How refreshing to see a sewist so stylish, well groomed and coiffed😀 most sewists on TH-cam look like tired housewives, unfortunately. Thank you for caring. You’re inspiring
This is the absolute BEST video 📹 I've seen for hemming jeans. Ive watched countless videos on this and yours is the method I will now try. I tried another that failed and I broke my very first needle. I am so greatful you shared this with the world. I am 5'2" and have an inseam of about 28" so I always have to hem my 👖. I started sewing in hopes that one day I could hem and save $$$. Now I might be able to do that bc of YOU [and the very kind woman that gave me a wonderful machine. ] I am truly greatful for the sewing community and how much everyone is willing to share their love and education. What a treat!
I really appreciated you telling us what tension to set for the top stitch thread and the tool to deal with sewing over the thick seam. I also appreciated how much care you took with your appearance. I have been using Phaff sewing machines for 25 years and I love to work with their servers too.
I’m trying to figure out how to hem my jeans. My wife doesn’t really use a sewing machine, and my Mom left us her machine when she passed on recently 🙁. I just want to give you a hug for helping us make sense out of this. Thank you sweetheart !!!! May God bless you !!!!
I was so happy to read this beautiful message!🥰I’m so glad that I was able to help you... this is my ultimate intention! Thankyou so much for your hug!🤗 From our family to yours, a very Happy Christmas and joyous New Year!🎉
Have watched several of your videos now and they are all superb! You’ve saved my life with the overlocker one (I was about to throw it out the window!). Please keep making these - you are clear, concise and the camera work is excellent!
i have some of the thicker thread and had problems when I use it in the bobbin...I have been sewing for over 40 years...and you showed me the best thing I have learned, thank you!
Love it! It’s been a long time since I had to hem a pair of jeans. Husband bought a new pair of Levis that were too long. I forgot how to use my “Jean-a-ma-jig”. I might just have to re-do the hem. This video is so clear and well explained it will help me get it right next time. 🤗
Just brilliant. I even purchased the clearance plate before I finished watching the video. OMG all the jeans I could have done so much better. Thanks so much.
This is really the best tutorial to sew a jeans hem ever. Unlike those videos showing alter jeans keeping original hem videos out there. This video really showed the correct way I needed to learn. Thanks very much.
Thank you Margaret for the excellent video. I do alterations and have used the method you have shown here many times, I have also done the "Hollywood hem" which maintains the original hem which is more work. I have found that using the method you have shown here works great. I use a hammer to pound the thick seams into place BEFORE hemming as it helps to flatten the thick seam so it is easier to stitch over. I also use some fine sandpaper on the edge fold of the hem after is stitched to give it a "weathered worn distressed" look that some clients like. I have found this better than trying to maintain the original hem unless someone specifically asks for the original hem. Maintaining the original hem adds more bulk to the hem area causing it to often curl up and out after laundering.
I have been asked many times, 'why do I sew the hem twice when I could do it in one go?' The reason I do it this way, is to avoid putting the thicker thread through my bobbin. I would have to adjust my bobbin tension for this one purpose and then put it back to normal for regular sewing. This is not advisable and causes too much stress. Doing it with matching thread for the first pass allows you to do it from the inside and if you sew it crookedly, it can't be seen. When you turn it right side out, and use your topstitching thread, you can be more accurate because the hem has been stitched already and this row is for effect only. This step can omitted if you so desire, but the topstitching is done to give it a professional finish. Thank you for the comments. Happy Sewing! - Margaret.
I hemmed jeans before using your video and my jeans looked professionally hemmed when I got done. Just got another pair to hem and am so glad I found your video again. Thank you for your detailed instructions.
The tip on using a "Clearance Plate" was awesome! I went straight to eBay and bought one! I make Dog Collars, Tote bags & Pouches and I have the same problem all the time. I usually just go slow & advance by hand. This is going to make things much easier. Thank you so much!
I looked on ebay too, then realised it was such a basic shape I made two from thick cardboard (recycling an Amazon delivery box) encased in sellotape, to make smooth and longer lasting. Now looking forward to my next jean hemming, and seeing if they work... :)
Amazing... I have 3 pair of jeans my husband hasn't been able to wear since I bought them because I was too scared to take the hem up. What a surprise he's going to get! Also, that clearance plate is a great must-have accessory.
Amazing. I'm going to get a spacer it makes the job of sewing over bulky seems so much easier. I should have watched this before having just turned up jeans and broken 2 needles. Thank you a lesson well learned.
I've tried to purchase a spacer on the internet and cannot find one the same as you have used. Please can you advise where in the U.K. I can find these?
@@brunapugh1850 on ebay co uk, enter "sewing clearance plate", the cheapest from China is £3.06 it's grey but the same shape, a white one is £3.82. I made two from cardboard and sellotape...
Hi ....just watched your tutorial & thankyou that tool is brilliant. I have just ordered mine. I live in England your explanations are so precise to follow.
