Regarding the three chest types in KH1, my theory has always been that Green Chests represent personal belongings, meant to be stashed away in small areas. As in. these items belong(ed) to specific people, who stored them away in either secretive hiding places, or places with sentimental value. The blue chests come from the worlds themselves as a way to assist Sora on his journey, or as a way to reward him. The red chests are spawned by Heartless, and contain items that they either stole, or had on them when their hearts were taken. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

Okay, watched the video, and two real points to make. 1: YOU CAN OPEN THE ATLANTICA CHEST OUTSIDE ARIEL'S GROTTO? One thing I love that KH1 does is not tell you how many chests there are, because it leaves the player free to actually explore, and situations like this, were I have never known you can open that chest. Maybe a middle ground where the journal doesn't say how many chests there are, *until* you have them all, then you get the Mickey? 2: Gonna argue San Fransokyo...kind of. I get why people find it frustrating, but for me, I loved digging through the nooks and crannies of SF's back-alleys to find chests. It made the area feel more...real to me, in a way KH hadn't much until 3. And my favourite chest in that area is hidden in one of those alleys. It made me feel so proud when I found it unaided. But that might be because I love BH6. The film is a comfort movie for me, and I actually love Hiro (in the movie. In the game, he's...fine.). Hell, I still have a soft spot for the series, as watered-down as it is compared to the brilliance that is the movie.

It probably should only be a very small percent of treasure chests in the game, maybe even just one, but having super well hidden treasure that gives a reason for the player to explore every possible space and try every interaction puts the "hunt" back in "treasure hunt". I love the Shiva Belt chest in Olympus Colosseum because it seems like the Blizzara spell is the one that would give the one and only hidden chest, but there's actually two! Finding a secret that the game tells you is fun, but finding a secret that the game DOESN'T tell you is even better!

I am commenting again as I’ve now had time to pay attention to the video. I love this video genuinely. I know when you make obscure vids like this, you always say something along the lines of "I dunno if anyone cares :/" but like, your kingdom hearts videos mean the most to me. Kingdom hearts is a franchise I started VERY late (I started either 2019 or 2020) compared to others but it's become such an integral and loved part of my life and I always love getting to learn more about it. And like, sure, retrospectives on games and characters are nice and all, but like a lot of that is just like "yeah this is how I’ve always felt and now someone is putting it into words." Your videos, however, always introduce me to new parts of the franchise I never knew of. Learning about all these cool chests, finding out there's manga, books, and board games tied to the universe, and of course getting to hear your opinions on funny stuff like which quote is the dumbest always helps me find newfound appreciation for kingdom hearts as a whole and literally every time I watch one of your videos, it makes me want to play more of kingdom hearts and, more importantly, it makes me want to explore what the franchise has to offer more! That was a hell of a ramble sorry lol. Anyways Tl;Dr: this video was great just like all of yours and I hope you keep up the good work and I hope your holidays went swimmingly!

I actually really appreciated this video, niche as it is. Much like your previous discussions on level design in these games, the chest topic does a lot to highlight how different games in this series emphasize exploration. The numbered games also have other ways they encourage exploration (trinity marks for 1, puzzle pieces for 2 and hidden Mickeys for 3) and I think those are likewise very illustrative of how these games tackle this. Thank you for a fantastic year of KH videos! Really excited for what you'll come up with next year. P.S. I don't know if this counts as short, but your appreciation for 0.2 has come up more than once on this channel and I think a dedicated video on that game would be fun, especially since I feel it tends to be a bit of a forgotten middle child in the series. At the very least you wouldn't have a lot of game to cover.

I don’t know about most viewers, but I LOVE seeing creators make stuff about super niche and silly stuff. Most of the time it’s weirdly passionate despite seeming easy at first. It’s like when you randomly ask a friend to rant about which character from Arthur is the worst and you see them get heated in a way you over see them do over the guy that killed their cat. Genuinely, these types of videos make me crack up, and I love seeing all the work you do to verify the information, like the items in each color of chest in KH1. Keep it up Pat!

That chest analysis after going over KH1 was really interesting! For someone equally as in love with the game, that was really awesome! Never thought about the designs before that way.
I clicked on this with so much excitement. You made the video about all the treasures and items in KH. So who better to spend an hour talking about his favorite treasures? Also the thumbnail is glorious.
With the games releasing on Steam this year, I played through the entire series for the first time. And so when we got to DDD, 0.2, and KH3, it put a smile on my face. “I’ve played those games now.” This was a great little tour through the whole series, and a great way to cap off the year that I finally got to do my own journey through all of the games.
The chests in KH1 don't have any real difference between them, but they ARE Sora, Donald, and Goofy colored, with Sora Chests being most common, and a lot of green chests are in 'safe' areas, with Goofy being the party tank, keeping you safe.

