Cuban Resorts - the Real Story

  • Cuba’s fancy resorts are stunningly beautiful - filled with white sandy beaches, mojitos, and oceanfront views. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it’s not the real Cuba. Cuban citizens are not welcome to resorts like Varadero so the only locals you’ll see are staff - all carefully vetted by the Cuban government for loyalty to the system.
    So enjoy the Cuban resorts - but take a day or two to explore the other side of Cuba. You won’t regret it.

    We drove all over Cuba in 2002 and gave many Cubans rides, also stayed in Varadero for a few days. Almost without exception they strongly supported Cuba's independence and, with criticisms, the Cuban government. There were some gripes about the screening of tourist areas, "convertible peso" and privileged transport but also understanding that this was needed for the tourist industry. Went again, more briefly 2 years ago and found that all these restrictions were much more relaxed. Never found a single Cuban anywhere, anytime who thought that the embargo was justified or wanted US intervention!!

    I have no idea why there are so many negative comments. You go to Varadero to enjoy the beach, hotels & most of all the amazing Cuban people. I don't understand why you said there is not much to do in Varadero, there is tons of stuff to do. I've been to Varadero 14 times as a solo traveler & I go to night clubs, several different natural caves, nature parks, flea markets, walk down town Varadero & check out the many fantastic spots to buy a meal or just enjoy a espresso & a great cigar. I'm never bored there & as a matter of fact I actually get some of my enjoyment by meeting new people from all over the world who have never been to Varadero & I will show them around the town as well as suggest different things to do & see. I have made many Cuban friends & have been to their homes outside of Varadero. Yes outside the tourist area it's poor but the people seem genuinely happy with the little that they have. I do bring tons of gifts for the workers at the hotel & even took a huge bag of sports equipment like baseball bats, gloves & balls & had a taxi driver take me outside Varadero to several small towns where locals live & he brought me to the places where the kids & teens play baseball & I gave out all the baseball gear. They were so happy to have new stuff & I was getting all kinds of thanks & hugs from the locals. Made me feel great to be able to see their smiles.

    I just returned from one week of sun in Varadero Cuba, felt it was fake, could not feel or see really lifestyle like you would when one travels to Africa, India, etc. Thanks for your video, it somewhat helps.

    This video starts out seeming to be pro-Communist, anti-Cuban people, but stick with it to the end and the final words on this video are beautiful. Worth hearing. Thank you.

    I’m cuban and this is the sad story of cuba. Everything in this video is true and is even worse this is just a little summary of 1 aspect . Thanks so much for staying loyal to the truth I see so many videos of showing communist cuba as a paradise when in reality is a bloody dictatorship. Thanks for your solidarity and empathy for my island.

    When was this filmed?its quite outdated. much older than 2018 as posted. I highly doubt anything goes on in Cuba that the government doesn't approve. LOL (Like Private homes, shops , cafes that they highly tax)

    • @OurHumanPlanet
      @OurHumanPlanet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Private homes ("casa particulares") are in fact licensed by the government, as are small eateries. While the gov't imposes rules (and heavy taxes) on almost all private businesses, there is also a thriving black market in both goods and services.

    • @CubanLibertarian
      @CubanLibertarian 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's also arbitrary confiscation of said private property... you gotta bribe and know people.
