This tutorial will help you create your own pattern and basic dress for Barbie or another fashion doll of your choice. It is a fun project for new and experienced sewers.
Thank you so much for the video. I’m an adult Barbie doll collector, new and rescued and I’m a sewist, knitter and crocheted. My passion is making miniature although I do make my own clothes.
All I can see is that great vintage sewing machine. I'll bet it is easier to sew on than the new machines. I'm a real newbie Barbie sewist, although I've been making doll clothes all my life. I'm still grappling with such tiny seams and my curvy Barbie who fits into none of my patterns. Thank you for sharing. I'm looking forward to watching ALL of your other videos.
My older sewing machine is the best. I think it is because I learned on it and it feels like second nature. I have a newer one that has 130+ stitches, an automatic threader and a cutter. It's a bit intimidating. I hope you find some good tips in the videos. Thank you for watching.
thank you for this. I see where I went wrong when I tried doing this from memory or a site I cant remember. lol all your videos have been spot on and just what I needed to get back into sewing for my dolls. TY TY TY!!!
OMG!!! I am SO impressed with your tutorial.. My youngest granddaughter has a few Barbies but I don’t like the quality of the clothes created for the doll so I’ve been searching the web for quick& easy sewing tips. Yours is the best by far! All your tips- wrapping the doll in wrap before adding the masking tape, making small cuts on the curved areas before sewing and where did you get the cucumber shaped ironing form to press the dress? Incredible! Thanks a million-I can’t wait to start sewing!!!
Never heard of a slipper dress. I would call that a shift dress . Anyways I have to try this technique. I usually just alter the pattern. Sometimes they fit sometimes don’t. Anyways cute dress
Thank you so much for all the steps and details in this video! I sew exclusively for Barbie ( mostly vintage and original silkstone) I love all your patterns and wish they all came in Barbie size. Could you do a similar video where you create the bustline darts and or body darts? I struggle with those and creating the darts from the masking tape form. Thank you for all you do 💓
Same. I have many poor dolls still wrapped in masking tape because I just got stuck at what to do and where to mark lines. (no pun intended). I tried foil on a rainbow high doll yesterday and yep, she's still wearing it. There's a very big difference between reading how to do it (they seem to miss a few steps between the put tape on and cut it off parts) so SEEING how this is done was mind blowing for me. I also have BJDs who are very well endowed with big hips & tiny waists. The darts part I cant get my head around and thats why the poor dolls are still taped.
Great video! I like this method better than patterns made by using foil or as other viewers have said, placing the masking tape directly on the doll. Thanks Tamara and I wish you and your family all the best and the happiest for the holidays.❤
Very helpful video. I always was my fabric..mostly out of habit. Less chance of staining and I usually make doll clothes for children and I want everything washable. Stay well and safe. From Tennessee
Why do you only have 177 views on this video yet over 5K subs? They dont know what they just missed out on. This was so easy to follow. I love your calm teaching technique. Makes me think "slow down". We're all in a hurry to dress our dolls, right? Since this is very fitted, this could technically be used to make a dress form the size of your doll, right? 🤔 (rainbow high dress form is what I searched youtube for so I ended up here by happy accident but just subbed! ) Im very motivated to try this out RIGHT NOW.. but ohhhh I wanna binge watch more of your tutorials! Thank you!
@@DesignsbyJude I did my first fitting for a rainbow high doll last night. ALMOST perfect, first try, which surprised me since I've tried and failed this many times before on other dolls. Usually because I dont know or where to properly place darts and end up giving up. (This video tutorial skips the darts but its something myself and another commenter asks you to teach.) Because its so close to fitting the first time, Im motivated to press on. I already had her wrapped in foil, thanks to another video I'd watched before yours but I ended up trimming to the base of her neck to avoid more curvy seams. I've watched several of your videos now and Im kinda sad you dont own a rainbow high doll. I've only just discovered them myself. Thank you for your reply. ❤
This video was perfect! What stitch settings on your sewing machine do you use for doll sewing? Would you recommend using fray check on raw edges? Thank you!!!
Thanks, this is a really helpful tutorial! It works wonder! Can I ask you which software you use to draft the definitive patterns? I'd like mine to have a "professional" finish, but I don't know how...
Thank you so much. This is very helpful. What I am struggling with is the Velcro. The ones that is available in South Africa is completely on top of one another. I see that in many TH-camrs, one of the pierces is only stitching on one of the sides and in so doing the Velcro lies more on the doll and not completely under the other side. In this the garments looks bulky and messy at the back or where I add it. Up to that point, the garment looks good, but many times afterwards not at all. Thank you for helping me.
Quelle bonne idée. Je vous avoue j'adore vos vidéos. Je n'ai pas vos poupées mais cela me permet de connaître les tip. Et là je vais bien visionner pour apprendre thank you, thank you
Brilliant, thanks so much for this. I've been wanting a decent tutorial on how to make patterns for Barbie. I've seen the ones where it's just tape applied directly to the body but I was reluctant to do that because of the reasons you mentioned.
i havent looked at the rest of your videos i will in a sec but i am eager to make big dresses like puffy wedding dresses for the dolls im curious of how to get a pattern for that
If you are sewing for Barbie-size dolls, the main pattern companies like Simplicity have a lot of patterns with that type of design. I have several for larger dolls, 16"-22" on my website.
I want to Lear n how to make poseable wired trench coat , wired capes and such for 1/10 scale action figures. I just don’t know where to start. Found this video and it gave me some kind of idea on how to make a pattern.
Awesome video, thank you so much. What is the ironing sausage called? Or is it an ironing sausage? Did you make it or buy it? So inspired, so many years bumbling through making crap dolls clothes, no more!
What kind of pen have you used to pencil the lines? I tried this method a while ago but the pen did stay on the velcro but smeared all over the tape. Merry Christmas 🎄to you.

