Too late now, but still wanted to let you know... I think those locating pins are pull dowels. They can be removed with a slide hammer. I'm impressed with how ambitious you are and willing to tear into that machine! I've only watched the first 2 episodes, so I don't know yet how the project is going. I wish you luck!

So far I did make a pretty significant mistake with the spindle. Episode 15 or so and I be forced to have a go at installing turcite so will se how that goes but I’m learning and I’m having fun! Good to know for the locating pin! Didn’t know that was a thing! Thanks!

@@BlaiseBarrette 100 Percent to pull the tapered pins Fadal used a slide hammer. The hole was reamed using a Pretty long tapered reamer Fadal made an extension for the reamer custom. The holes were reamed during machine assembly after the tool changer was leveled, using a small machinist level place on top of the Turret. Tighten the bolts get the Large power drill ream the hole and hammer in the tapered pin. And the reason they used tapered pins was if it wasn't level when inspected you can pull the pins and re-ream the holes.

Also the Sheetmetal was for both cosmetic and time savings The early Fadals used a tremendous amounts of Bondo 1978-1987ish . The columns, Base Heads were coated and sanded smooth.... but was extremely time consuming and Sheetmetal was smooth from the beginning and quickly painted... done.

Thanks! That makes a lot of sense!
