Okuma 8K Surf is a great reel, with a very competitive price. I`ve been using this model since 2019 and, due to an accident, I had to replace one of my Okuma 8K reels.
I took this opportunity to compare the ones bought in 2019 with the new one, bought today (November 2022).
Although the color of the old one has been change by the sun, there are some differences in terms of paint, the new one is a bit darker and seems like it is less "metallic".
The spool is also different, it doesn`t have the dark grey paint anymore and it look like the shallow ones.
They have the same weight and they feel exactly the same.

Okuma 8K Surf este o mulineta excelenta, cu un pret foarte bun. Folosesc acest model din 2019 si, in urma unui accident, am fost nevoit sa inlocuiesc una dintre mulinetele meie.
Cu aceasta ocazie am facut si un video comparativ cu cele doua, cea cumparata in 2019 si cea noua, cumparata in noiembrie 2022.
Desi cea veche este "arsa" de soare, exista diferente de ordin estetic, cea noua pare a avea o culoare mai inchisa, mai putin metalizata decat cea veche.
De asemenea, tamburul nu mai are partea colorata cu gri inchis, este identic cu tamburii shallow optionali pentru Okuma 8K Surf.
Greutatea si sensatia pe care ti-o ofera aceasta mulineta sunt la fel.
Nu ezita sa adaugi un comentariu daca ai nevoie de informatii suplimentare.

nice looking reel and probably the heaviest surf reel around. the weight of 1 okuma 8k = almost 2 daiwa basia 45QD. if it drops on your feet, its gonna hurt.
They are indeed on the heavy side, but I don't think Basia is the best reel to compare them with since Basia is totally out of 8K's league when we're talking prices.
Despite the weight, I think that Okuma 8K is one of the best reels in its price range.
Is this reel sealed at all? Thinking of getting this one or maybe the spinfisher long cast but tht is about 170 more. Not sure if it’s worth it or not to go with the Penn however the Penn is sealed well.

If you're asking about the seal that the Penn reel has around the edge of the body, this one doesn't have one.
My target fish mostly GT and Grouper...from shore.. Between 5 to 20kg.
What line and size do you recommend??

I don`t fish in saltwater so I cannot give you an experienced answer... Sorry.
Best bang per buck surf reel...carbon drags iirc..quick drag...360 rotor lock..worm shaft..superb line lay and effortless reeling...why get basia if you can get 5 or 7 of these amazing reels...been using it surfishing at the beach...very durable and tough...some fishing equipments are made to catch more money...ferrari vs skylines..😂😂
I just got one. Did you use mono backing? I'd like to get my hands on the extra shallow spool that they make for this, can't find anywhere.
Do they come on different sizes? Like 10000. 12000.14000 with extra spool? Thank you.

The beige on the old one I think it's from the sun, I remember them being grey when I purchased them
The grey on the newer one is less metallic than the older one and overall the shades of grey seems to be different.
Another difference is the spool, more accurate, the grey band that has the lettering on it.

I had a look again and it looks that it is not very metallic, as you said.
I managed to get my hands on a shallow spool (it is the one usually mounted on the reel) and now noticed that the band around the spool must be transparent on both because they have the aluminium colour, only the letters in the shallow spool are bigger than on the deeper spool.

I think the standard spool that comes with the reel is not the shallow spool, at least in my region. You can see in the video that both reels are equiped with regular spools. I bought 5 reels and all of them were equiped with "deep" spools. Here, the shallow spool can be bought separately.
@@wildgeek so it is the same here, it came with the deep spool, but then I bought 2 shallow spools (1 for mono line and1 for braid line). What what I have is the Okuma Flite Surf that comes with 3 spools one deep 8000, one shallow 3500 and one shallow 1500. Best regards
Between this and shimano aerlex 10000 xtb , which to choose?
I personally have not used Shimano Aerlex 10000 XTB, but since they are a bit different (weight and size), I suggest you to check them both before buying, maybe even try them on your rods, to check how they balance with the rod.
Could this reel will fit for spod ?
You probably could use it for spod, the spool has 2 clips and the reel has a powerful drag, but it will retrieve less line per crank than a spod reel, 8K retrieves 108cm/crank.
You should also consider its weight, which is on the higher side.

I bet that they are much more durable than Shimano XTE,at half the price,but it s true that the Okuma doesn t have a spare spool.