The tape thing is crazy. Im so glad i watched this as a beginner. That alone will make everything so much easier!

This is great! I love your videos and patterns. I hope you do more sloper videos. A sleeve or bodice with darts would be awesome.
Thank you for the suggestion.
I helped with a Kickstarter production of the Lammily doll and I loved making her doll clothes.

It takes a bit of practice to get the layer thickness just right, but it's worth it.
This is so helpful! Thank you so much! Can you also make a tutorial on how to make a basic pants pattern?
I will keep the pants video in mind. Thank you.
🎉 Love this. I was looking for someone to show me how to d ok the pattern. Never thought it would be like this. Thank you.

Great tutorial! Thank-you so much. ❤

Thank you, that cleared up several questions I had about this method of pattern making.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for sharing! I’d really love to see you do one where you give her a skirt or dress that’s not so fitted… like a mod dress!
I will keep the suggestion in mind. Thank you.
Very nice! Same concept for humans you just need a buddy to help you.

Your explanations are just perfect!

Very easy to understand ‼️Thanks

You could use this as a base for a dress form. You may want to take the tape up farther on the neck. I'm glad you found the channel. :)

Awesome, thank you for making this very helpful tutorial. I’ve tried a similar method in the past but using painters tape. This looks much better.
Glad it was helpful!
Have you made or tutorial on TB league dolls, they about 6 inch dolls. I love your channel
I am not familiar with the TB league dolls.
Did you cut not add a seam allowance to the arm and neckhole for the facing? Because when i drew mine, it overlapped
Same happened to me, I tried and tried but couldn’t get it to work out 😅
Wow this is the best tutorial
I had your office co-workers in mind when I was filming this one. :)
@@DesignsbyJude awww thank you, I need to do my post today
your videos are amazinggggg
Thank you so much.
waoh!the sewing machine is like my mum used before
It's a great sewing machine.
This video was perfect! What stitch settings on your sewing machine do you use for doll sewing? Would you recommend using fray check on raw edges? Thank you!!!
I usually sew on a stitch length of 2.5-3 depending on the fabric. I do recommend fray check for loosely woven fabric that fray easily.
Love this video! Never knew about the tape method!
😊
I'm glad it was helpful. It's a fun way to get a good fit with so many variations.

There is a very thin 1/4" velcro being sold on Etsy. My mom gifted me with some and it works very well for doll clothes.

@@DesignsbyJude ☺️ have u made a video about Ken? Like a clothes tutorial 😊
I would love to see you offer patterns that would fit the vintage/original size Barbie body.
Thank you for the suggestion. If I add a vintage Barbie to my collection I will offer patterns for her.

I love this idea but we don't really use facings any more
Once you have the original pieces, you can always fully line the sloper instead of creating the facings.

I use CorelDraw.

The sausage thing is called a sewing ham. It was a gift from my mom. I use it all the time.
What kind of pen have you used to pencil the lines? I tried this method a while ago but the pen did stay on the velcro but smeared all over the tape. Merry Christmas 🎄to you.
I have had success with a regular ballpoint pen on the masking tape. Felt tip pens tend to smudge unless they are a permanent marker.
@@DesignsbyJude Thank you for your answer, Tamara. I will try it again when I'm back home 🙂
Do you have Christmas style so you can make a Christmas dress for your dolls
I have a holiday pattern for the MTM Barbies called Holiday Spark. www.fletcherpatterncompany.com/holiday-spark-for-barbie-mtm-pdf-a4-print-size.html
Hi! Would this work for 18 inch American girl dolls ?
I have not tried it for that size doll, but believe it would work.
É muito fácil de fazer o moldes dos vestidos.eliane Natal RN Brasil.
Fico feliz que seja útil

The RTB and E;;pwyne dolls are released throught the Virtual Doll Convention, https:/www.virtualdollconvention.com Many of the others can only be found on the secondarly market like eBay or Mecari since the company is not in business
Do you have to allow for easements
You can add a 1/16 to 1/8 inch ease in addition to the 1/4" seam allowance. This should be plenty for smaller dolls.
If you s low down I would be happy to learn how to make Barbie doll clothes
This video was not my normal content. There are a few other similar videos on TH-cam that may be helpful.

Do one for Silkstone please an sew some

Where did you get the iron?
The iron was purchased from Amazon

No understitching ont he facings? There's plenty of room.
She says in video you can topstitch if prefer or leave as is
Yes, understitching the facing is an option.
Can this method be used on a real-size human? 😂
It would be a bit more complicated for sure. :)
You go to fast😢
