    I think this game was made with the old gen in mind and then, they enhanced it for the actual generation of consoles. I was expecting much worse, but the overall performance on the old gen is decent despite the screen tearing, the low resolution textures and the lighting. It is not a huge leap. In some parts, I prefer the color scheme on the PS3 but of course the performance is better on PS4, hands down.

      It's an horror game. Horror games aren't meant to have amazing graphics they make the graphics and screen look a little older snd creepier. Graphics are still not that bad..

      it was made specifically for the last gen, they would have had to have started development at least 2 years before the next gen was even launched so PS4 & xbone were an after thought.

      The game was made for the ps3 in mind.. But they remastered it on ps4 so fast.. While ac Valhalla on ps5 is not remastered they only enhance the settings to high and ultra but the code base of the game is the same.. Evil within on ps4 they enhance the engine graphics.. While ps5 ac Valhalla they didn't enhanced the engine, they only enhance the graphics settings... Evil within on ps4 is a truly remastered version of the game.. While ac Valhalla on ps5 is not considerd as remastered coming from the ps4..... The gap between ps3 to ps4 is way to large..

    They had to make some serious cut on the ps3 version to make it ru on the system, but they made those cut in a so clever way that it somehow gave the ps3 version a more creepier atmosphere. Yes it look a little rough with some of the textures, but it looks good enough to not bother me buying this game on the ps3 before I get a ps4. Also, it is really nice to see some big budget titles like this one running so well on 7 and 8 years old hardwares so well.

    It looks like the devs were smart and actually designed the PS3 versions differently, rather than just running the same game at a low resolution with decreased detail. Some of the textures and models are even completely different. I actually prefer the color palette in the PS3 version because it looks grittier and has less of a yellow tint.

    This game is such a weird anomaly, where the last gen version actually has a number of spots that outshine the next gen versions. Character models, while not as high res sport little additional details like more gore on the Sadist's shirt; water is more realistic; and I see lots of different assets and textures used, they're not just downscaled. Just look at shadows, even the lighting between versions differs.
    And I, for one, enjoy the absence of all the bloom effects and the yellowish green filter from the 360/PS3 version. I didn't think they served to make the Next Gen versions look any better or more impressive

  • @xxLiquidxxSnakExx

    After a week of thought, I bought the game for PS4 and gotta say, this comparison is pretty accurate. What bothers me about the PS4 release is that the graphics are way too f*cking bright - and no, this has nothing to do with contrast but with how the lighting is being handled in this iteration of the game. The guys at Tango Gameworks went totally overboard with effects like blooming and specular highlights, damaging the overall atmosphere. Also, some of the PS4's effects look ridiculous, like the wetness of Sebastian's coat reflecting light like it's not actual wetness, but ice. It seems to me the devs wanted to show off what they can do with id Tech 5, even though some of the graphical effects make no sense in the context of the game. Just because those effects are a default part of the engine does not mean you absolutely have to include them. The PS3 version is a bleaker, grittier experience despite its technical issues (like an even worse frame rate than the PS4 at times).
    Oh, and for the outraged fanboys: I'm not "defending" last gen here, I'm making a point. The PS4 version is fine and beats the sh*t out of PS3 in terms of sharpness, resolution and performance, but I just can't get behind the overuse of lighting effects, they just eat away at the atmosphere - which is why I'm gonna rebuy the game on PS3.

    I own both a ps3 and ps4, and i'm actually considering getting this on ps3. It reminds me more of the classical horror games i loved like silent hill or resident evil. The atmosphere is just differend, like darker, deeper, creepier, misty. In contrary to the ps4 version, where the edges appear too sharp and its overall brighter and its got a sort of more polished look to it. And also the characters look like dolls on the ps4, other than the ps3, where they look more alive.
    Oh yeah the 30fps make sense to me, though the horror genre is the only genre to justify 30fps nowadays.

    I played this years ago on PC when it came out but looking at this makes me want to dig out my PS3. Yes, overall it's lower quality but all the lower quality assets fit together nicely with the lighting and color palette and makes for a really great atmosphere. Although the differences in color could just be due to different capturing hardware/software. But looking at this really feels like this game was pirmarily made for PS3/360 and then just updated some of the textures and lighting effects for the next-gen versions, but kind of lost some of it's inital art direction in the process.

      It's like getting a Stanly Kubrick film giving it the HD treatment changing artifacts and the lighting ruins the original concept and vision the original creators intended.

