I too am an American ex-pat living in Ljubljana (it's been over a decade now; I'm half-Slovenian through my dad). I'm enjoying your videos; brings me right back to what it was like when I first moved here (yes, way less sugar in sweets, haha). And glad you appreciate Stolnica/the cathedral; it's one of the most beautiful places in the city. Anyway, enjoy; I may be biased, but you chose one of the best places to move to! 😊
Thank you so much! Oh wow, so you know exactly what I'm going through lol. I think it might be the best place as well. I have absolutely loved Slovenia! I visited Kranskja Gora this weekend, and it was beautiful! Cheers!
I'd recommend one day going to Gostilna Orle (restaurant Orle). It's on a hilltop near Rudnik, which is roughly 10-15 minute bus ride (bus nr. 3) from the city center. You can either take a car to the top or hike. They have many traditional slovene foods and the absolutely best babyback ribs you will ever have. Plus other kinds of meat dishes or even (in my opinion) best pizza in the city. If you reply, I'd be happy to drive us up to the restaurant orle or guide us up the hike. The restaurant also has a tower at the peak of the hill, so you get a wonderful 360 degree view of all of the surroundings.
hi. 🙂 I love your videos. As a Slovenian it’s really interesting to see everything from another point of view. I have to admit though, the meat stuklji confused me a lot. I have never heard of them 😂😂 i even asked my mum and she said that thats Slovienia’s way of competing with burek 😂😂 glad to have learnt something new today Also, here are some info about “cheese” or “cottage cheese” struklji. Keep in mind that many things, especially food differs from region to region. What i’m writing is is true for Gorenjska region, i dont know about others. There are usually 2 types of cheese struklji: a sweet and salty option. The salty option is used as a side dish and is usually served with meat (usually beef). In some families (usually the ones that were poor at some point) you would eat the salty ones with sugar on top or you’d make a sauce with crumbs and sugar and pour that on. That was like a desert. And also be careful with ordering this type of struklji if you dont like raisins. Many restaurant (and stores if you buy the frozen ones) put raisins in them.
lol It seems like the meat Štruklji is new to everyone in Slovenia. It was great. You should definitely try it! I need to try the cheese one, because I have heard that it is the most popular flavor. Thank you so much for the amazing advice and kind words! Cheers!
Hello I am glad that you like Slovenia and I hope that you feel well here I love watching your videos and of course continue to enjoy our beautiful country Nataša
If you ever go to the east of the country like Tolmin, Kobarid, Trenta try krafi, it's a traditional dessert in that region. Kind of similar to štruklji but filled with walnuts or pear.
As a Slovenian I love to watch your videos with my husband as we both feel that you present our country so well. Keep it up 😊 Also when I travel the world I make it a rule to try any local ice tea they have in that particular country and Sola is by far the best ice tea out there! Also, you should try the strawberry Frutabela cuz it’s the bomb 😁
Thank you so much for your support! I am so glad you are enjoying my videos! I think you’ll like the one coming out this week as I do a Day in the Life video!! I totally agree Sola is so good! I will definitely be giving the strawberry a taste. Sounds great to me! Cheers!
Loving your videos. The sausage restaurant was great. So enjoyed it when I visited last December. In fact , loved Slovenia, so much that I'm returning this December, with my family to see the beautiful country. Regards from South Africa
Welcome to Slovenia and Ljubljana. One thing to look forward to in December is, every church puts up a Nativity Scene. Frančiškani (the pink church on Prešernov trg) are famous for their kids friendly Nativity Scene, the one in Stolnica (St. Nicholas Cathedral) is more sombre and artistic, but every other church puts their own display on. Then there's famous live Nativity Scene in Postojnska jama, and many more all around Slovenia. The one in Brezje, which is a pilgrimage place to Mother of God, is pretty neat, too. So you can be pretty busy in December if you decide to see some of them. Enjoy your stay, hope school is good to you. 🙂
Wonderful! Thank you for all of the wonderful insight. Christmas is such a wonderful time in the church, and I am looking forward to the Christmas season! I will definitely be visiting some of the Nativity Scenes! Uni has been great! Cheers Tanja!
Hi.. I'm in Phoenix, Arizona, planning to travel to slovenia. I'm a nature lover. When in the best time to travel? Off season, bearable weather, high 50s or 60s, is fine and less touristy. Please recommend and always mention the month in your videos.
Gibanica is the best. Dude, visit the Šaleška valley (Velenje, Šoštanj). We have beautiful castles, old town, lakes, museums (Castle, coal mining museum, leather museum,... old churches, gallery and more. best regards
Bro, there is a rivalry between beers here. The two are Union and Laško. I have had more Union, and I think it’s slightly better. However, I have only had Laško once, so I could be a biased pick.
Ironically, everybody loves Prekmurska Gibanica, only actual people of Prekmurje rarely ever eat it, I've never seen anyone :D (I'm from Ljubljana but lived in Prekmurje the last 17 years)... I can also recommend 'Dödöli' which is a potato main or side dish and you definetly have to try Bograč, kind of a goulash with potatoes, both of which are also Prekmurje dishes...
I don't know what your sources are, but štruklji (those are allways steamed/cooked in boiling water) traditionally are walnut or cottage cheese, latter can be in salty or sweet variety. Our national dish called potica on the other hand do have tarragon, walnut, rasines etc
Oh interesting. I honestly don’t remember where I read the information lol. I tried to do a lot of reading before I tried it lol. I will definitely try the others flavors. I’m sure they are all great as this one was good. Cheers for tuning in!
