I've been getting into battletech again (well mechwarrior back then for me) with the new miniatures game and the battletech (PC) game. Great to see you covering this. :)

Thanks mate - I need to look more into the PC game as I now have a desktop that potentially could play it! Also I am interested in the actual tabletop game since doing this video though it looks like it could be quite expensive to get into - which ones are you getting into (any recommendations for a beginner?)

@@ByteSizeThoughts I picked up this to play with some friends, it's pretty easy to find at most local board game stores.
      store.catalystgamelabs.com/products/battletech-beginner-box
There is also a bigger 8 miniature set that is almost impossible to find.
Great to hear you'll be playing the mechwarrior 2 games, they're all classics. Do check out the Mech commander series too.
Ps Love the PC Powerplay classic issue in the background of your Pentium gaming PC. :D

MW2:Mercenaries was one of the best games ever made in terms of world building.
You could choose whichever missions you wanted, but there was a universe that progressed whether you were dicking around fighting pirates, being a gladiator or involved in state intrigue.

I just finished reading the Gray Death Legion trilogy, and I loved it. It's set in 3024 to 3028, so no Clans yet, but I think it can serve as a really good intro to the Battletech universe for someone. However, you might want to read the Warrior trilogy next since that is written by Michael Stackpole, just as the Return of Kerensky series was. I'll probably read that one next.

Hey great shout, I recently finished Decision at Thunder Rift just before all the covid lockdowns started and enjoyed it a lot. Because I had a bit of a sense of how the universe was set up it was good to essentially go back in time before the clans. I need to get onto the next two and see how the characters progress so thanks for reminding me!

@@ByteSizeThoughts That's crazy, that's exactly when I read that one, too.

I agree. After the Gray Death saga the Warrior Trilogy is a must read.

Had the Blood of Kerensky series a while back but lost them in a move or 2 now I want to find them again. I think it would be a good intro into the Clans and the Clan Invasion.

Yeah these are pretty good. Maybe take a look around and see if you can get some epub versions. Im midway through the Grey's Death Legion Trilogy which predates the clans but is so far quite fun

Its funny not many people know battletech had the books, its been long while since i read them but as kid while everyone was into star trek and star wars i was into two sci-fi franchises. For tv i enjoyed babylon 5 more than star trek and when came to novels battletech got my attention. Battletech such underrated sci-fi franchise, people don't realize the universe more complex and advanced than they think. Sad when bookstore stopped selling the battletech/mechwarrior books i used to collect. they need to bring them back to the bookstores!

Absolutely, I wish I had known about the books earlier! Have you seen the ill fated cartoon - I watched a couple on youtube recently and they kinda are related. I'd love to give the table top game a go at some point too. Also loved Babylon 5 too as it seemed to have more battles and conflict in it (until Deep Space Nine had a full on war)

Thanks I saw one of these books and was curious.

Yeah I find them easy to read. Some are written better than others. But they are fairly decent and after a while you get pulled into the battletech universe. Worth looking around to see if you can find some. I now always look in charity shops for the ROC publishing symbol on the spine as a quick way of spotting these books

My brother got me the Game of Armored Combat box set for my birthday and I am loving explorong the world. The box set come witha novelett set in 2990 starong I believe the father of the first battletech book coming out. I believe catalyst games has over 100 ebook versions out on their website. A new clan invasion boxset is comong out next year. You can still preorder it for the kickstarter prices I believe.

Awesome stuff. I am hopefully getting some classic boxed PC games in the post later this week, it's an awesome universe, not sure why they never made a live action tv series (the cartoon is pretty ropey!)

I don't know if you are going to get this or even care at this point, but the next set of battle tech book you should read is the Twilight of the Clans.

    • @ByteSizeThoughts
      @ByteSizeThoughts  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Absolutely, I need to get back to these (currently reading the Under a Killing Moon novel). I was reading through the Grays Death Legion trilogy but stopped towards the end of book 2 for some reason. Looks like Twilight of the Clans is over 8 books - will have to give it a go - thanks for the suggestion!

    The universe is amazing.

Thank you Stuart for getting in touch. Another viewer helped me out finding the epubs earlier this year and I am enjoying the Grays Death Legion trilogy at the moment :D Good fun books to read during these hard times.

Honestly that’s 3 of the worst series of books. Twighlight of the clans series is much better. Also the fedcom civil war era and capellan solution books are much better.

It's been ages since I've picked up another book after I finished the Grey Death Legion trilogy. Will have to get back on it with these recommendations, I guess I liked these books as they fleshed out the game more for me and I didnt know about them back in the day :)