Brilliant!! Thank you so much !! This is the best Hem /Jean video I have ever seen. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. You are an excellent Teacher and have a kind voice.
Thank you very much for the clear explanation of hemming jeans. You are very easy follow so that you give me confidence to jump in and get started. You made a number of useful suggestions.
Just shortened two pair of jeans and put two rows of stitching on them they look professionaly done ,would normally just put one row but they loose the body in the hem thank you so much for the tutorial was a great help.
This is a great video. I want to start sewing my jeans and boxers. Im a female who wears male jeans and boxers which are not made for females but I’m going to start fixing the areas that need adjustment to fit best with my body. Thank you for the teaching!
Wow, I thought I knew how to hem jeans, having done many over the years, but this video has just changed forever how I do them! Never realised I could/should use thicker thread for the top stitching. I've always colour matched but used my usual weight thread, hemmed in one take and then noticed it didn't look quite right, now I know why. Next pair will get proper top stitching on 2nd time round, and as overlong denim shorts are next in line, it will show more, so am very happy to have found this video in time! Nor did I realise I should adjust tension for thicker thread, though logical now it's been pointed out. Only downside, I now have to trek to shop to get yet more cotton, same colour but thicker...Thanks for this very thorough video :)
Great video. Very well presented. I've got a sewing machine in the mail, and loads of jeans and shirts in the wardrobe that are too long for me, so I'm looking forward to getting stuck in.
Wife asked for a sewing machine. I got her one and she never used. Its mine now along with the serger/coverstitch machine I added to the collection. I do my own tailoring.
I like the idea of double sewing however I've never done that, im going to give it a try! Just an FYY for you and other folks out there, I do put the wrong side under the presser foot and position where I want the stiching to be near the turned up edge. I then place a piece of painters tape over my plate right next to what will be the bottom of the hem. I remove the jeans turning them rightside out. I then place the jeans back under the presser foot, wrong side down, and hem with jean thread. Dark thread in bobhin. I following the painter's tape guide i put down. Because it " longer" then the markings on my plate I find it easier to follow a strait line! Also I have found at the local fabric store "blue jean" thread. I dont recall what manufacture carried it. Just one more hint and I'll leave. If I dont have heavy jean thread or the right color, I have treaded two spools of regular thread to match the previous stitch color, sometimes mixing and matching. Works great! Have a gread day everyone
Thank you so much for this video!. My daughter in law just asked me to shorten some jeans for her, I've watched 9 videos on how to keep the original hem. What a waste of time. This looks soooo much better than any of them. First time viewer and subbie. Thanks again for sharing 🤗
Thank you, I used to hem jeans & never knew a Clearance Foot existed, must look out for one. Before I started to machine, I would give a few gentle taps with a light hammer on a wooden board to the heavy seem to soften the fold & like you Walk the needle for few stitches. I like the idea of stitching twice. Top stitching lovely.
I like that little gadget for the side hem , I`ll have to get one - I like the way you do your hems too been sewing for yrs . always just eyeballed it start set the hem pinch the other end and your hem is straight both sides .
I always stitch with the thicker thread on the bobbin and lighter thread on the needle.. Been sewing like this for year for customers.. Always worked for me...
Clearance Plate . . . .Well now I know what that little piece of plastic is for . . . and, more importantly, why I should have been using it all these years. (n.b. 2 uses i.e. needle insertion AND sewing across thick seams!!) Awesome video.
I just bought a new machine last night and it came with one. I had no clue what it was till I saw this video! The instruction manual doesn't mention it!
I never knew what the clearance plate was or what it was for, either!! Thanks for sharing! Sad that I don’t have one for my current machine. But I saw on a different video that you can also use a nail file, or a bunched-up and sewn piece of fabric. Great tip!
I want to add that I love that you cut off the original hem. Although this is scary, it is very helpful when hemming a lot off of a wide leg jean or boot cut as you then dont need to adjust for the change in the size difference which is a pain. This is so much simpler.
very nice and i loved to watch your video also because of the redness spread all around you your dress, nail paint, bracelet, ring stone, cloth pins and even youe machine foot had red dots..👌👌👌
I love your tutorial. Wonderful. I see a few complaints down below about losing the original look of the ripple affect that many or most jeans tend to have. I love your tutorial. Wonderful. I see a few complaints down below about losing the original look of the ripple affect that many or most jeans tend to have. I'm wondering if after a few times through the The laundry if it would start to look like the original factory hem? Has anyone tried this? Also does the factory hem look different because they actually created it with a different technique? And one more question of you will. I've seen below something about taking a hammer to the new hem to create the wrinkled affect. How does that work? I would think by smashing at the hem it would only flatten more not increase the wrinkles effect. Could you explain this? Again, thank you so very much for your wonderful tutorial. Very well done. And happy sewing to you.
Excellent demonstration, thank you!