NGL, the chests in the throne room in the Mulan world was the most time I spent exploring any chest in KH2. The red & gold colour scheme did make it hard to find properly in a room where red and gold are the dominant colors. Thank god for Final Mix and Cavern of Remembrance for adding some proper platforming challenges.
Yo, pat, I NEED to let you know something I was forced to learn when doing KH1 rando - in Rising Falls, as you know if you go into the bubbles you can get a chest or whatever. Well, there's a SECOND chest in rising falls in the upper area that requires you to go into a bubble that _only appears on the second visit._ Blew my mind. At this point, in my mind, that chest is more obscure than the dark matter one. oh, and yes, KH1 rando is a thing. The "main" way to do it is by installing speedrunning tools, but I actually think the easiest way (by comparison) to do a KH1 randomizer is a website and ongoing project called Archipelago, which aims to allow different games to multiworld together. So you could even do a KH1+KH2 rando if you really wanted to. Be cursed with this knowledge.
Don't know what it is, but this was a really solid vid. Like, when you decide not to skip a filler episode and end up finding a personal favorite. Pound for pound, KH3 probably has the best chests imo. Only problem is that it's so solid I wish there was more of it. Like, you see how fully realized the Caribbean is or the cool optional stuff in Olympus like the action figure finding sidequest or the forge area in general and you think 'man, if only the whole game was like this!' Then again, there's only so much time we have on this earth and KH3 was already under a long dev time. Good second place is KH1 which always felt the most 'classic rpg' styled in its placements if that makes sense? Especially what you do in Wonderland which reminds me of the water temple or stone temple from Legend of Zelda. (compliment)
I think that Tornado Strike is the best chest in Enchanted Dominion. You have to use Sliding Dash to get it on your first visit, and come on, it's Tornado Strike, what do you want from me

Dang. I was hoping Pat would talk about the weird Hades branded vase in Olympus Colosseum, on the right side of the opening area, tucked away. Nobody EVER brings that vase up, even though I'm pretty sure it spawns in halfway with no notice and has something good in it.
Btw, the Oogie's Manor chests that are suspended in the cages become accessible once you flip the switch to open the green door. There isn't any real indicator that flipping the switch does anything, but the cages end up shifting positions into areas that you can jump to.
The fact that Pat made an hour long video on the most mundane sounding list but made it so entertaining and funny the whole time is a unique skill. I enjoyed this video so much, I'm counting it as my new official diagnosis of autism

I'm really glad to hear an honest critque for KH2/KH2FM. I loved those games growing up, but I feel like there's far too much hate for KH3 and the other Osaka titles because the physics and battle styles aren't a 1 to 1 match to KH2. For KH2/KH2FM, the words are amazing, but I do agree that the world design is really lacking compared to other titles. Like I was so disappointed when I revisited the Cave of Wonders only to find it's just a flat surface without the Indiana Jones vibe KH1 had. It makes the growth abilities in KH2 almost worthless until Cavern of Remembrance showed up.
I know I'm a follower, my favorite KH game is KH2. But that's only because i just absolutely love the art, story, and combat in that game. But my first KH game was KH1 and I do have to say as much as I love KH2 it doesn't have the same moments that KH1 has of finding random puzzles in the world and being rewarded for coming back with something like gravity. I got so excited when I realized I could use gravity to lower platforms. And my favorite part of KH1 was definitely the return to neverland when you finally get glide, the feeling of flying freely during the captain hook fight and again at the clock tower and the lines that Sora says about how he's excited to tell Riku and Kairi that he flew and wondering if they'll believe him. It's just one of my favorite moments in any of the games.

It probably should only be a very small percent of treasure chests in the game, maybe even just one, but having super well hidden treasure that gives a reason for the player to explore every possible space and try every interaction puts the "hunt" back in "treasure hunt".

I am commenting again as I’ve now had time to pay attention to the video. I love this video genuinely. I know when you make obscure vids like this, you always say something along the lines of "I dunno if anyone cares :/" but like, your kingdom hearts videos mean the most to me. Kingdom hearts is a franchise I started VERY late (I started either 2019 or 2020) compared to others but it's become such an integral and loved part of my life and I always love getting to learn more about it. And like, sure, retrospectives on games and characters are nice and all, but like a lot of that is just like "yeah this is how I’ve always felt and now someone is putting it into words." Your videos, however, always introduce me to new parts of the franchise I never knew of. Learning about all these cool chests, finding out there's manga, books, and board games tied to the universe, and of course getting to hear your opinions on funny stuff like which quote is the dumbest always helps me find newfound appreciation for kingdom hearts as a whole and literally every time I watch one of your videos, it makes me want to play more of kingdom hearts and, more importantly, it makes me want to explore what the franchise has to offer more!

I actually really appreciated this video, niche as it is. Much like your previous discussions on level design in these games, the chest topic does a lot to highlight how different games in this series emphasize exploration. The numbered games also have other ways they encourage exploration (trinity marks for 1, puzzle pieces for 2 and hidden Mickeys for 3) and I think those are likewise very illustrative of how these games tackle this.
Thank you for a fantastic year of KH videos! Really excited for what you'll come up with next year.
P.S. I don't know if this counts as short, but your appreciation for 0.2 has come up more than once on this channel and I think a dedicated video on that game would be fun, especially since I feel it tends to be a bit of a forgotten middle child in the series. At the very least you wouldn't have a lot of game to cover.

