sexuality, became British and the prince and fell in love with Alex 😍
I think it is the opposite! He was always Alex but was given a "new identity" to go to school "normally" as "Marco" since his family was always in politics and his "fling" with Elle just affirmed to him that he is gay! Then Henry walked in and the rest is history! LOL
Uma Thurman and Olivia Colman being affirming moms to bi kids. Now those are role models.
i know more mom roles like these they remind me moms dont just have to be advice gurus or assholes whos assholery one has to overcome to exist in fiction
The bar needs to be higher than "they're both alive at the end"
@@dyld921 Since this was a romcom, that should pretty much be a given!

Who cares honestly
The queen wasn’t a good person
I assumed it was because they got Stephen Fry.

i'm just happy that both Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez got a lot of love out of this movie because both have been through a few bad movies. Nicholas's career seems thriving right now since it looks like he got a lot of good project and hopefully we can see Taylor's getting good project too because of this. both are really talented.
At the very least amazon better give both of them some work with a sequel.
But I´m also very interested what Taylor will be in next
yes! Taylor was in HBO's Minx recently and that was very good
I have to say I wasn't sure how I felt about Nicholas after he was in purple hearts because of the rather horrendous message it portrayed but after this movie I'm definitely seeing the hype behind him
@@iamsatan8961 He was in some really bad movies, but he is a good actor.
Henry in this and Jeff in Bottoms being played by the same actor is still a shock to me.
That is a testament to Nicholas' range as actor honestly.
Agreed, he also played Timmy in "The Craft: Legacy", and Luke in "Purple Hearts", and at least he's getting better work now.
Wasn’t he also in the Camilla Cabello Amazon Cinderella movie?? Good for him for getting better roles honestly! Although he’s now played a prince twice lmao
Reminds me of Daniel Day Lewis who played Cecil in a room with a view and a punk gay man in my beautiful Laundrette

I really enjoyed the movie although it did feel a bit rushed and i think it should've been a series instead of a 2 hour movie but other than that i think it did a good job in adapting from the book !!
Agreed, I felt sad about the omission of characters such as June, Leo or Rafael, but I suppose that they can only show so much.
i really wish it was a series, i loved the book so much and the film was lovely just rushed 😢
The movie was supposed to be 3 hours long. It would have been better if the book was a short TV series in order to include everything from the book.
Really ?! @@MidnightRose716

Say hi to him! Tell him he did great 👌🏾👌🏾
Ive read the book at least 4 times now and i love the movie.
Zara was my favorite character. Her freakout after finding Henry in Alex's room is art.
It's so good! Gah I love that scene
I do miss the part where Alex was debating which part of him should be offended more his TX side or his Mexican side about beans being on toast because I also was debating about that too when I found out that Brittan dose that.
The correct answer is both😂 but seriously wish we had that scene
the queen change is actually funny because they changed it to a king to distance the movie from the royal family. and then the queen actually died 💀💀
i know people are complaining about this movie being rushed but i personally think it was perfectly paced. the chemistry between the actors that played Alex and Henry was off the roof! and it was overall a cheesy fun gay rom-com and i loved every second of it.
I think knowing the movie was set over almost a year made it not seem too rushed to me.
I think the beginning was rushed but after that I was fine with the pacing
That's like those gay romance novels in which everyone is gay, even the villains.
Probably didn't want to alienate the weird subset of people that claim to support LGBT rights but don't like things to be "political". Guaranteed there'd have been a slew of people complaining that they made a cute love story political and took sides

I know right! There’s no way there’s at least three bisexual people in the whole world. Crazy 🙄
The characters are just so much richer in the book! Henry's love of queer British history, Alex having trouble making friends. I wish the boys had been better represented in the movie.

i genuinely need a sequel one movie is NOT enough for these characters and nick and taylor’s chemistry is just *chefs kiss*
The reporter is 100% my biggest issue.

