Two months ago, I bought a used BMW X5 4.4i 2004 with 105,000 miles. As a car owner, I know the wisdom of preventive maintenance which your very well made videos provide for viewers. I applaud your offering. I have absolutely no knowledge about auto mechanics but after watching your videos I feel I am ready to take on any mechanic about things that need repairing--well, almost. Thanks
I am here for the excellent videos, but you have one of the most appeasing and honest voice i have heard which is such a great and rare thing these days.
Thanks for your input. We are always trying to get a good viewable shot, without too many re-frames. We'll keep an eye on the angles and the viewable details.
Most of us, here at BavAuto.com, keep our engine bays clean by periodically washing with the pressure washer at the DIY car washes (quarter car wash). If there is a lot of grime, we'll spray the areas with the water soluble degreasers that are available (GUNK engine cleaner, for example), prior to spraying.
If the label says ATF, then the proper fluid is Dexron-III automatic transmission fluid, such as the Red Line synthetic Dexron-III in our online store at bavauto.com - Part number D4ATF
Great video. Question: As I wait for my Bentley manual to arrive for my E46 330ci, when checking my engine oil level I've been getting different readings (albeit all within range) on the dipstick. Should I check the engine oil when the engine is cold or warm? And if warm, how long after engine shut down should I wait for the oil to drain down in the block? Thanks, Bill
I'm considering purchasing a used BMW (it would be my first BMW) and watched this video in anticipation of learning about things to check on when I look under the hood. All told this video did that. Dealer/seller might freak out when I start pulling clips to look at that micro filter and the subsequent air filter but that just works in my favor so I don't look like a complete novice. Thank you! One question if I may: Any major differences out there I should be aware of between a 330 xi 325? Both are similarly priced, similar mileage & appointments and overall condition, not sure if I should choose one over the other, but the salesman seemed either indifferent or lacking in specific knowledge about the branding differences and I fare no better in terms of knowledge.

Hi, Bav Autosport. With my Bimmer 320ci E46 I have 2000km (1200 miles) for 15 months. It is necessary to change the oil ?
Either you have a bunch of individual issues or a corruption in the CAN BUS system. One thought would be to change the ignition switch. This is a common system corruption point. We have the switches in stock at bavauto.com.
Hi is this maintenance work for E39 520i BMW model 1999 150 hp is it the same procedure with these 5 series your time will be appreciated . Regards from Nazareth city saleh
Having a problem with 525i as doors will not unlock or open except the driver's and only manually with the key, the wipers are constantly running and will not turn off, no alarm sound when key is pressed, full beam and traffic signals only stay for a few seconds and cut off. The car starts and drives and battery tested was said to be ok. Please help.
The underhood area, as well as other areas that are not exterior body panels, does not receive the metallic or clear coats. These areas just have the color base coat.
Thanks for the reply. The newer models do offer a much different maintenance schedule though. I understand you have limited resources to make these videos. My 2011 335d is a great vehicle, but I want to do my own work.
This video is intended to be a general overview of the inspection points and procedures. You can apply it to the direct points on the various BMW and MINI chassis. We do not have vehicle specific videos for these general procedures.
This is known as a stress-bar or strut-brace. It is used to tie-together and strengthen the upper strut tower sheet metal. Click the link below for our stress-bar listings: www.bavauto.com/se1.asp?dept_id=214
Please email us at info@bavauto.com or call our Advisors at 800-535-2002. There are many possible issues that could be at play with your note of the rear brakes not working on both sides. One thought is a seized caliper, but further discussion and detailed symptoms will need to be covered.
My experience, owned a few BMWs. Car becomes unreliable and a money dump after about 50-60k. "Maintenance" is unreasonably expensive and many parts go out constantly with ridiculous replacement costs. Also, almost seems like they're built to make it hard for you to work on them. Have been a pain in my ass really. No longer have any respect for the hyped german engineering. Buy American or Japanese cars and save yourself the headache!
+Larry Kameron : I agree with your assesment of BMW low reliability to a point. BMW requires constant maintenance but many owners neglected the maintenance due to the high cost of BMW parts and labor. The most reliable cars I've owned are Japanese. But the cost for Japanese parts is also high, not as much as BMW, compare to American cars.
the price of BMW parts depends on your region, here near Seattle we have a surplus of parting out bimmers with reasonable negotiable prices for parts. My 525i was comparable in maintainence cost and replacement parts for my 2003 ford mustang v6. And about the same amount of upkeep too especially after 100k miles

Spectacular videos, very precise. You guys aren't always the cheapest, but I definitely get better service/overall experience.

We're certainly glad we could help. Happy Spring driving!
Thank you for the video I'm going to pull my e46 out of the garage after a winter storage today and this video helped me out a TON!
I always love your videos which are really really helpful to maintain my cars. Thanks.

How did you get your engine bay so clean??
Thanks for the great video. They are a God send!
Great DIY Tutorials!
Such a pity you can't show some specials things about diesel engines (318 (t)d, 320 (t)d and 330d) from the US.
You likely have a blown head gasket, intake manifold gasket (on the small-block Chevy V8 only) or a cracked engine block or cylinder head.

What brand is the air filter with the pre-filter? When I install an air filter it never has the pre-filter mounted on it.

Is this what they inspect when your service light for vehicle check is on?
great video. Very well done. Only advice I could give is better camera angles would be nice but other then that great job
Excellent channel!
Yes, that's OK. Just don't mix the different kinds together and be sure to change it every two years and use distilled water.
Where it says atf only is it ok to put transmission oil or do I have to use steering wheel fluid?? Thanks
Great video however safety should always be first. The technician should remove his ring and watch anytime while working on a vehicle
Great video and channel
If only I could bring my car to these guys and let them fix everything and let them use it for videos to post.

How reliable is the M54B30 I6 in the E46 3 series?
Great video!
I have a question, I drive a 1998 BMW 540I and the coolant is not blue its the yellow kind is that okay?
is there an explanation why the paint under the hood is white'ish and the rest of the car silver? my '01 E46 325i has that too.

I was your 1000th like!
Replace the ripped boot. The vacuum leak, due to the ripped boot, will certainly contribute to or be the sole cause for the poor idling.
Thanks Guys!
very very very informative! thank you for the video :)
Sebastian Skopek repair headlines on a BMW 325 ci
I would love if you guys could give some love to the 2009+ 335d!!
Yes, we are working on planning what we should do for the new diesel models (new for the US, anyway).

What is that cross beam over the engine?

Good
the only negative thumb is from a bmw associate lol
E39!!
I don't understand the "Bentley" reference he makes
Bentley is a company that publishes service manuals for various cars.