    After watching this video I've decided to buy this game for my PS3 because it's obvious that The Evil Within wasn't meant to be a next-gen game.
    They delayed the PS3/Xbox360 releases just because they wanted some time to prepare the game for the new consoles, otherwise they would be forced to call the game for the PS4/Xbone "The Evil Within Remastered" and this would have a negative impact to both Sony and Microsoft.

    Having completed the game I can't agree that the PS3 version is more atmospheric because it's darker. TEW isn't the kind of game that is better dark/gritty, it's the kind of game where contrast between darks/lights matter more. Toggling your latern to manage visibility/being seen is a big part of the game, along with the visual contrast between the two lighting settings. Where the lighting is stronger in the PS4 version are also the points in the game where darkness by contrast doesn't matter (canned chase sequences for example).
    Keep in mind that the PS4 version has better colour gradient/shadow detail as well. Now THAT is a big part of the game.

    Actually the game was made with PS4 in mind first, not the other way around. And because they made a decision to release the game on the old consoles, they went into serious trouble with performance issues and final polish. They had to redo the whole assets, lightning and mood on the PS3 which required double the amount of work. PS4/X1/PC has tessellation, screen space reflections, superior geometry and textures, bigger draw distance, SSAO, SMAA, Shadows and better performance. It was done on a heavily modified ID Tech 5 that supported dynamic lightning. If they didn't focus on the last gen consoles, the final work wouldn't be so sloppy and hasty. The game had some serious problem at launch which was fixed with a day 1 patch, and later on with a patch that removed the framerate cap and black bars. But because of this, the game was received poorly, even tho the game is one of the finest survival horror games. And while the plot might be a bit confusing, the game wouldn't work without it, you couldn't produce such nightmarish hellscapes and creatures because of some "experiments" or "viruses". It was like a blend of RE4, Silent Hill and REmake 1 (Burning Matches) without any heavy puzzle solving. The game also had a really solid cast of voice actors which sadly didn't return to TEW2. The only thing that looks a bit better in the PS3 version is the water effect and the fake lightning from the chainsaw run shaft, and maybe the blood on the floor when you wake up, but that's up to debate. The PS4 has a stronger colour and contrast, making it far darker than the PS3 counterpart.
    They should have really ditched the last gen consoles (sorry), the game would perform much better and be received a lot better if they did that. This was like making two games at once, and neither turned out to be perfect until they patched it (Unpatched PS4 runs at 20 frames and even lower). At least i played it on PC which had all the benefits from the current gen consoles. I know this is an old video, but i wanted to share some light into it.

      Considering PS4 dev kits shipped out in late 2012, the game started development in 2010 and it released in 2014, I have to imagine the game was made with the PS3 gen in mind first.

    Very helpful video! Remember director Shinji Mikami was pissed when RE4 was ported to PS2 and "watered down" from Gamecube. PS2 was still great fun and that's how I played it but now that I have bought the PS3 version of Evil Within (because I couldn't wait to play it) I now feel I have to trade it in. The game was meant to be played on next gen. No doubt story and gameplay are most important but the way Shinji Mikami intended gamers to experience the journey and his directorial vision is on next gen with better lighting, textures, shadow detail, movement, etc. He may not have even wanted the game to be ported to PS3 and 360 but it probably wasn't his choice. I'm just going to be patient and wait to buy the PS4 in the next year then play the game. No more ports.

    I've just bought the PS3 version (and yes I also have a ps4) and I must say the graphics are great, the screen tearing is minimal and affects the cut scenes more than the actual game. The fact that I got it from eBay for only £6.00 is even better.

      +benbmw1980 I also bought it on PS3 for like $20 as I couldn't find it cheaper elsewhere. But seriously TH-cam videos really hide so many details that you won't notice until you play the game for yourself. There are just SO many extremely blurry textures that look like its being rendered at less that 144p that it gives me the impression that I'm playing a PS Vita game. Great atmosphere as a whole but the engine is trash...The PS4 version looks like what the PS3 version is supposed to look like.

  • @Traina
    @Traina 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For me the ps4 is better when it comes to the character models and the frame rate. However, I still think the ps3 version looks better but the screen tearing is annoying. They're like different videogames in a sense, just like Tomb Raider Underworld for ps2 was to the ps3\xbox 360 version. The ps2 version of Underworld was awful, it is hard to believe it was made after TR Anniversary. At least The Evil Within has some good enviroment differences between both versions. I like the blood and objects, and the lightning in the ps3 version, like I said, I just hate the models and the screen tearing, totally remind me of "The Killer is Dead" frame rate.