It might be in the 2nd movie hopefully but I like it equally. But I really hated the kindred adaptation it was way worse xmen
After loving Royal Blue, I guess I had high expectations for One Last Stop, but it was really disappointing to me ://
I'm guessing that the tattoo is one of Jane's? Especially since you recommended One Last Stop.
I pronounce it like bo-e
As does literally every other Scot I know
@@smwatertasteslikewater No doubt, you're an advanced culture.
I thought that since it was a dog, they meant Bow - ie as in "bow-wow-wow"
@@auldthymer Yeah, that could be a bigger thing than the "Cowie" one. Why didn't they just ask? Dick Cavett asked!
There's a similar thing with the comedian Dylan Moran, where it's a toss-up whether an English person will say it as it's said in Ireland (rhyming with "foreign") or however tf they like ("more-Anne"). It's starting to look like world history has a point with this "arrogant" tag we picked up somehow 🤔
Absolutely wild to me that they changed the entire family dynamic when Alex's family played such a large role in the book.
RIGHT??? IT PISSES ME OFF SO MUCH
If I was making this movie and I knew there was a possibility of getting Stephen bloody Fry to be in it I would rewrite literally any character he wanted so he could play it
Amanda is right, the map at 28:27 is pure science fiction, no way it would come down to Texas if it switched blue - because there's no way that happens if Minnesota went red
@@rightsarentpolitical yeah I don't know why the author wrote it like that but oooof.
"Put these two lovesick homosexuals on the phone with each other!" must be the best line I've ever heard in any kind of entertainment.
My friend group watched it together and from the first moment we met Miguel we were seething. There was a lot of yelling 10/10 would watch again
I hadn't read the book, I watched the movie and now I'm obsessed. The chemistry between those two is pure fire! The book is next in my reading list.
It was way funnier than it had every right to be and it leaned into the cheesiness of the plot which I really enjoyed, more rom-coms should do that
dude i have watched the movie 3 times. it's just too cute
Me too, it's so cute and hilarious, I want a sequel please...or 3, or just a steady stream of fluffy gay romance movies, like 4 a year?
What do you mean they switched the sitting Monarch? 🤔 Stephen Fry is a total QUEEN 😂
Genuinely my biggest problem with this movie, argh)
(also the audiobook narrator mispronouncing Bowie has annoyed me for YEARS. absolutely adore the audiobook otherwise lol)
Fun fact: Queen Mary being replaced with the king is because at the start of the movie's production, Queen Elizabeth was still alive and I guess they didn't want to insult her. But then a few months later there was a king anyways. Oops.
PRAYING that the sequel delves deeper into some book-related plots that weren't brought up in the first movie. I have more hopes for the sequel, honestly. If they don't have enough canon source material to base it off of, then they can't disappoint me! Right?!!!!
I've LOVED this movie so much. Literally watched it six times now. It's such cheesy romcom goodness, I'm so so happy with it
I did enjoy the movie for what it was, I’m a huge fan of the book so I do have lots of issues with it as well.
“Oh love, he misses dad,” it is a scene imprinted on me.

BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE AWESOME.)
It was cute, the leads were hot, the romance was sweet - it hit all the right notes. Would love a sequel!
Thank you for acknowledging the Bowie thing in the audiobook! After a couple times I honestly began to wonder if I had been mispronouncing Bowie my entire life.
They casted Alex and Henry sooooo well! I love it. ❤️

i spent all day reading this, then watching the movie, i needed this video to help fill the void it gave me and i thank you for that 😭
All of Casey mcquistons books feature a super fun queer found family and it made me pretty sad that that was missing from the movie.
i’m not mad about the song change in the museum scene because the idea of the president’s son and the prince of england dancing to the guy who wrote self insert/jensen ackles fic in which jensen vores him an a Zales is extremely funny to me
This review sold me on watching it and I was not expecting the dialogue to be this snappy.
The book is one of my favourite YA books and I think the movie did a great job adapting it. I just wish there was maybe another half hour to the movie. They sped rushed through the last half of the movie and there was so much they left out after Henry and Alex made up.
It's not a YA book though.
THE CAKETASTROPHY THING!!!! THANK YOU!!! I"m glad I wasn't the only one who noticed that!
It's exactly like you said: I'd have liked this movie way more if I hadn't read the book first. I hated some of the changes they made and I think this would have been better has a mini series rather than a movie
Uma Thurman and Daniel Craig need to sit down for an interview explaining Southern Accents.
The pronunciation of David Bowie's last name is optional as far as I know. I always say Beau-we as well, but Bao-we is probably okay too.
He always said Beau-eee in interviews so I just assumed that was the correct way

I looked it up and yes, you're right. I think my confusion came from hearing people from all over Britain pronouncing it differently depending on their accent.
Knives Out 3: Uma Thurman is revealed as Benoit Blanc's sister.
With how he was oogling the statues...
The scene in the museum made me think Henry was gonna say
"This is where i realised I was gay gay."
I don't think they really settled the problem with the prince not wanting to end up someone's political spouse.
I don't even know why I clicked on this video, but clearly it was fate because I have never had an opening to comment on this specific thing before, and it's been like a living thing in me since it happened.
The audiobook narrator mispronouncing David Bowie's name was a bit destabilizing sure, but we are three (4?) years from when I listened to it and I will NEVER be over the way he read the song in that karaoke scene.
also added into me wondering if he'd ever heard of david bowie
The thing that bugged me the most was how fast they talked. I was all prepared to love this movie and it just fell flat for me
i enjoyed this movie a lot and it made me cry so much, i think i might’ve enjoyed it more than some others because i haven’t read the book yet and had nothing to compare it to
Thank you for pointing out these changes - they bothered me so much!
Please that is such a queendom level of serve
2. How dare you stop at the condom discussion, especially when his mom mentioned about Truvada, bottoming, even HPV risk.... That's such a "I'm not your regular Mom, I'm a cool Mom" energy, I was rolling in my bed laughing like maniac
Amanda's enthusiasm is always appreciated, fun video.
At 17:38 when Amanda said “looming issues” I heard “LUBING issues”🤣😂🤣hilarious in the context
Something I don't get why they changed is that they said Henry's dad died a few months before meeting Alex instead of 14 months
IT SHOULVE BEEN A 6 EPISODE SERIES
THATS WHAT IM SAYINGGG
I know we got one Alex speech in the movie. But for some reason while reading the book, the last speech during election day.... gave me goosebumps and when they won I had tears in my eyes..... I feel that scene made Alex's passion shine a lot. So I was pretty bummed to not have that in the movie..... and not having Henry's mom stand up to monarchy for him.... pretty big steal..... seriously!! Wish they would release uncut version