I don’t know about most viewers, but I LOVE seeing creators make stuff about super niche and silly stuff. Most of the time it’s weirdly passionate despite seeming easy at first. It’s like when you randomly ask a friend to rant about which character from Arthur is the worst and you see them get heated in a way you over see them do over the guy that killed their cat. Genuinely, these types of videos make me crack up, and I love seeing all the work you do to verify the information, like the items in each color of chest in KH1. Keep it up Pat!

With the games releasing on Steam this year, I played through the entire series for the first time. And so when we got to DDD, 0.2, and KH3, it put a smile on my face. “I’ve played those games now.”
This was a great little tour through the whole series, and a great way to cap off the year that I finally got to do my own journey through all of the games.

The chests in KH1 don't have any real difference between them, but they ARE Sora, Donald, and Goofy colored, with Sora Chests being most common, and a lot of green chests are in 'safe' areas, with Goofy being the party tank, keeping you safe.
You don't really give off of vibe where I would expect you to drop an expletive so I love it when you do😂

NGL, the chests in the throne room in the Mulan world was the most time I spent exploring any chest in KH2. The red & gold colour scheme did make it hard to find properly in a room where red and gold are the dominant colors. Thank god for Final Mix and Cavern of Remembrance for adding some proper platforming challenges.

Yo, pat, I NEED to let you know something I was forced to learn when doing KH1 rando - in Rising Falls, as you know if you go into the bubbles you can get a chest or whatever. Well, there's a SECOND chest in rising falls in the upper area that requires you to go into a bubble that _only appears on the second visit._ Blew my mind. At this point, in my mind, that chest is more obscure than the dark matter one.
oh, and yes, KH1 rando is a thing. The "main" way to do it is by installing speedrunning tools, but I actually think the easiest way (by comparison) to do a KH1 randomizer is a website and ongoing project called Archipelago, which aims to allow different games to multiworld together. So you could even do a KH1+KH2 rando if you really wanted to. Be cursed with this knowledge.
Don't know what it is, but this was a really solid vid. Like, when you decide not to skip a filler episode and end up finding a personal favorite.
Pound for pound, KH3 probably has the best chests imo. Only problem is that it's so solid I wish there was more of it. Like, you see how fully realized the Caribbean is or the cool optional stuff in Olympus like the action figure finding sidequest or the forge area in general and you think 'man, if only the whole game was like this!' Then again, there's only so much time we have on this earth and KH3 was already under a long dev time.
Good second place is KH1 which always felt the most 'classic rpg' styled in its placements if that makes sense? Especially what you do in Wonderland which reminds me of the water temple or stone temple from Legend of Zelda. (compliment)

Dang. I was hoping Pat would talk about the weird Hades branded vase in Olympus Colosseum, on the right side of the opening area, tucked away. Nobody EVER brings that vase up, even though I'm pretty sure it spawns in halfway with no notice and has something good in it.
Btw, the Oogie's Manor chests that are suspended in the cages become accessible once you flip the switch to open the green door. There isn't any real indicator that flipping the switch does anything, but the cages end up shifting positions into areas that you can jump to.
The fact that Pat made an hour long video on the most mundane sounding list but made it so entertaining and funny the whole time is a unique skill. I enjoyed this video so much, I'm counting it as my new official diagnosis of autism

Pat, I hate to inform you of this, but... you NEED all thirteen Xehanort Reports to finish the game (or at least the final story of the game), so the best chest in Deep Space (edit: and the Keyblade Graveyard, yikes) is actually required for Ventus
I'm really glad to hear an honest critque for KH2/KH2FM. I loved those games growing up, but I feel like there's far too much hate for KH3 and the other Osaka titles because the physics and battle styles aren't a 1 to 1 match to KH2. For KH2/KH2FM, the words are amazing, but I do agree that the world design is really lacking compared to other titles. Like I was so disappointed when I revisited the Cave of Wonders only to find it's just a flat surface without the Indiana Jones vibe KH1 had. It makes the growth abilities in KH2 almost worthless until Cavern of Remembrance showed up.
I know I'm a follower, my favorite KH game is KH2. But that's only because i just absolutely love the art, story, and combat in that game. But my first KH game was KH1 and I do have to say as much as I love KH2 it doesn't have the same moments that KH1 has of finding random puzzles in the world and being rewarded for coming back with something like gravity. I got so excited when I realized I could use gravity to lower platforms. And my favorite part of KH1 was definitely the return to neverland when you finally get glide, the feeling of flying freely during the captain hook fight and again at the clock tower and the lines that Sora says about how he's excited to tell Riku and Kairi that he flew and wondering if they'll believe him. It's just one of my favorite moments in any of the games.
