McSweeney never looked close to being Test class, if Konstas fails Australia is doomed with Khawaja 38 and averaging a miserable 24 from 16 innings this year, I cant think of any opening batsman that old that could recapture their previous form, maybe Jack Hobbs but thats going back 100 years. Sheffield Shield is a wasteland now, nobody wants to play 4 day matches where they need to bat for a few hours, they want to play t20 where they will need to bat for only a few hours per season.
I honestly would’ve dropped khawaja and let the two youngsters try to figure opening out. I feel like there’s something to be said for the intimidation factor for mcsweeney coming into an old, established team in a series Australia is desperate to win- must come with massive pressure. But if Konstas and mcsweeney opened together it’d give them a changing room friend to relate with
@ Team chemistry matters and being the only newbie in a veteran team with a ton of expectation on their shoulders is intimidating and you just can’t expect a rookie to come in and perform in those conditions, especially playing out of position. Mcsweeney would have performed better had he had another new player in the team he could buddy up with and share that pressure. You see it with how marnus absorbed a ton of criticism in the first couple of tests when really smith and khawaja should’ve been under just as much fire. If there were 2 young openers out there, there’s less of a feeling of the weight of the world being on one of their shoulders. I’m not saying they should’ve put a youngster in the team cause of his feelings, but because I think he would have performed better. I think it would’ve halved the pressure on him. Khawajas scores are very comparable to mcsweeneys this series anyway. Not to mention getting youngsters in the team now will be better for the future and help build report for the next generation.
While I feel sorry for McSweeny, this is probably a good longer term move for Cricket Australia. Get the two most promising top order batsmen blooded in the test team before an injury to Khawaja or Labuschagne may require both to play. Ideally Konstas would have had a few more first class matches under his belt before this debut, but the lack of quality depth in Australia's top order batting atm requires his fast tracking.

I would drop Marsh for Webster, who has been in good form and will at least bowl and only bring Konstas in right now if Head doesn't prove to be available, moving McSweeney to the number five spot while he's out.
Coach and selectors should be dropped they are incompetent
drop labuschagne and bring mcsweeney to 3 and then have konstas open
I second that.
Bit harsh on Labuchagne since he's already scoring. McSweeney can stay its got to be Khawaja and Marsh for Konstas and Webster
@@capedcrusader4055 labuschagne has barely scored in the last year and mcsweeney’s regular position in the shield is 3 and 4. It’s hard to open for the first time against the best new ball bowler in the world

Can't drop Marsh cause he's such a "great bloke". Brotherly love in the dressing room is more important than form if you're a "great bloke". Oh, and he's such a practical joker ... what a funny guy and a "great bloke".
Not a red ball cricketer. Never fit enough to go the distance.
Short form cricket only.
McSweeney should smile more and crack jokes if he has to beat this "great bloke"-ism. Poor chap must've been worried about his batting.😂
What’s even worse is the cavalier attitude the selectors have to Scott Boland who always fronts up, always performs, yet gets kicked around like the station dog. His being dropped in Brisbane was appallingly insensitive
If we're assuming Hazlewood was a 100% when he was selected, then who were you dropping for Boland?
Hazelwood was not 100%, every side strain he has had over the past five years the quickest recovery was return to play after missing 3 full test matches. I.e. getting injured during or after Perth and not returning until Sydney Test. Evidence was there, the dropping of Mcsweeny shows how big a fall from.grace Cricket Australia is about to face, we'll be lucky to be even relevant against India and England in 5 years time
@@rainlbb
He played a key role in Adelaide win by negating the session under lights. Hard done..
I was hoping for McSweeny to succeed. For the good of classical test batting that is becoming rare.
What abt Marsh, Marnus and Khawaja?
"What about me, it isn't fair
I've had enough now I want my share
Can't you see? I wanna live
But you just take more than you give"
Aus selectors got this wrong, but they keep picking the dinosaurs until they are broken.
"Not scoring 10 in 5 out of 6 innings so far" is a bit harsh

Absolutely f#@king ridiculous. We’re cycling through youngsters & letting the WORSE performing late 30 year olds cruise through. 🤯 Hard to comprehend.
Wow McSweeney struggled against Bumrah (the highest wicket taker in the series so far with an extraordinary average), whose to say that Konstas will be able to do any better than him with 4 innings to go.
Only time will tell.😊
Whaat? Drop usman and bring in sam. Usmans only got a year left in him..bring in younger talents in place of ageing cricketers
Exactly, absolutely wrong to drop after just 3tests
Can't have two openers who've never played a test before though
Experience is important, but we might have a little too much of it at the moment
I think it's the experience
Hopefully Marsh is now keeping number 6 warm for Green. Having both of them in the team is a luxury Australia can't afford. A fair argument for Webster to replace him now given Marsh's current form.
@@bluecedar7914 Green is a number 4. Look at his average since he got put up the order
This is actually a good move. It's not like konstas is going to do any worse than mcsweeney currently, and they may as well try him out. Obviously Mcsweeney can come back after this series is done, but maybe konstas can adapt better. He also actually managed to score a hundred against the best indian bowlers except bumrah so he seems to be the most ready.

He scored freely in the match against India A in which Siraj, Akash Deep and Harshit Rana were playing.
It just goes to show how good was David Warner, opening batsman is a very underrated position, even Langer and Hayden were dropped after a couple of matches and took years to get settled.
But if Konstas and mcsweeney opened together it’d give them a changing room friend to relate with
This is Test cricket, not play date with your mate.
Disappointed they didn't pick Warner. He looked outstanding in the Big Bash the other night. Or so I'm told. I blinked and missed it. Would have given us a break from his 'commentary' though.
You have to have the right "mindset" to listen to Warner commentate apparently.
Aus ain't a sympathetic cricket board, They gave the best farewell for Davvy when He wanted, There was, is no point for going back from there, Within a couple of series, They may need for Brand opening pair as Khawaja is near to the end..

Just 3 tests given and dropped. The list of use and throw policy players is extending. Happened to at least a 11 in the past 7 years.

Most ridiculous thing ever by Aussie selectors. A player should play a full series. Imagine now konstas has a little difficult outing he'll be dropped or what ? . Bizarre
They show way too much loyalty to the older players (Khawaja needs to go, Warner should've gone a year earlier than he did), yet give their replacements a couple of games and then get rid of them
@Johndoe-n3x9o I think Adelaide test was won on the day 1 , when mcseeeney and marnus played 30 overs under the lights. Could have been 2-0 if that hadn't happened.

@rjSayz personally, I don't think he should've been selected in the first place. He's not an opener. But once you've made that call you need to stick with it and give him a proper opportunity (at least a full series) to show whether he's good enough
