    Enjoy this short clip from the day we insulated and tacked in Vapor Barrier in the Passive Solar Greenhouse! This greenhouse is the product of YEARS of testing, modeling, and experimentation and we're so excited to have it near completion! We're not too far off from planting cold season crops like kale, chard, and bok choi! Keep your eyes peeled for future videos ;)
    We love, and will continue, to share short clips on our TH-cam channel, but if you're looking for more of a deep dive on Passive Solar Greenhouse design and you want access to the FULL case study montage of this greenhouse when it's all complete, head on over to our website and pick up the Comprehensive Passive Solar Greenhouse course!

    Good stuff.
    Take this from an old scaffold builder.
    Climbing up and down a ladder gets old quick.
    To work on a wall that large get scaffolding for the whole wall.
    The insulation would be done in one trip up with somebody passing the pieces up from the ground.
    The plastic could be attached to the top and lowered.
    Based on how many people I saw working there. That wall would have been finished in one day.
    Something to consider for other people thinking of doing this.

    Wow that is going to be such a beautiful oasis!! What is the cost to build something like this?

    I've been following your build with great interest. We are in finishing stages of completing a backyard passive solar greenhouse. We would like to know what you're choosing as interior wall material? (covering the insulation). We are debating what material is best to handle the humid environment. thanks!

    Insulation with straw bale maybe it would be cheaper.

    question: why is the north wall so high? Are you planning to have trees that need the height?

      Ah, I see you don't answer questions. Unsubbed.

    Is there an insulation that is natural rather than fiberglass?

    • @MhUser

      sheep wool, perlite, pumice, vermiculte, keramzite, straw; any kind of fiber bats are glued together with toxic resins

    Is your stud spacing to code? I would have built the rear wall 16 inch on center & then hung my rafters from the top using hurricane straps to affix the rafters to the wall.

    What's the size of your greenhouse?

  • @Cspacecat
    @Cspacecat ปีที่แล้ว

    No polly!!! Use 2" Celotex on all those walls and aluminum tape to seal. The difference will be astounding. If you do a half-ass job, you get a half-ass result. Where is your solar mass?

    Maybe we will build ours with ICE panels then we could do a comparison... 🤔

    you really should have put thermal mass inside and insulation outside if this is supposed to be passive

    • @jessemeyer3628
      @jessemeyer3628 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They use a ghat system so..no need for thermal mass. The entire ground floor inside the greenhouse IS THE THERMAL MASS.

      What is the R value where the cost outweighs the effectiveness with all the glazing on the south wall? (Point of diminishing returns)

    • @cherrytreepermaculture756

      @@philandhannahslittlefarm1464 Very good point. I think the decision for how much insulation to use is up to each individual, because it's hard to assign a dollar value to the benefit of additional insulation. I remember seeing a chart in "The Year Round Solar Greenhouse" where they show a huge benefit going from 0 to R10, then steeply diminishing returns beyond that. However additional insulation may be worth it to you if you are really trying to push your growing zone and every little bit helps. Figuring out a way to cover the glazing at night would have a much bigger benefit, for example if you can go from R2 to R4 through a movable insulated blanket. There's a grower on TH-cam in Alberta who has a Chinese style greenhouse, which uses 2 separate rafter systems each covered in poly, and an insulated blanket in between the layers.

      @@cherrytreepermaculture756 yes I follow him as well. He has no insation on the north wall. I think the thermal blanket keeping the heat in would be more effective than spending too much insulating the north wall. R10 makes sense to me