    As long as games continue to come out for the PS3 I can not see upgrading anytime soon.
    Personally as a grown man with a job and a family my gaming time is limited, so the PS3 satisfies what ever gaming time I can scrounge together. Right now I am playing RAGE again and I am loving it. That game looked so good I am still impressed with the character models in that game, sadly the wasteland was under whelming but no matter Fallout New Vegas is satisfying that itch, oh and lets not forget Skyrim.
    Never been a graphics nut so what the PS3 pushes out is more than enough for me, but one thing I truly look forward to when I finally do upgrade is the jump in frame rates, although we have seen so called next gen games suffer in that area as well, Assassins Unity is getting raked through the coals for being sold in the state that it is currently in, and that was designed specifically for the next gen Consoles.

    From what I've seen, there are only a few aspects where the PS4 version is better. His coat in the PS4 version is more detailed, and the door at 4:07-4:10 is more detailed in the PS4 version. However, if you look at the brick wall at 3:47, it's much more realistic looking in the PS3 version, and the protagonist has much better shadowing on his face and the coat in the PS3 version. Overall, I think they both look good, but I actually think the PS3 version wins because of its better shadowing effects. I saw the same thing in Watch Dogs. It seems that the PS4 makes the games too bright for some reason.

    • @brandypollard7195
      @brandypollard7195 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You nailed it man. They stone wall like a more realistic design on the ps3 but yeah, there are so many things that are different really. Almost like two different studios built them with different ideas on the environment and details.

    • @SynapFozzy435
      @SynapFozzy435 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it does seem that way. I feel that games look so much better with good shadowing effects, and it really needs to be emphasized in survival horror games. I remember in Watch Dogs, I was seeing way too much of Aiden's face compared to the excellent shadowing that was in the PS3 version. I think that these development teams just don't know the new hard ware that well yet, but with a couple more years into the PS4 lifespan, they will be able to manipulate the graphical details much better.

According to you me checking out how Evil Within runs on console and being thankful that I got it for PC due to 31% of the screen missing is being a troll?. If you haven't already guessed by now, they make these graphical differences purposely. Maybe purposely isn't the right word but they certainly put the most effort into the next gen version, thus paying less attention to the previous gen. We all know the PS3 and 360 hardware are more than capable of rendering maps, textures and overall graphics way better than this. See GTAV for example. Watch Dogs, Thief and this game have all done the same thing. Can't blame the developers though. At least they give people the opportunity to enjoy the games even on the older consoles (although they gain a lot more money as the new gen isn't that popular yet).

    • @darrellsmith9727
      @darrellsmith9727 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You totally nailed it. I thought it was just me thinking this. I get the impression that the graphics can look just as good on the ps3 but I get the impression they purposely dumb the graphics down.
      This new jump into next generation consoles seems inferior to past next generation console jumps. I remember when ps3 first came out and how much better it was to ps2. Not saying ps4 is bad. I do think it's great but the next generation jump just doesn't have the wow factor.

      The atmosphere is gone. This game was in development for the previous gen, on conversion the original vision is lost.
      It's like getting a Stanly Kubrick film giving it the HD treatment changing artifacts and the lighting ruins the original concept and vision the original creators intended.

    Almost no difference between the two versions. PlayStation 3 version still looks fantastic. The PlayStation 4 version is obviously higher resolution in some scenes, in others it's not so noticeable. A few scenes also contained environments that were slightly more detailed on the PlayStation 4 version, but again nothing major. I was on the fence about getting this game, but after seeing this video, it looks really good, and I'm going to go for the PlayStation 3 version. A slightly higher resolution and the odd scene with a marginally more detailed enviornment is just not a big enough incentive for me to choose the next-gen. version of the game.

    Let's get one thing straight. This isn't a fair comparison because it's 100% obvious that the video is doctored. Sure the textures and sharpness are better on the PS4, but it's no where near as bright and faded on the PS3 as this video would make you believe. You can tell it's doctored because of the varying levels of brightness on the PS3 side. It changes at 3:03 and then even brighter at 4:38.

The ps4 version also seems to have a bit more draw distance, while the ps3 version has more detail in the pool of water. I have the ps3 version.
